New York Jets’ Joe McKnight Named AFC Special…

Read More: Joe McKnight (RB – NYJ), New York Jets, Buffalo Bills

New York Jets’ running back and kickoff returner Joe McKnight was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October, the NFL announced Thursday.

McKnight returned 11 kickoffs for 443 yards during the month, including a 107-yard kick return in a Week 4 loss against Baltimore, the longest play in Jets history. His 40.3-yard kickoff return average for the month topped the NFL, as does his 40-yard average for the season.

Against Miami in Week 6, McKnight totaled 198 kickoff return yards, including an 88-yard kickoff return.  He becomes just the fourth Jet to win Special Teams Player of the Month honors, joining returner Justin Miller (Oct., 2006), kick returner Brad Smith (Dec.,  2010) and punter Tom Tupa (Nov., 1999).

Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters he expects McKnight to play a bigger role Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

“Absolutely he’ll get more opportunities this week,” Ryan said.

“I think he’s earned it and he’s done a great job even as a receiver,” Ryan added. “(Buffalo) is using (C.J.) Spiller a lot as a receiver too. You get an explosive athlete and you look for ways to use him and I can see us using him a little more this week.”

New York Jets sign former Buffalo Bills tight end…

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets have signed free agent tight end Shawn Nelson, a former Buffalo Bills fourth-round draft pick.

Nelson had 21 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown in two seasons with the Bills, who are also the Jets’ next opponent Sunday in Buffalo. He was suspended for the first four games last season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and appeared in only five games before being placed on the reserve/injured non-football injury list as a result of migraines.

Nelson, among the Bills’ final cuts in September, was expected to practice with the Jets on Monday.

The Jets have also signed linebacker Ricky Sapp, a fifth-round pick of Philadelphia last year, guard Matt Kroul, tackle Dennis Landolt and tight end Jamarko Simmons to the practice squad.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

New York Jets re-sign former Bills first-round…

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets have re-signed linebacker Aaron Maybin, hoping the former Buffalo Bills draft pick can boost their pass rush.

Maybin, a 2009 first-round pick of the Bills, was signed by the Jets in August and cut Sept. 4 after making New York’s initial 53-man roster.

He failed to live up to his lofty draft position while in Buffalo, registering no sacks and never making it into the starting lineup. But Jets coach Rex Ryan repeatedly said he was excited about Maybin’s speed and potential as a pass-rushing outside linebacker before they cut him.

Maybin had 1 1/2 sacks in the Jets’ preseason finale against Philadelphia.

The Jets also signed linebacker Eddie Jones to the practice squad.

New York Jets Lose Rob Turner, Acquire Aaron…

Turner, the Jets’ backup center, broke his leg in the team’s first preseason game on Monday. After the Houston Texans’ defensive end, J.J. Watt, pushed through backup center Vladimir Ducasse and quarterback Mark Sanchez, Turner’s leg suffered the blow.

After Sanchez fell on Turner’s right leg, the center was carried off of the field. On Tuesday The New York Daily News reported that an MRI determined a fracture in Turner’s leg which could take up to 10 weeks to heal.

Although ESPN does not consider Turner a “household name”, the center is diverse and can also play tight end or guard. The first preseason game was tough for Jets’ coach Rex Ryan, who also had to come to grips with injuries to guard Brandon Moore and center Nick Mangold before the game.

“I think we’ll feel better when Brandon and Mangold get back out there,” Ryan said, according to ESPN.

While the Jets’ offense may be struggling with depth, Ryan announced a new addition to the team’s defense. The coach announced that Aaron Maybin, former Buffalo Bills’ linebacker, would join the Jets.

Ryan said he is willing to take time to develop the player.

“I think he’s got some talent, some pass-rush ability,” Ryan said, according to ESPN reports. “If he sticks on our team, he’s going to be a pass rusher for us. We don’t need him to be a starter. We’ve got two excellent starters at outside linebacker already.”

Maybin, the 11th overall draft pick in Buffalo who did not perform to critics’ expectations, will sign a one-year contract with the Jets. Chafie Fields,Maybin’s agent, said he is excited to join the team and play his old squad during the season.

“We wanted to get him out there and give him an opportunity to perform,” Fields told the Buffalo News. “He’s ecstatic. He gets to play Buffalo twice, which sparked a little something in him. He’s a fan of Rex Ryan. He said, ‘I’m going to get to see Buffalo twice and I can’t wait.’ ”

Aaron Maybin, New York Jets agree to one-year deal

Aaron Maybin and the New York Jets have reached agreement on a one-year deal, Coach Rex Ryan confirmed in a press conference.

