HOUSTON – The return of Plaxico Burress will have to wait. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has work to do with his other receivers anyway when New York opens the pre-season against Houston on Monday night.

The Texans, meanwhile, are eager to see how well they’ve learned Wade Phillips’ new 3-4 defensive scheme. Houston’s defence can only improve after ranking last against the pass last season (267.5 yards per game), the main culprit in a 6-10 record.

Monday’s game would’ve been notable for the resurfacing of Burress, who signed with the Jets on July 31 after serving a 20-month prison sentence on a gun charge. But Burress won’t even make the trip to Texas after spraining his left ankle in practice last week.

The other stars on both teams aren’t expected to see much action, either.

Jets Pro Bowl centre Nick Mangold will not travel, either, after hurting his neck Thursday, and Arian Foster, the NFL’s leading rusher in 2010, is also not expected to see action because of a hamstring strain.

In his limited time Monday, Sanchez can focus on building chemistry with free-agent pickup Derrick Mason, who was brought in to essentially replace Jerricho Cotchery, who was cut.

New York also lost Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith in free agency, but re-signed go-to receiver Santonio Holmes.

“I’m well prepared. I think this team has the potential to surpass what we did last year,” Sanchez said, “but it starts with this first game.”

Mason, entering his 15th season, has been hastily learning the playbook after spending his last six years in Baltimore.

“It’s going to take a lot of work,” the 37-year-old Mason said. “It’s going to take countless hours in the classroom. And then once we get into the classroom, we got to make sure that we take what we learn in the classroom onto the field.”

The Jets ranked 22nd in passing offence last season (202.6 yards per game), and Sanchez ranked 27th in passer rating among starters (75.3). Mason is projecting major improvement in the passing game, though he acknowledges that it may take some time to click.

“It’s not going to happen overnight. I wish it did,” he said. “It’s going to take a minute, but I think me knowing the system the way I do, I think it’s going to be quicker than what a lot of people anticipated.

“And then Plax, he’s only been here a week or two, and he’s picked up on the offence very well,” Mason said. “Once I get the nooks and crannies of the offence, I think we’re going to be very good.”

The Texans are hoping for a dramatic turnaround, too.

Houston overhauled its defensive personnel, acquiring cornerback Johnathan Joseph and safety Danieal Manning in free agency, and using six of eight draft picks on defensive players, including end J.J. Watt in the first round.

And with no off-season to spend with his players because of the lockout, Phillips has been working overtime to teach his new scheme.

“Defensively, I think Wade is very basic in what we’re fixing to go do Monday night,” Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. “We just want to see guys play, make sure they’re in the right spot. We’ve come a long way here in the first two weeks and we’ve got a grasp of the base stuff. That’s what we’re looking for.”

At the moment, Kubiak has more concerns on the offensive side, specifically at running back. Along with Foster, backups Steve Slaton and Ben Tate are also nursing hamstring injuries. That will leave most of the carries Monday night to Derrick Ward and former Texas star Chris Ogbonnaya, who’s impressed coaches in camp.

Kubiak says Matt Leinart will take the bulk of the snaps for the Texans. Leinart, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner, was a free agent and chose to return for a second season in Houston because he was comfortable with Kubiak and familiar with the system.

Leinart is expected to back up Matt Schaub this season, but openly says he wants to work his way into a starting role in the near future.

“I hope to carry over what I’ve been doing in practice to the game, just move the ball and score some points and play confident,” said Leinart, who didn’t throw a pass in 2010. “I want to get the guys in the right situations.”

Jets backup quarterback Mark Brunell travelled with the team but won’t play after injuring a finger on his left hand during practice Saturday. With the starters likely just going a quarter, that should leave most of the snaps to Greg McElroy, the team’s seventh-round pick, and undrafted free agent Drew Willy.

Aug 14, 2011 – The New York Jets will take the field for the first time in the 2011 season in Monday’s clash with the Houston Texans, though the team will wait to wait a little longer for the debut of its most notable new addition.

This preseason opener at Reliant Stadium was supposed to mark the NFL return of Plaxico Burress from a 2 1/2-year absence away from the game. However, the controversial wide receiver came down with a sprained ankle during the early portion of training camp and has since been ruled out by head coach Rex Ryan.

