FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Rex Ryan expects Brian Schottenheimer to be running the New York Jets’ offence again next season.

Unless, of course, the embattled offensive co-ordinator becomes a head coach elsewhere.

Schottenheimer has been widely criticized by fans and some media as the Jets’ offence has struggled all season and quarterback Mark Sanchez has not progressed the way the team expected. Some reports have speculated that Schottenheimer’s job could be in serious jeopardy if the Jets fail to make the playoffs.

“I’ll say that, obviously, if he gets a head coaching job, then ‘See you later,’” Ryan said Friday. “I’ll be happy to see that. Do I expect him back? It’s probably 50-50 on that, because I think there is an opportunity for Brian to get a head coaching job this year. I thought it the first two years, but it wasn’t to be. He certainly will be a qualified applicant to be a head coach, that’s for sure.”

Schottenheimer has turned down a few interview opportunities in previous years to remain with the Jets, including Buffalo’s vacancy after the 2009 season. But with increasing criticism of the 27th-ranked offence and Schottenheimer’s play calling, he potentially could look elsewhere this time around.

Although Ryan mostly sidestepped the issue earlier in the week, Friday marked his most definitive show of support for Schottenheimer. When asked what would happen if Schottenheimer does not get a head coaching job this off-season, Ryan responded: “Then, I expect him back.”

Schottenheimer signed a two-year contract extension in the off-season that would keep him with the Jets through the 2013 season, and he said Thursday he would like to remain with the team.

“I’ve said all along, I love being here,” he said. “All I’m worried about is this weekend, because that is what I can control.”

The Jets (8-7) will play the Dolphins (5-10) in Miami on Sunday needing a win and plenty of help from other teams if they are to make the post-season for the third straight year.

Schottenheimer doesn’t think he needs his offence to have a great game to save his job, and he has taken similar heat at times in his previous five seasons with the Jets. But the public outcry against him has been stronger than ever — a Facebook page has been set up to support the cause — and owner Woody Johnson could potentially look to send a message if New York fails to reach the post-season after consecutive trips to the AFC title game.

Most players have publicly supported Schottenheimer, saying there’s plenty of blame to pass around for their subpar performance.

“We appreciate him being the type of guy to stand up in front of us and say, ‘You know what, guys? My mistake on that. That was a bad call by me,’” running back LaDainian Tomlinson said of Schottenheimer. “He’s done that plenty of times. So who are we to criticize? When I miss a block, that’s my own fault. I missed the block. We just have to hold each other accountable and have each other’s backs at all times.”

Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, was surprisingly upbeat when he met with the media Thursday and insisted he wasn’t letting the criticism get to him.

“Rex and I talk about that all the time,” Schottenheimer said. “We learn so much about this game, just growing up around our fathers, that maybe it allows you to handle things like this a little bit better than most.”

Notes: LB Garrett McIntyre (knee) is questionable for Sunday’s game after being limited in practice. CB Antonio Cromartie (hamstring) and S Eric Smith (knee) also were limited, but Ryan says both will play. … S Jim Leonhard was in the locker-room for the first time since surgery two weeks ago on the torn patellar tendon in his right knee that ended his season. He was on crutches and said his recovery would be up to six months. Leonhard, coming off his second straight serious season-ending injury, is due to become a free agent in March. “I’m 100 per cent confident that I’m going to be playing football somewhere next year,” he said. “Obviously, with the history here, you’d like it to be here, but you never know.” Added Ryan: “A guy like Jimmy Leonhard, I expect that he will be able to come back. I don’t think he is through playing.” … The Jets announced their team awards, which included CB Darrelle Revis being named MVP by his teammates, Tomlinson selected “most inspirational” and TE Dustin Keller named the “Walter Payton Man Of The Year” for his extensive charity work.

“I’ve said it for three years now: I don’t care if I’m known as the luckiest coach in the league,” Ryan said Monday. “That’s great.