Maybin, a draft bust who was cut by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, would bolster the pass rush, Ryan said, if he can make the team. And that may be one big “if.” Maybin, nicknamed “Maybe” by Bills fans, was the 11th pick overall in the 2009 draft — and has no sacks. A standout at Penn State, Maybin most likely would be a backup in Ryan’s 3-4 defense. He’ll play for the league minimum.

“We wanted to get him out there and give him an opportunity to perform,” said Chafie Fields, Maybin’s agent, told the Buffalo News.

“He’s ecstatic. He gets to play Buffalo twice, which sparked a little something in him. He’s a fan of Rex Ryan. He said, ‘I’m going to get to see Buffalo twice and I can’t wait.’ ”

New York Jets Player Uses Free Time to Preach

Jimmy Clausen, a quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, went back to Notre Dame to pick up the credits he needed to earn a degree. Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd has been working on a random acts of kindness program. And others are working out, trying to stay in shape.

New York Jets defensive lineman Mike DeVito did something out of the ordinary recently with his time. He preached a sermon at Relevant Christian Church in Randolph, N.J. The 26-year-old is considering a career as a pastor or youth pastor after his football career is over.

The Associated Press reported that DeVito has been working with Pastor Adam Burt, a former NHL defenceman who has served as the Jets chaplain for three years.

“When I saw Michael’s heart, he has a real passion in it,” said Burt in the AP story, who is also the itinerant pastor at RCC. “As much of a mountain of a man as he is, he loves people deeply. I had no idea that his heart would be like, ‘Hey, someday I might like to do this,’ but the closer I get to him, I can definitely see the call of God being on his life and that’s exciting.”

DeVito shared his testimony with athletes at West Point and Columbia University in April.

Like us on Facebook

“I feel that with this platform God has given me, it has allowed me to meet people, reach out to kids and be in situations where football facilitates it, but it allows me to talk about God,” DeVito said. “I love talking to the youth and trying to set the right example because if you can set a good foundation right from the start, it’s going to help them avoid so many problems down the line.”

DeVito admitted he was nervous before he preached his sermon, but the man who likes to tweet Bible verses and use the word “brother,” took to Twitter afterward to talk about how much he appreciated the opportunity.

“Very grateful that @pastorads [Pastor Burt] had the FAITH to let me preach my first sermon today at his church in Randolph,” DeVito tweeted. “Have a great sunday brothers!”

It sounds like DeVito is looking for more opportunities to speak about his faith.

“As much as I do want to get back to football and back to work, I’m not going to let this time go to waste,” DeVito said. “I’m just trying to see what path God has for me, and what better time than now? I won’t take this for granted.”

Gailey sees Bills and Dolphins as equals

BUFFALO — Chan Gailey couldn’t deny the Buffalo Bills have some growing to do before they catch up to the New England Patriots and New York Jets.

He suggested the Bills are already on the same level as the Miami Dolphins.

Gailey spoke at a luncheon Tuesday at the Adam’s Mark hotel and gave his thoughts on where the Bills stand in the AFC East.

“I like the challenge of our division,” Gailey told the Monday Quarterback Club. “If you can go play well in our division, then you can compete for the whole thing.

“The old saying, ‘If you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the best,’ that’s where we are. We have some of the best teams in football in our division. We’ve got to go beat the best. That’s our objective. You get a quick read on where you are as a football team by playing those guys twice a year.”

The Bills have finished in last place each of the past three seasons and haven’t made the playoffs since the 1999 season.

In that stretch, the Patriots have won three Super Bowls and at least tied for the division’s best record every year.

“If you look at New England, you’ve got to play unbelievable defense against them,” Gailey said. “They can move the ball just about on anybody. They had a bad day against the Jets in the playoff game, but when [Tom] Brady’s healthy and in top form, they’re good. Their offensive line is good. They’ve played together for quite a while. They create problems for you with all that they do on offense.

“Defensively, they were probably down a little this year. They gave up more yards than they had in years past. That probably — I don’t know this for sure — probably will be their focus coming up in the next year, how to improve their defense.”

The Bills obviously are behind the Jets, too. The Jets have advanced to the AFC Championship Game two years in a row.