Burress last participated in a game in November of the 2008 season, while then a member of the crosstown foe New York Giants. He would miss the final five contests of that campaign as a result of an accidental gunshot wound in his leg while at a Manhattan night club, then spent the next two years out of football while imprisoned on charges stemming from that incident.

The Jets weren’t overly concerned about the 34-year-old’s absence, signing him to a one-year, $3 million contract in late July to become a part of a remade receiver corps that will be an area to watch for the 2010 AFC Championship Game participants this preseason.

Burress joins holdover Santonio Holmes, rookie Jeremy Kerley and 14-year pro Derrick Mason, a free-agent defection from Baltimore, in a new-look cast of targets for third-year quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets also lost key contributors Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith through free agency and released veteran Jerricho Cotchery shortly after the start of camp.

Ryan said he expects his first units to play about one quarter.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – LaDainian Tomlinson looked around quizzically when asked if this year’s New York Jets were the NFL’s version of a dream team.

Tomlinson, who restructured his contract to help the Jets sign more players, then laughed and said the obvious:

“We don’t have LeBron, D-Wade or Chris Bosh on the team.”

Still, LT wasn’t dismissing the notion the Jets are among the Super Bowl favourites as the most unusual preseason in NFL history begins following the 4 1/2 month lockout. Nor was Jets coach Rex Ryan, who called this the best roster he’s had since coming to New York, holding back.

“In my mind, there’s a great opportunity for us to win and that’s the No. 1 thing, in my mind to be somewhere where we have a chance to win the Super Bowl,” Tomlinson said Monday after the team’s first workout, a slow-paced walkthrough in 90-degree temperatures. “I have said it all along (about restructuring) and this was my being able to prove the words I’ve said.”

As usual, there were lots of words escaping rapidly from Ryan and his players. Re-signed receiver Santonio Holmes echoed Ryan’s previous bold proclamations when the Jets were reaching the last two AFC championship games, and new receiver Plaxico Burress seconded the notion that this is a team on the rise.

“I’m pretty sure Coach will tell you the same thing that I’d probably tell you — we are the team to beat,” Holmes said. “But that’s for us to feel like, and that’s what we’re supposed to feel like when we go into any game, that no matter who steps on the field, you have to come and beat us because we know we’re tough.”

Added Burress, who hasn’t played since 2008 and spent much of the last two years in jail on a gun charge:

“I looked at what these guys have here. They have a great coach that everyone wants to play for in Rex. I want to be able to show loyalty from the other side and help take them to a championship.”

Ryan, sporting a new tribal-style tattoo on the side of his right calf, reiterated his belief this is the Jets’ year to win their first NFL title since the 1969 Super Bowl. He also issued a challenge to 30 other teams.

“I think we need to find someone else besides the Jets to beat the New England Patriots,” Ryan said, noting New England won the division the last two seasons, forcing the Jets to play all their playoff games on the road. “Are you good enough to beat the New England Patriots? I’m challenging the league.”

New York beat New England twice in 2010, including a second-round playoff game. To enhance their chances of overtaking the Patriots and making that final leap into the Super Bowl, several Jets reworked their contracts, allowing them to keep Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, grab Burress and even be in the sweepstakes to sign cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha until he landed in Philadelphia.

Other than Burress, the Jets’ core is relatively the same as in 2009. Ryan expects further growth from his key players, particularly Mark Sanchez, who he now calls “our leader” after making the quarterback a team captain.

“Part of it is based on what I think our leader is going to do, the strides I see him taking,” Ryan said.

Sanchez, 4-2 in playoff games, all on the road, says he welcomes the responsibility. Of course, what else would he say?

“As a third-year quarterback and team captain, it’s time to step up and convey to them what it means to be a Jet and to play like a Jet,” Sanchez said, mentioning the Yankees’ Derek Jeter as “the best captain you can think of in New York.”

“My improvement determines any kind of ceiling this team can have and our potential,” he added. “It’s time for me to step up my game.”