“I’ve said it for three years now: I don’t care if I’m known as the luckiest coach in the league,” Ryan said Monday. “That’s great. As long as we win, that’s fine with me.”

New York (6-5) kept pace in the AFC playoff race with the win that snapped a two-game skid, but the Jets realize they need to be a lot better if they intend to make it to the postseason for the third straight year. They entered the game against the Bills with many players saying they needed to win all six of their final games to reach the playoffs.

The Jets got the first one, but it was hardly convincing — especially when Ryan Fitzpatrick was driving the Bills down the field in the closing seconds.

“It was scary,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said with a laugh.

It was a victory that was filled with lots of juicy story lines including Johnson mocking Burress by pretending he was shot during a touchdown celebration, Mark Sanchez having another mediocre performance despite setting a career high with four TD passes and Burress coming up with a one-handed grab for a first down that saved the Jets’ season, at least for now.

There was also the Jets’ defense appearing as if it was about to have another late-game collapse. But this time, the Jets survived three close calls. A wide-open Johnson dropped a pass in the middle of the field that might have gone for a touchdown. Fitzpatrick misfired on a pass to Johnson a few seconds later, zipping the ball just behind the receiver in the end zone. Johnson was open again on the last play of the game, but Fitzpatrick’s throw was way over his head.

“It wasn’t real pretty,” Ryan said, “but we’ll take it.”

Many expected the Jets to win easily, considering the Bills had several starters sidelined with injuries and New York has played its best under Ryan in desperate situations. Instead, it was a nail-biter that left the Jets and their fans drained.

Few players showed up in the locker room during media availability Monday, and those who did weren’t exactly celebrating.

“I think there’s still room to push our team,” Revis said.

The win also had some in the media far from convinced that this is a playoff-caliber team, saying that it could easily be 5-6 without a little bit of luck.

“It is funny how if we make a mistake, we’re horrible and it’s, ‘Oh, they’re terrible,’” Ryan said. “That could be bad luck there, too. But if we make a play, it’s, ‘Oh, we’re just lucky.’ So, maybe it’s the green (team colors). I don’t know. I hope karma is with us. I hope we continue to be lucky, and we’ll take that.

“The old saying, ‘I’d rather be lucky than good.’ I’d rather be both, and I think we are.”

But there were moments, particularly early, when it appeared Sanchez could be headed to the bench because of poor throws, bad decisions and the offense just being ineffective. Despite taking away some snaps in practice last week to fire up the quarterback, it was more of the same old Sanchez. That is, until the final drive.

What are your opinions.

“J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets!! Jets!!!” This is what every person yells who bleeds green and white on a football day or night because they know the New York Jets are in their flight mode, or as Santonio Holmes likes to say, ‘Tone Time,’ ready to win this game so they’re a step closer holding the Lamordi Trophy. Because everyone knows, when a team holds the Lombardi Trophy, they have every right to say they were the best in the world that year. Yes, the Jets deserve to say that!

I’m definitely not the one who is going to talk bad about the NY Jets because I believe they are strong, tough, fun trash-talkers, intelligent nice guys who all need a Super Bowl ring and many more. The flight boys can make some mistakes every now and again but making mistakes helps people learn to make better choices on and off the field.

The offense is coming together in ways that we may not always have to count on defense to win games. No one really talks about quarterback Mark Sanchez’s weapons, so I will! He goes from wide receivers Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes to Jeremy Kerley, then to his tight end number 81, Dustin Keller (remember this name!) and if he wants to run the ball, running backs Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson are there backing him up. While Sanchez is busy throwing the ball, he has the best center, Nick Mangold, leading the offensive line.

When I watch the Jets offense, it gives me the idea that if I put my mind to something, the end results will be fantastic. Touchdown! The Jets defense, though, teaches me to never give up and be tough.