“The Jets are strong,” Gailey said. “They’re a physical football team. We’ll have to fight to get to where they are. I think we can. I don’t think it’s that far away. … They’ve got some good, veteran players. You just have to accept that challenge each time you play them.”

But Gailey wasn’t as deferential in regard to the Dolphins, who won the AFC East title in 2008 but have posted consecutive 7-9 seasons. The Bills split with them last year, winning at Sun Life Stadium.

“Miami, we could’ve had them at home,” Gailey said. “We did go down there and get them. I think we have got a chance to match up with them pretty good in the years to come. I like where our team is heading.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

New York Giants Get 19th Pick in NFL Draft Round 1, Jets Start With 30th

The New York Giants will get the 19th selection in the first round of the National Football League draft, while the New York Jets have the 30th pick.

The Carolina Panthers have the first overall selection, followed by the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers end round one that begins April 28 in New York.

The Jets have six selections; the Giants have seven.

The Jets traded their second-round pick to the San Diego Chargers when they acquired cornerback Antonio Cromartie last season. The team’s other selections are 94 (third round), 126 (fourth), 161 (fifth), 194 (sixth) and 208 (seventh).

The Jets got the seventh round pick when the team traded Kerry Rhodes to Arizona.

The Giants’ picks are 52 (second round), 83 (third), 117 (fourth), 185 and 198 (sixth) and 221 (seventh).

The NFL awarded 32 compensatory picks to 23 teams who lost more players during free agency than they signed in the previous year.

The NFL, in issuing its updated draft order, reinstated the seventh-round choice of the Detroit Lions, who had appealed the loss of the pick in a tampering case lodged by the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Detroit will retain its seventh-round pick in 2011 (obtained from Denver), which is the second pick of the seventh round, and will instead forfeit a selection in next year’s draft,” the NFL said in a statement issued last night.

‘Hard Knocks’ opting out of AFC East

NEW ORLEANS — The New York Jets were content to be one-and-done on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the front-runners to be featured this summer.

The New England Patriots aren’t the kind of organization to give cameras access to their inner workings. Same can be said for the Miami Dolphins. The Buffalo Bills would be the only other AFC East team fathomable for the show.

A Jets spokesman confirmed the Jets declined to pursue a second season.

Based on ratings for the training camp reality show, the Jets would have been a hot contender to repeat. Head coach Rex Ryan’s profanity-laced speeches and an assortment of entertaining storylines such as Mark Sanchez’s development, Darrelle Revis’ lockout and Antonio Cromartie’s children made “Hard Knocks” must-see TV.

No team has been chosen for consecutive seasons. The Dallas Cowboys were the only team to be featured twice, in 2002 and 2008.

“We will give Rex and the Jets the year off from ‘Hard Knocks.’ But you never know what the future holds,” HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said in a statement to the New York Post a few weeks ago. “It took many years before there was a ‘Star Wars’ sequel. Hopefully someday Rex and the New York Jets will be back on HBO.”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets are heading to the postseason on a positive note.

Mark Brunell threw two touchdown passes in relief of Mark Sanchez, Joe McKnight ran for a career-high 158 yards and New York’s defense was dominant in a lopsided playoff tuneup as the Jets routed the Buffalo Bills 38-7 on Sunday.

New York (11-5) rested several stars, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, but still earned the fourth 11-win season in franchise history – and first since the 1998 team went to the AFC championship game. The Jets, the No. 6 seed, were waiting to see where they will travel next weekend.

It’s the second time in as many seasons the Jets are going to the playoffs under Rex Ryan. Green and white confetti trickled through the air after the game, and several players high-fived fans in a victory lap around the New Meadowlands Stadium.

Sanchez is dealing with a sore right shoulder, but started and played only one series before being replaced by Brunell. He handed off nine times without a throw, including one called back for a penalty, on New York’s opening drive that ended with Nick Folk’s 28-yard field goal.

Brad Smith came in three times during the opening drive and took direct snaps from the Jets’ version of the wildcat and had three runs for 62 yards, while McKnight had seven carries for 25 yards and John Conner had a 2-yard run.

Ryan said during the week that Sanchez would start so he could maintain the rhythm he had the last few weeks, but wasn’t sure how long he’d play. Turned out, if you blinked, you missed him. Brunell replaced Sanchez to start the Jets’ second offensive series, and it was all New York the rest of the afternoon.