Notes: Ryan said recently re-signed Eric Smith will be a starter at safety opposite Jim Leonhard, replacing the departed Brodney Pool. … Burress will wear his old number, 17, a further indication WR Braylon Edwards won’t return … Cromartie was travelling early Monday and arrived just after the morning walkthrough ended. … In their flurry of weekend moves, the team signed cornerback Donald Strickland, who played for the team in 2009 but went to San Diego last season as a free agent.

The New York Jets will not be re-signing wide receiver Braylon Edwards because of financial constraints, the New York Daily News reported Saturday, citing a source.

On Wednesday, the Jets agreed with Santonio Holmes on a five-year deal reportedly worth $50 million, which Edwards knew was not a good sign for him. He said later that same day that while he wanted to return to the Jets, he was afraid they did not want him.

“I would love to be a Jet but the feeling doesn’t seem to be mutual with the management,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Jets will reportedly now shift their focus to re-signing cornerback Antonio Cromartie after they missed out in the race for Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed with the Eagles.

Edwards avoided jail time this week in a probation violation hearing in Cleveland Municipal Court. The 28-year-old was given 100 hours of community work service and one year of active probation.

He had pleaded guilty the previous week to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and was on inactive probation in Cleveland at the time of his DWI arrest stemming for a fight outside a nightclub with a friend of LeBron James, the New York Post reported.

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards pleaded guilty Friday in his drunken driving case, pleased to get the case settled as it appeared the NFL’s labor dispute was nearing resolution.

“I feel good. I feel like it came to a fair conclusion,” Edwards said as he left a Manhattan court.

He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated charge and won’t face jail time or probation if he fulfills various obligations, including remaining in an NFL substance abuse counseling program that he’s been in since October.

“We’re happy that it’s past us, and now it’s really time to focus on football again,” he said.

Edwards, who must pay a $500 fine, will also have his driver’s license suspended for six months, and he must install a device that prevents a car from starting until the driver blows into a breath alcohol detector.

The 28-year-old, who will soon become a free agent, reiterated on Friday that he wants to stay with the Jets.

It’s not clear whether his guilty plea will prompt any suspension by the league, or whether it will affect his probation in Cleveland, where he pleaded no contest in January 2010 to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct.

Edwards, who was with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Jets in October 2009, had been accused of punching a friend of NBA star LeBron James outside a nightclub.

Police pulled Edwards over in Manhattan before dawn on September 21, saying his Land Rover’s windows were too dark.

When tested, Edwards’ blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit, police said.

Edwards had challenged the reason for the traffic stop as well as the accuracy of the alcohol breath test.

There is the quick update of the day.

Even though the NFL Lockout is still in place and free agency is on hold until a new league year starts, Plaxico Burress, recently released from prison, is already thinking about which teams he would be interested in signing with once things start up again. According to Jane McManus of ESPN New York, Burress recently discussed the New York Jets and the Houston Texans during an interview with the NFL Network.

Both teams offer a good opportunity for him. The Jets have two wide receiver free agents-to-be in Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes, which means one is likely to leave. That would give Burress an opportunity to start opposite the one that does re-sign.

As for the Texans, Burress sees that team on the rise, one that will finally go over the hump and make it into the playoffs. And playing with Andre Johnson, one of the top wide receivers in the league, is also a great opportunity for him.

Burress also spoke on a Philadelphia radio show and expressed interest in catching passes from Michael Vick, who previously served jail time for his illegal dog fighting activities and related charges. Burress said:

“Oh, it would be a dream come true,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for Mike, not just as a quarterback but as a person — you know what he’s overcome and what he’s went through and just the way he bounced back.

Whether he’s ready to hit the field right away and be in football condition still remains to be seen. But he certainly does appear to want to play for a team that will be in playoff contention right now.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A picture hangs in Bill McDermott’s basement that his son treasures more than any other.

It’s the one prominently displayed in the pool room of the family’s Philadelphia-area home with 18-year-old Michael McDermott posing next to New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“That was the first time I ever took my son to meet another executive or sports figure, and the first thing I asked Mike to do was to take a picture with my son,” said Bill McDermott, the co-CEO of SAP and a die-hard Jets fan. “Michael’s a huge fan as well and he just loves that picture.”