Where should I even begin with their defense? Rex Ryan had made comments about how it would be sweet if his defense were better than the 85 Chicago Bears defense. But 26 years from now, people will want their team to be like the 2011 Jets defense. When I finally own a NFL team in my future, I would want it so bad; I might beg linebackers Bart Scott, David Harris cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis to be on my team.

I love number 51 on defense, Aaron Maybin. He is a role model that people should look up to. He dealt with some personal issues in football and out of football by being labeled as a burst to losing a child. To escape from problems, he draws. He doesn’t cause issues and I think doesn’t want to be a part of any problems unless it involves hitting the quarterback.

Also, Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard are the best safeties in the league. I mean, they would never let a rookie catch a touchdown pass; cough cough, Troy Polamalu.

But one thing I want to tell everyone, including New England Patriot fans: Just because your team won against the Jets before does not mean you guys are the best football team ever and the Jets suck. It means you were better that day. Repeat this in your head a couple of times!

The New York Jets ruled out safety Brodney Pool for the second straight week on Tuesday, two days before the Jets play the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.

“Brodney Pool is out. He had to get a cortisone shot in his knee (for) that swelling and all that stuff. But he’s going to be out this week as well,” said Jets coach Rex Ryan.

A long list of Jets joined Pool on the sidelines for Tuesday’s practice, headlined by running back LaDainian Tomlinson (knee). Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (knee), tight end Shawn Nelson (illness) and wide receiver Patrick Turner (kidney) also missed the session.

Ryan said he expects Tomlinson, Kerley and Turner will all be game-time decisions.

“It being on a short week, is it good for a running back and all that?” said in regards to Tomlinson’s MCL sprain. “Probably not, but I never want to hold it against him because I think I know the kind of competitor (Tomlinson) is. If he thinks he can help the team, he’s going to go.”

Cornerback Darelle Revis (knee) was limited in practice, but Ryan was not worried about his defensive star.

“Darrelle Revis was limited today. He had a knee. Don’t worry, he’s playing. I’m not even going to make the trip if Darrelle doesn’t go,” quipped Ryan.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Tom Brady‘s late touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski gave the New England Patriots a 13-9 halftime lead over the New York Jets on Sunday night in an AFC East showdown.

With Buffalo losing earlier in the day, the winner will have sole possession of the top spot in the AFC East. All three teams entered Sunday at 5-3, with the Jets having won three in a row and the Patriots dropping their past two.

New York also is undefeated at home in four games.

The second quarter was filled with mistakes by both offenses, along with some pretty staunch defense, something the Patriots have not been known for this season. They had three sacks in the half, two by veteran Andre Carter.

But the Jets got points out of one of their rare pressures on Brady. Linebacker Jamaal Westerman got to Brady in the end zone and the reigning league MVP threw the ball away left-handed. Brady was called for grounding and a safety.

New York took the free kick and moved 65 yards on seven plays, including a 21-yard run by LaDainian Tomlinson and the first catch of the season by Patrick Turner, good for 22 yards. Mark Sanchez ran in from the 2 on a quarterback draw for a 9-6 lead.

Back came the Patriots after New York opted not to try a pooch kickoff following a 15-yard penalty on New England‘s Vince Wilfork, and Nick Folk kicked the ball through the end zone. Brady hit five passes on an 80-yard drive, with Gronkowski getting open over the middle for the 18-yard score with 9 seconds left in the half.

New England lost top cornerback Devin McCourty midway in the second quarter after he collided with teammate Sterling Moore. He walked to the sideline appearing dazed and holding his right shoulder stiffly against his body. McCourty then went to the locker room.

Jets coach Rex Ryan called the prime-time meeting “a great opportunity.” His team did not seize it in the opening 15 minutes, but did better after that, only to trail after two quarters.

Stephen Gostkowski kicked a pair of field goals and New England’s maligned defense came up with two sacks by Carter for a 6-0 edge after one quarter.