The defense swarmed Brian Brohm, starting for Ryan Fitzpatrick, all game and forced the Bills (4-12) into six turnovers. New York intercepted Brohm three times, including a 35-yard return for a score by Marquice Cole, and sacked him three times. Buffalo was held to 162 totals yards, compared to New York’s 388, and the Bills gained just 37 yards on the ground.

It was a good performance by a defensive unit that went back to basics during the week of practice after a handful of subpar games.

One of the biggest cheers came when Kellen Clemens, the Jets’ third quarterback, scrambled 10 yards for a touchdown to put New York up 31-7 with 9:18 left.

Brunell finished 6 of 12 for 110 yards and touchdowns to Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards. He also threw an interception, which accounted for Buffalo’s only points as Jairus Byrd returned it 37 yards for a score early in the third quarter.

McKnight, making his first NFL start in a disappointing rookie season, got the bulk of the work on the ground, rushing 32 times while Tomlinson and Shonn Greene watched from the sideline.

The loss capped another lousy season for the Bills, who were trying to win their regular-season finale in consecutive years for the first time since 1998-2000. Buffalo will miss the playoffs for the 11th straight year, tied with Detroit for the NFL’s longest active drought.

Cole, starting for Cromartie, who was resting a tweaked groin, gave the Jets a 10-0 lead with 9:07 left in the half after intercepting Brohm’s pass intended for Steve Johnson and returning it 35 yards for a score. Calvin Pace popped Brohm and tipped the pass just as he was throwing, forcing the ball to float toward a leaping Cole.

Cole had another interception late in the game, setting up Conner’s 16-yard touchdown run that capped the scoring.

Holmes caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brunell to give the Jets a 17-0 lead with 15 seconds left in the opening half. It was Brunell’s first scoring throw since he tossed one against Dallas in November 2006, when he was with Washington.

Brunell threw his second touchdown pass with 6:41 left in the third quarter when Edwards leaped above Leodis McKelvin and then sprinted down the left sideline for a 52-yard score that made it 24-7.

Brohm finished 10 for 23 for 106 yards and three interceptions in his second NFL start. Fitzpatrick was inactive after missing practice all week with a right knee injury.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez says shoulder is ‘pretty sore’

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — After just eight handoffs in his brief start against the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said his right shoulder was “pretty sore.”

That soreness remains after a week of very light work during practice in the week leading up to the game. After the 38-7 win over the Bills, Sanchez was asked if his doctors have talked about the possibility of surgery in the offseason.

“They bounced ideas around,” Sanchez said. “But it’s so far in advance hopefully we’re not talking about it for another month.”

Sanchez has some cartilage damage, but it isn’t clear if it’s problematic or just natural wear and tear. The second-year quarterback said that his physicians have assured him that he isn’t doing further damage to his shoulder by continuing to play through the injury.

“The doctors would have said something about that first,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez initially injured his shoulder when he fell awkwardly in Pittsburgh trying to run the ball. A week later after a loss to Chicago he said the shoulder was “very sore,” and said it was “pretty sore” after the game Sunday.

Sanchez said he will be ready to play when the Jets head to Indianapolis for the first game of the playoffs next weekend.

“I’m going to play — it’s not a big deal,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez was replaced in the game by 40-year-old backup Mark Brunell, who threw touchdown passes to wide receivers Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. The scoring pass to Holmes was the first Brunell had made since 2006. Brunell also threw an interception.

The Jets then used wide receiver Brad Smith at quarterback. Smith played the position at Missouri. Kellen Clemens ran the ball for a touchdown in the fourth quarter when he came in at the spot.

Sanchez said he had an idea that he wouldn’t play much going into the Bills game, and that he wouldn’t be passing the ball. After the Chicago loss, coach Rex Ryan was leaning toward resting his starter, but he seemed to rethink that as the week went along. By Thursday, Ryan announced that Sanchez was starting and that it was a matter of keeping his head in the game.

“I never wanted him to get hit or anything else,” Ryan said. “It was one of those things that we weren’t going to throw the football with him. We accomplished everything we wanted during the week. We kept his preparation the same way.”

Sunday, Ryan opted to rest a number of starters, including running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene, and cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie.

Asked what the point of starting was if he played just one series and made eight handoffs, Sanchez showed his sense of humor was fully intact.

“Keeping the streak alive,” he said with a smile. “Lookout, Brett.”

Slumping Jets go back to step one

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets have spent the last few days getting back to basics on defense.

Good thing it’s only Week 17.