As a leader at one of the top providers of business software, McDermott has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in his field and shaken hands with a who’s who of sports figures: John Wooden, Ernie Els, Oscar Robertson and Gary Player, to name a few. A passion for sports runs deep in McDermott’s blood. After all, his late grandfather, Bobby, is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

So when an eager Tannenbaum called a few months ago to set up a meeting at SAP’s North American headquarters in Newtown Square, Pa., McDermott jumped at the chance to exchange thoughts on leadership and business philosophies.

“In running an organization, I think there are a lot of parallels, which is why I felt so fortunate that Bill allowed me to come down there and spend a few hours with him,” Tannenbaum said. “Ultimately, it’s about people, it’s about dreams and it’s about goals, and it may be business software or trying to win a Super Bowl, but I think there are more parallels than there aren’t.”

The three-hour meeting in late-May spawned an instant friendship between one man who has led his company to five straight quarters of double-digit economic growth since taking over and another who hopes to deliver on his team’s goal of winning a long-awaited second Super Bowl title — and first since McDermott rooted for Broadway Joe as a kid growing up in New York.

“I’ve never enjoyed any meeting, on an interpersonal level, more than my meeting with Mike Tannenbaum,” McDermott said by phone from Germany, where SAP’s global headquarters is located. “Not one. That’s saying something.”

The praise is mutual.

“Bill’s a remarkable guy who has walked with giants,” Tannenbaum said. “I know I’m better off because of that meeting.”

McDermott and Tannenbaum were so comfortable with each other, that a few minutes in, the talk turned to McDermott suggesting what Tannenbaum could do to improve the roster.

“Mike actually humored me and was interested in my opinion,” said a laughing McDermott, who watched the AFC championship game against Pittsburgh while he was in China by using Slingbox.

As an NFL general manager, the 42-year-old Tannenbaum knows better than to be complacent. That’s why he has reached out to several top business executives during the past few offseasons. He has met with Kevin Plank, the CEO and founder of Under Armour; Frank Bisignano, the chief administrative officer at J.P. Morgan Chase; and even three-time national title-winning coach Jim Calhoun of the University of Connecticut. Tannenbaum also has been able to glean leadership skills for years from his own boss, Jets owner Woody Johnson, whose family founded Johnson & Johnson.

“I’ve filled up yellow pads with information, things I’ve learned from everyone I’ve met with,” Tannenbaum said. “I have an affirmative obligation to Woody and the franchise that, are we doing everything we possibly can to be the best franchise in the world? I really did look at the NFL lockout as an opportunity to get out of our comfort zones and get out of our routines. This was an opportunity for us to get better.”

Since Tannenbaum took over as GM in 2006, the Jets have been to the playoffs three times — including reaching the AFC championship the past two seasons with Rex Ryan as coach.

“You look at our stadium, look at this facility, look at Rex and look at Mark Sanchez,” Tannenbaum said. “The foundation is there to truly be the golden era of this franchise and I want us to leave footprints for a long, long time. That’s our goal.”

Tannenbaum will have plenty of big decisions to make when the lockout ends. The Jets have several big-name players scheduled to become free agents, including Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Antonio Cromartie, and McDermott has already, of course, presented Tannenbaum his wish list.

“I would advise any of the players, if you want my true gut opinion on this, to not screw around for small change when you’ve got a chance to play for the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets” said McDermott, throwing in his own Namath and Ryan-like guarantee. “That’s something you can carry around with you for a lifetime, long after you’ve blown a lot of cash. So, if I was advising any of these players, I’d say they should re-sign with Mike Tannenbaum as quickly as you can.”

In a Wednesday interview with the NFL Network, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez expressed confidence in General Manager Mike Tannenbaum’s ability to bring Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, and Brad Smith back next year –

“I think that’s what Mike Tannenbaum does best and he’s the best GM in football. Mr. [Woody] Johnson, that’s part of his job. And Rex, that’s keeping all of us together. He wants the offense to run smooth, he wants us to pick up where we left off and to do that, we need all of our guys back. I think that would be the best-case scenario.”