Ignoring their ground-and-pound philosophy, the Jets went to the air on the first series, and completions of 16 and 27 yards to Santonio Holmes helped them get deep in New England territory. But they couldn’t score from the 9 and Folk missed a 24-yard field goal to the left.

An ominous sign against the Patriots, and Brady went right to work. Completions of 12 yards to Aaron Hernandez, 21 to Gronkowski — Brady loves those tight ends — and 12 to Chad Ochocinco got them in field goal range. Gostkowski did what Folk couldn’t, squeezing his 50-yarder just over the crossbar for a 3-0 lead.

Ochocinco’s catch was his first in a month; his last was against the Jets on Oct. 9 in a Patriots victory.

Sanchez overthrew a wide-open Dustin Keller on the next Jets possession, then was sacked by Carter, forcing a punt and quieting the crowd. The fans were nearly silent when Ochocinco broke free behind star cornerback Darrelle Revis — the Jets appeared confused in their alignment — and gained 53 yards on a throw from Brady.

Again, the Patriots stalled and Gostkowski made it 6-0 with a 36-yarder.

Carter got his second sack on the final play of the first period.

For star power, the Patriots went with Jon Bon Jovi as the team’s guest, while the Jets welcomed Donald Trump.

It is confirmed. Former Buffalo Bills tight end, Shawn Nelson(notes), signed with the New York Jets on October 31, 2011. This is just one of several changes to New York's roster this week.

It is confirmed. Former Buffalo Bills tight end, Shawn Nelson(notes), signed with the New York Jets on October 31, 2011. This is just one of several changes to New York’s roster this week. Signing Nelson does not do much to boost Gang Green’s offense.

Shawn Nelson

The six foot, five inch, 240 pound tight end, Shawn Nelson, joined the NFL in 2009 as a fourth-round pick for the Bills. He played for Buffalo during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. On September 3, 2011, the Bills waived him. Nelson worked out with the New England Patriots before coming to New York. Shawn Nelson has a total of 20 career catches for 181 yards. Nelson was under suspension for the first four games of the 2011 season for violations of the NFL drug policy. The New York Jets website confirmed Nelson is joining the team.

While Nelson’s on field performance is acceptable, it is not great. He comes with a lot of baggage. It is unclear to this Jet’s fan why Gang Green needs another tight end when they already have Dustin Keller(notes), Matthew Mulligan(notes) and Josh Baker(notes) listed at that position. What New York really needs is a backup center. Taylor Boggs(notes) is listed on injured reserved and they just cut Colin Baxter(notes). No chance of getting Baxter off of waivers, he signed with the San Diego Chargers.

Shawn Nelson gives New York good depth at the tight end position. As a number three or four tight end he is perfectly acceptable. The Jets have good depth in the wide receiver, running back and tight end positions. Under normal circumstances this would be more than enough for quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) to capitalize on. However, Gang Green’s offensive line is seriously lacking in the depth department. It has yet to be determined if the line can give Sanchez the protection he needs. Game 7 showed glimmers of hope, but it remains to be seen if they are consistent or not.

Did the Jets pick up a valuable player or is Shawn Nelson a problem child. Rex Ryan seems to love the challenges the “bad boys” bring. This fan is not sure that taking on a potential time bomb is what Gang Green needs at this point in the season.

The New York Jets beat the San Diego Chargers in a Sunday afternoon battle on October 23, 2011. This win gives New York the distinction of being undefeated at home this season. The final score was 27-21.

Plax is back

Concerns over the chemistry between quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) and wideout Plaxico Burress(notes) have been laid to rest—at least as far as the red zone goes. Burress caught four passes during the game—three were for touchdowns. Looks like Plaxico has finally found his groove.

Revis island

Once again, Darrelle Revis(notes) comes up with a huge interception and runs it back for 64-yards. Gang Green was able to score on this drive. The interception by Darrelle Revis broke Philip Rivers’(notes) 100 game record without an interception in the fourth quarter. This game the Jets came up with two interceptions in the fourth quarter. The first one was by Darrelle Revis and the second interception was by Kyle Wilson(notes).