With the playoffs coming up, better late than never. Especially for a unit that needs to improve in a hurry.

“We better, or we’ll be out quick,” Coach Rex Ryan said Friday. “I believe we’ll play well. I really do.”

Aggressive, punishing defenses are Ryan’s bread and butter, and the Jets have been far from dominant. Sure, they’re ranked fourth in overall defense – not bad at face value. But New York has had several disappointing lapses, particularly in the last few weeks.

That prompted Ryan to stand in front of his players and hold an hour-long meeting on the base defense. A refresher course, of sorts.

“It was good,” defensive end Shaun Ellis said. “It was one of those meetings where he was going through every little detail that we kind of forgot about, things we can do and get accomplished within the defense and why it’s called. Guys kind of got away from that.”

The Jets have allowed 14 offensive touchdowns in the last four games, and given up over 300 total yards in three games in December. Granted, one of their best performances came in a 10-6 loss to Miami three weeks ago, but the inconsistency has frustrated Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

“We summarized some of the mistakes and when the mistakes start to show up as things that are from ‘Jets Defense: 101′ as opposed to 401, that’s when you need to go back and make sure,” Pettine said. “Sometimes as a coach, when you think guys know, you have to make sure. That’s one of those things where we thought this week was a good week to do it.”

The Jets (10-5) have already clinched a playoff berth, and take on a Buffalo Bills (4-11) team that is trying to end its season on a positive note. While some starters might be rested in the game, Ryan used the week of practice to get everyone back on the same page.

“You assume that you know it,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “I wouldn’t call it a sophomore slump, but whenever you’ve been in something for two years, then you become comfortable and sometimes relaxed and you assume that you know more than you know. What happens is that you forget those small, minute details that are important.”

Ryan started with having more individual practice periods, where techniques – pad levels, footwork, separating off blocks, pursuing the football and taking proper tackling angles – were all stressed. Just like back in training camp.

“Through the course of the season, with our style of play and with new things going in every week, you kind of get away from the base stuff,” Ellis said. “We’re just trying to get back to our base core and things we do good, and just bring that out in the game, penetration in the run game and just causing havoc. Instead of waiting on blockers, go attack them.”

Ryan said all season that the Jets would finish with the league’s top-ranked defense, as they did a year ago. But their play hasn’t matched their coach’s bold expectations.

“We became more of a read defense instead of attacking aggressively,” Ellis said. “Everybody realized that, and that’s why we were playing a little slow. So, now it’s like, ‘OK, guys, we’ve got to attack. Don’t wait for it to come to you. Force it.’ That’s what we did all last year, we were attacking the whole time.”

In the last two weeks, the Jets have allowed Chicago’s Matt Forte to run for 113 yards and Pittsburgh’s Rashard Mendenhall to rush for 99. Having players in consecutive weeks roll up that many yards on the ground is almost unheard of against a Ryan-led defense. Before Forte’s performance, New York hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher since Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew in Week 10 last season. (next page »)

New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez to start; no word on playing time

Updated: December 30, 2010, 2:48 PM ET

Momentum overcame fear as coach Rex Ryan has decided to start Mark Sanchez against the Buffalo Bills Sunday despite the New York Jets quarterback nursing a sore shoulder.

Ryan did not say how much Sanchez would play in the team’s regular-season finale.

“He would not be out there if we didn’t think he was healthy,” Ryan said.

The Jets don’t have anything to play for against the Bills in terms of playoff position because they are locked into the No. 6 seed. But Ryan has said that it’s important for the team to win its 11th game, a rare occurrence for the franchise.

Ryan has waffled on the Sanchez decision, saying after Sunday’s loss in Chicago that he doesn’t want to play Sanchez. But the next day, he backtracked, expressing concern that Sanchez might lose his edge if he sits a week.

By Wednesday, Ryan was in the middle ground, saying maybe yes, maybe no.

Sanchez has played well the past two games despite what sources say is a sore shoulder that includes minor cartilage damage. He gave the obligatory “I prefer to play” comments, comparing himself to a hot basketball shooter who wants to keep shooting. But at the same time, he said Ryan’s wait-and-see approach won’t affect his preparation.

“I’m preparing like I’m going to play, watching film, taking as many reps as possible and still being smart about my shoulder,” Sanchez said. “So until he says, ‘Not in,’ I’m treating it like a regular game.”

But Ryan saw enough good to decide to start him.

“You guys see him out there,” Ryan told reporters. “He looks healthy.”