It is nice to hear such confidence from Sanchez, but it would be just about a miracle if Tannenbaum could somehow find a way to get all three back. Considering the Jets just drafted two wide receivers and apparently do have a legitimate interest in Randy Moss, it sounds like the organization is prepared for the reality of one or two of them leaving.

Also in the interview, Sanchez revealed the Jets are planning to have a full team “lockout camp” this June. It is good to hear to the entire team will be together and that Sanchez is taking the lead to make sure it happens. We are going to need some type of news in June that isn’t related to court hearings.

NFL fans want the lockout to be resolved for a myriad reasons, but one of the primary ones is we’re all anxious to know where key free agents will be playing in 2011, and subsequently, what rosters will look like. No team may be faced with more tough choices in free agency when the lockout finally ends than the New York Jets. At the wide receiver position, the Jets must decide whether to re-sign Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes or both. There are mixed opinions amongst Jets fans about what the prudent decision would be over the long haul, but it’s fair to say that the vast majority hope both are back provided the Jets wouldn’t have to break the bank to do so.

Holmes granted a lengthy and interesting interview recently with ProFootballFocus, a stats-centric website that has published some interesting studies of late. The interviewer wisely avoided bugging Holmes about the lockout or his uncertain future as a free agent during the labor impasse.

The interview topics included Holmes’ charity work, his statistical output in 2010 from various formations, playing with two young quarterbacks — Ben Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez — to begin his career, playing for Rex Ryan and what areas of his game he feels need improving. Holmes was also asked about his workout schedule during the lockout. Here’s what he had to say:

Steve Wyremski (SW): How’s the offseason going so far? What have you been up to?

Santonio Holmes (SH): Mostly laying low. Training as usual throughout the mornings… every day five days a week. [I’ve been] spending some time with the family. Just sitting back and resting, man. Waiting to see what’s going to happen with the season.

SW: Your workout schedule right now. Take me through a typical day.

SH: I arrive at workouts at about 8:30 in the morning. I go through normal lift days [and] depending on what day it is… upper body or lower body. The workout is about an hour / hour and a half in the weight room. We leave the weight room and go out to the football field and do football specifics whether we’re cutting, doing agilities, running through cones, doing bungee cords, working on the track, speed work, going through the sand pit, [and] jogging 2-3 miles a day. That’s pretty much it.

SW: I saw you’re out training with a bunch of other guys – Chris Johnson, William Gay – you guys all training out there together?

SH: Yeah, we’ve been training together for the past three years. I’ve been in the league six years now, so I’ve been there the past six years. It’s myself, Ike Taylor, James Farrior, just to name a few guys I’ve been training with.

I encourage you to check out the rest of the interview. Plenty of good stuff in there while we patiently wait for news on the lockout front.

Mar 23, 2011 - With the uncertain labor landscape in the NFL, it is hard to project what will happen in terms of personnel moves with any team in the league. However, the rumblings coming out of the league meetings this week from Rex Ryan and some of the local media are concerning.

First off, Ryan has confirmed the Jets won’t be adding a quarterback this off-season, which means the offense will again rely on Mark Brunell as the primary backup, with Kellen Clemens likely being the third stringer. Unless you have faith in a 41 year old who hasn’t thrown a meaningful pass since 2006 (back when Eric Mangini was the Mangenius and appearing on Sopranos episodes, just so you know how long ago that was), or the very definition of a mediocre NFL quarterback in Clemens, it is clear the Jets would have a major issue if Mark Sanchez was hurt for any period of time.

Sanchez and hurt in the same sentence, shouldn’t jump off the page to you. The guy is heading into his third year and has already hurt both knees and his throwing shoulder. Kind of sounds like the type of guy you’d like quality insurance for, no? The Jets need to do the right thing, which is go sign a better veteran option like Bruce Gradkowski or Billy Volek and then draft a development quarterback to be a long term backup for Sanchez.

Second, it is sounding more and more like Antonio Cromartie has been placed as the Jets third priority after both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards. Listen, I know at first glance many people would agree with this line of thinking. We all know Holmes is coming back and many people think Edwards should be brought back also before worrying about Cromartie. Yes, Edwards did have a great year for the team in 2010 and yes he provides a rare blend of size and speed. However, bringing him back before Cromartie is simply the wrong move.