What changed

I noticed major changes with the way the Jets played this afternoon. The biggest change is that Mark Sanchez is starting to get the protection he needs in order to make the passing game work. Sanchez seems to be more composed in the pocket. The touchdown receptions to Burress were huge. When forced out of the pocket, Mark Sanchez showed that he is able to get rid of the ball without taking a sack. Sanchez had a 25-yard run to keep a scoring drive alive.

Gang Green’s defense seemed to gel into a cohesive unit. They were making plays and unlike prior games, they were able to stop the run. Pressure was kept on Philip Rivers throughout the game. New York’s defense seemed to be in high gear for the second half of the game.

The Jets were clearly the underdog against the 4 and 1 Chargers coming into this game. San Diego was supposed to completely dominate New York. Instead, the Jets came out swinging and were able to pull out a win.

New York Jets All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis made an appearance today on WFAN with radio personality Mike Francessa. During the interview, the topic of a specific play from last week’s game against the Miami Dolphins came up and the interview quickly turned awkward.

After some jawing back and forth over whether or not the play was actually a penalty, a member of the Jets public relations staff interrupted the call and then told Revis to hang up.

Here is the video (fireworks really start flying at 4:00)…

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.— Miami Dolphins players and coaches said they spent their bye week addressing the many issues that helped cause their 0-4 start.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—

Miami Dolphins players and coaches said they spent their bye week addressing the many issues that helped cause their 0-4 start. They said they worked on the problems in the red zone, the third-down inefficiency, the defensive breakdowns against the pass.

“We’ve identified some of the things that we hadn’t done well and spent a lot of time [on them],” Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said last week. “There will be no excuses that way … We need to go out there and do it now.”

Sparano was anxious on Monday night to see how much progress his team had made. A primetime, nationally-televised game against the Jets here at MetLife Stadium provided the Dolphins the perfect stage to prove they were better than their record indicated.

But by the end of the Dolphins’ 24-6 defeat, it was clear they hadn’t progressed during their time off. And it’s becoming more and more clear that this team isn’t better than its record. In fact, 0-5, the Dolphins’ worst start since losing 13 consecutive on the way to a 1-15 finish in 2007, sounds about right.

The reasons for this defeat were the same as the reasons for the others. There was ineptitude in the red zone, where the Dolphins twice drove inside the Jets’ 5-yard line only to settle for field goals.

Another trip inside the Jets’ 20 ended with quarterback Matt Moore, making his first start in place of the injured Chad Henne, throwing an interception to Darrelle Revis, who made the play near the goal line. He returned it 100 yards for a touchdown that put the Jets ahead 7-3 with 5:52 left in the first quarter.

There was third-down inefficiency. The Dolphins, who entered ranked last in the NFL on third down, failed in the first to convert any of their six third downs. They didn’t convert a third down until the third quarter.

There were defensive lapses, too. The Jets gained just 100 yards during the first half, but 81 of those came on their final drive before halftime. That drive spanned 11 plays and ended with Mark Sanchez’s 5-yard touchdown run up the middle, where he ran in unscathed.

Earlier on the drive, Sanchez passed for a 27-yard gain to Dustin Keller and a 20-yard gain to Santonio Holmes. Both players had little difficulty finding open space in the Dolphins’ defense.

And, again, there was also a dropped touchdown pass from Brandon Marshall. He gained 46 yards on one reception late in the first quarter and then appeared to lose his balance before running out of bounds.

Then, later in the drive, Marshall let a 3-yard touchdown pass sail through his hands. That represented the fourth time in five games that Marshall has allowed a touchdown pass to bounce off his hands in the end zone.

Even the good news for the Dolphins came with some bad. Like this: The Dolphins outgained the Jets 215 yards to 100 yards in the first half, yet still trailed 14-6.

And this: Reggie Bush, who entered the game averaging 3 yards per carry, finally got going and gained 71 yards on 10 carries. But he fumbled twice – the Dolphins recovered both – and left the game in the third quarter with a neck injury.

After the Jets’ final touchdown, a 38-yard pass from Sanchez to Holmes that came on a 3rd-and-10, a good number of a crowd of about 78,000 began to leave. There were still nearly 12 minutes to play but the ending wasn’t in doubt – and maybe never was given the Dolphins’ failure to fix their wrongs.

East Rutherford, N.J. • Surrounded by turmoil and controversy, the Jets sorely needed something to finally feel good about

East Rutherford, N.J. • Surrounded by turmoil and controversy, the Jets sorely needed something to finally feel good about.

Enter the winless Dolphins at MetLife Stadium Monday night.

The Jets overcame another sluggish start and found a way to ignite their offense after four consecutive three-and-outs to start the game. They rode Mark Sanchez’s touchdown run and touchdown pass and Darrelle Revis’ 100-yard interception return for a score, ending their losing streak at three games with a nondescript 24-6 victory over Miami.

“We needed to win in the worst way,” Rex Ryan said, “and I’m just happy to get one.”

Sanchez completed 14 of 25 passes for 201 yards, and Shonn Greene gained 74 yards on 21 carries. Matt Moore completed 16 of 34 for 204 yards. He was sacked four times and threw two interceptions, both by Revis.

Speaking of Revis’ pick-6, Ryan said: “Anytime you can get a red-zone interception and turn it into points, that’s huge.”

Said LaDainian Tomlinson, “It boosted our confidence. But at the same time it made everybody relax.”

Sanchez ran for a 5-yard touchdown and threw a TD pass to Santonio Holmes. The wide receiver, who made headlines by calling out the offensive line for the second straight week, scored on a nifty 38-yard catch-and-run with 11:50 left. That gave the Jets an 18-point bulge and essentially put this one away.

Holmes served as a ceremonial captain during the coin toss, with Ryan sending him out there with guard Brandon Moore, the guy who was critical of Holmes for comments he thought were divisive and were fracturing the locker room.

It was a typical ploy by Ryan, looking to bring the team together during tumultuous times. But initially, it didn’t seem to do much to get a rise out of the Jets (3-3). They gained only 14 yards in their first four possessions. Miami (0-5) rolled up 173 yards of first-quarter offense compared to 10 for the Jets, who didn’t get a first down until 6:17 remained in the half.

The Jets’ offense finally got into a bit of a rhythm on its fifth and final possession of the half. Sanchez, who had been off-target with his throws and reads, finally found that stride he had been looking for. He completed four straight passes for 70 yards to set up his rushing score.

Staring at a third-and-4 from Miami’s 5, Sanchez took three steps back and perfectly executed the quarterback draw. His headfirst dive into the end zone capped an 11-play, 81-yard drive to give the Jets a 14-6 halftime lead.

“That was huge,” Sanchez said. “I was just telling guys on the sideline to ‘stay with it, just keep fighting and we’re going to blow this thing open I promise. We’ll get the running game going, we’ll get this thing rolling, I promise.’ And we did it. They answered it. It was great.”

Ryan tried to help get his sputtering offense in gear early. The Jets won the toss and elected to receive rather than defer, which they did only twice before under Ryan. But the Jets went three-and-out on their first drive, a common refrain of late.

Miami started its second possession at the Jets’ 47 after T.J. Conley’s 48-yard punt and Reggie Bush’s 6-yard return. But Moore’s pass for Brandon Marshall on third-and-goal from the 5 fell incomplete — Revis was covering — and the Dolphins settled for Dan Carpenter’s 28-yard field goal.

The Dolphins had a real chance to pounce on the Jets on the ensuing kickoff. The ball bounced at the 7, way short of return man Joe McKnight, and hit linebacker Garrett McIntyre in the right knee. Austin Spitzer recovered at the Jets’ 19, giving Miami a golden opportunity. But Revis came up with a play that quickly turned a potentially ugly situation into a special one.