It comes down to this, the Jets can’t afford to have Kyle Wilson, Drew Coleman, or Dwight Lowery starting at corner in their defense. They don’t have the pass rush to protect being thrown at constantly as teams try to avoid Darrelle Revis. You need physical corners who can handle man to man coverage and consistently being put on an island, and say what you want about Cromartie, he can.

The Jets can afford to run their offense without Braylon Edwards. Dustin Keller is more than capable of taking on a bigger role and flexing out at wide receiver to provide size at the position. Also, Jerricho Cotchery has proven throughout his career to be a good starting receiver and he’d be just fine opposite Holmes.

The Jets are a run first offense and a defense that is built around their corners playing to man to man coverage. Why would you ever bring two receivers back before bringing a quality starting corner back?

Despite appearing in two consecutive AFC Championship Games, the New York Jets roster could use plenty of tweaking this off-season. Unfortunately, it appears they will likely be very limited in the maneuvering they will be able to make, although after the last couple of years it would be foolish to put anything past Mike Tannenbaum.

Â

It is likely an injunction will be ruled on April 6th, which should bring a start to some form of an off-season. The Jets will be cuffed by the same “Final Eight” rules they were last year, which will keep them from having a spending spree on free agents. It remains to be seen how trades will be able to work, considering how fluid the situation could end up being in the coming months.

Â

In April’s draft, the Jets only have six selections and are without a second round pick. This is a scary prospect considering this team has only drafted seven players over the past two years. It is starting to affect their depth and age on the roster. Beyond that, last year’s draft class was on the whole very disappointing. Tannenbaum needs to leave this year’s draft with a few contributors and at least six total players, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he traded down for more picks.

Â

On the defensive side of the football, the Jets badly need an infusion of age and speed on their line and at the outside linebacker position. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets ended up spending three picks on their defensive front seven. You could also never count out a Rex Ryan coached team to avoid taking a safety or corner, especially when the Jets only have one of their top four safeties under contract as of right now.

Â

On offense, more depth is still needed on the offensive line after the release of Damien Woody. A developmental receiver would also make sense, if either Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes doesn’t return in 2011. Finally, the Jets need a long term answer at backup quarterback.

Â

Looking back the past few years, Tannenbaum struck gold in 2007 with Darrelle Revis and David Harris. He whiffed in 2008 on Vernon Gholston and most of his late round picks, although he did grab Dustin Keller at the end of the first round. In 2009, he went three for three with Mark Sanchez in the first round, Shonn Greene in third round, and Matt Slauson in the sixth round. As we said before, his 2010 class didn’t look all too promising last year. Hopefully, this means he is due for a big year and will make the most of the Jets six selections.

NEW YORK

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards made a brief appearance in Manhattan criminal court Monday before the judge decided to adjourn his case until May 16.

The 28-year-old free agent told reporters he still wants to play for the Jets this coming season, and his attorney filed legal motions challenging the accuracy of the blood alcohol exams that show Edwards was at twice the legal limit.

“I talked to Rex … a couple of days ago, more a catching up type of thing,” Edwards said after the hearing, referring to Jets head coach Rex Ryan. “The interest is there on their side. The interest is there on my side, so we have to wait to see what happens.”

Last Sept. 21, police in Manhattan pulled over Edwards’ Range Rover for having excessively tinted windows. Cops said he appeared intoxicated and blew a 0.16 (twice the legal limit) on a Breathalyzer test.

His attorney, Peter Frankel, filed routine motions challenging the accuracy of the two tests Edwards was given, one in the field and one back at the precinct, that indicated the star player was drunk.

Edwards and all other NFL players cannot sign new contracts until the league’s labor situation is resolved. The deadline on the expiring collective bargaining agreement was extended one week to this coming Friday, and negotiations resumed Monday in Washington.

The drunken driving charge isn’t Edwards’ first brush with the law. Two days before he was traded to the Jets in October 2009 he allegedly punched a local party promoter at a Cleveland nightclub.

He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge and was given probation.

Edwards is coming off a solid season in which he posted 53 catches for 904 yards and seven touchdown s to help the Jets reach the AFC Championship Game for the second straight year.