NFL

Jets 24, Dolphins 6

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Darrelle Revis ran back an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and the New York Jets did just enough to beat the Miami Dolphins 24-6 on Monday night and end a three-game losing streak.

Mark Sanchez threw a touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and ran for another score as Rex Ryan’s Jets — who called this a “must-win” game — capped a tough week by pulling out a victory and sending the winless Dolphins to their fifth straight loss.

With the losses mounting and the season already on the brink of spinning out of control for the Jets (3-3), they had to deal with some infighting as Holmes called out the offensive line for not protecting Sanchez. Right guard Brandon Moore fired back, saying those comments could have a “fragmenting effect.”

In developments

Injury update: It was a rough weekend for quarterbacks — and coaches.

Jason Campbell of the Raiders is out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, Sam Bradford of the Rams is questionable with a high left ankle sprain and Matt Schaub of the Texans has a chest bruise but isn’t likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Titans.

The coaching ranks were hit, too. New Orleans coach Sean Payton had surgery to repair a torn meniscus and fractured bone in his left leg on Monday, a day after one of his players was tackled into him on the sideline. And Tampa Bay defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake injured his left knee on the sideline while celebrating Tanard Jackson’s interception during the Buccaneers’ win over Payton’s team.

Oakland contacted former Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard, but Garrard’s agent confirmed the quarterback will need back surgery and will likely not play this year.

Campbell, who had surgery Monday, was replaced by Kyle Boller, who struggled in his first action of the season. The only other quarterback on Oakland’s roster is rookie Terrelle Pryor, who was officially activated Monday after a five-game suspension.

Bradford is in a walking boot, and A.J. Feeley is likely to take most of the snaps when the winless Rams resume practice Wednesday. Bradford’s status for Sunday’s game at Dallas is in question.

Schaub underwent an MRI exam Monday, and Texans coach Gary Kubiak said his QB is “just beat up,” will probably sit out Wednesday’s practice but “all indications are he’ll be OK.”

As for Payton, the coach was expected to remain in the hospital until today.

No fines in handshake brouhaha: Jim Harbaugh’s aggressive, second-long handshake with Lions coach Jim Schwartz and accompanying back slap have talk radio all atwitter, and Twitter, too. But the league will be taking no action.

Harbaugh spoke to NFL Executive Vice President Ray Anderson and vowed to improve his own postgame behavior. The NFL announced neither coach would be fined for their altercation at the end of the game, won by the Niners, 25-19.

Still, Harbaugh doesn’t plan to say sorry.

“Personally I can get better at the postgame handshake and we’ll attempt to do that,” Harbaugh said.

Broncos trade Lloyd to Rams: Tim Tebow has lost his top target even before making his first start of the season.

The Denver Broncos traded Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Lloyd, the league’s leading receiver last year, to the St. Louis Rams on Monday for a conditional 2012 draft pick.

The move comes a week after Tebow supplanted Kyle Orton at quarterback and six days before Tebow’s first start at Miami.

Bucs in London: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have arrived in London ahead of their NFL game against the Chicago Bears.

The Bucs landed at Heathrow airport around 10 p.m. local time after opting to spend the whole week in the British capital to prepare for Sunday’s game. The Bears are scheduled to arrive in London on Friday.

Gates returns to practice: San Diego Chargers star tight end Antonio Gates returned to practice in a limited role on Monday in hopes of playing against the New York Jets.

Gates has missed the last three games following a flare up in his lengthy bout with plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Gates tore scar tissue near the injury Sept. 18 against New England. He hopes prolonged rest will alleviate the pain that hinders his effectiveness.

Monday was the first step in his return. Gates hopes to practice the rest of the week, but remains cautious about his playing status for Sunday’s road game.

What are your opinions.
