MIAMI – Jason Taylor’s ready to hang it up, while the New York Jets are desperate to keep playing.

Taylor plans to retire after Sunday’s season finale for the Miami Dolphins. They’ll try to send him out with a win against the Jets, who need a victory to keep alive their slim hopes of making the playoffs.

Even if the Jets win, to earn a post-season berth they’ll also need losses Sunday by Cincinnati, Tennessee and either Denver or Oakland.

“This is the first time I have ever been in a situation like this,” said receiver Plaxico Burress, a 10-year veteran. “If we do get in, great. If things don’t work out, we have nobody to blame but ourselves.”

The Jets (8-7) lost control of their destiny when they were beaten last week by the Giants 29-14. Now the Jets are in danger of missing the playoffs after reaching the AFC championship game each of the past two years, and elimination could come at the hands of the AFC East rival Dolphins (5-10).

“It would be beautiful to ruin their playoff dreams,” Miami defensive end Kendall Langford said. “We’re playing for pride. They’re playing for a playoff spot.”

The teams meet in a regular-season finale for the first time since 2008, when the Dolphins won to clinch their only division title since 2000. That game eliminated the Jets from playoff contention.

This year the Dolphins have been consigned to a spoiler’s role since Halloween, thanks to their 0-7 start. Taylor’s retirement announcement this week provided some additional motivation for the last game.

The NFL’s active sack leader spent 13 of his 15 seasons with Miami, made the Pro Bowl six times and ranks with the greatest players in franchise history.

“His presence will be missed, not only in our locker room, but in this organization,” receiver Brandon Marshall said. “Those guys are once-in-a-lifetime guys. We would love for him to go out with a win.”

Coincidentally, Taylor played last season for the Jets before rejoining the Dolphins.

“He was a great teammate, and we loved having him here,” Jets tight end Dustin Keller said. “But they’re going to want to send him off with a big win, and we can’t let that happen. We know what kind of player he is and what he’s capable of, and we can’t let him disrupt the game.”

Taylor has 16 1/2 of his 139 1/2 sacks against the Jets, although he managed none when the teams met in October. New York won 24-6, and while the Dolphins have been a much better team lately, they’ll be without 1,000-yard rusher Reggie Bush because of a knee injury.

The Dolphins took a 17-point lead at New England last week before losing 27-24, which left them 0-5 in games decided by a field goal or less. The Jets’ loss to the Giants carried even more sting, because it may wind up costing them a playoff berth.

Coach Rex Ryan declared months ago that these Jets are even more talented than the two teams he took to the AFC title game. But New York has given up 74 points while losing the past two games, and the offence was so out of sorts against the Giants that Mark Sanchez was forced to throw a career-high 59 passes. The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in yardage, stirring speculation about offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s job security.

With typical bravado, Ryan insisted the season might yet be salvaged.

“We can do some damage if we get into the playoffs,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that, because I think we play excellent defence, I think we can run the football, and I think that’s what you have to do this time of year.”

But getting to the post-season is now a long shot. Three of the other games that will determine the Jets’ fate are late starts Sunday, which means that if they win, the Jets will likely be flying home when they learn whether their season is over.

“We’re just focused on the things we can control, and that’s trying to play well against Miami and coming up with a win,” Sanchez said. “After that, we’ll see what happens. Hopefully we get a win and on the plane we find out everything worked out in our favour. But all we can control is winning.”

The Dolphins, meanwhile, are bound for another off-season of change. Coach Tony Sparano was fired Dec. 12, and the next coach will be Miami’s seventh since the start of 2004. With a losing record for the third consecutive year — the Dolphins’ first such stretch since the 1960s — a roster shake-up is likely, too.

Given his team’s situation, the 37-year-old Taylor decided the time was right to call it quits. He’ll do it after playing his 204th game for the Dolphins, more than anyone aside from Dan Marino.

“It’s great to have a chance to walk away in front of your home crowd in a city that means a lot to you against an opponent that you’ve had a tremendous history against,” Taylor said. “I want to win the game, but not so I can say I won my last game. This is not about Jason Taylor and my career. There are guys in the locker-room that are fighting for jobs, fighting for their futures, auditioning for their next jobs. So I’m just a small piece of this team train. I’m going to do my part Sunday to help win.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—Mark Sanchez has been knocked around all season,
battered by defensive linemen on the field and by critical fans and media
members off it.

It has been one trying year for the embattled New York Jets quarterback.
And, he acknowledges, he has brought a lot of it on himself. But he wants those
who criticize him to know this: You’re not going to drag him down.

“Win, lose or draw, I’m the luckiest guy in the world, I promise,” Sanchez
said Wednesday. “I’m lucky to be here. I’m lucky, fortunate, blessed, whatever
you want to call it. I’m thrilled about this job and about this opportunity this
week.”

Sanchez was referring to the chance he and the Jets (8-7) have to make right
all that has gone wrong this season, and there has been plenty. New York is
heading to play AFC East rival Miami (5-10) needing to win and also get plenty
of help from other teams to have a chance at a third straight playoff trip.

The Jets had control of their postseason hopes at this time a week ago, but
a miserable performance by Sanchez and his teammates in a 29-14 loss to the
Giants last Saturday took care of all that.

“Look, the game never worked out,” coach Rex Ryan said. “That’s not the
only game we’ve ever lost, but you’ve got to move on from it. You’ve got a
challenge right in front of you. We have an opportunity. The facts are this: I
know for sure that if we don’t win, we’re not in, so we better win, and we’ll
see what happens. We’ll do whatever it takes, light candles, we’ll do it all.”

But it could all come down to the play of Sanchez, who threw a career-high
59 passes last week—something Ryan says “there is no way” the Jets will do
again. It was much more than that, though: Sanchez threw two interceptions
against the Giants, lost a fumble near the goal line and was sacked for a safety
that sealed it.

“Have we played our best? No,” Sanchez said. “But it’s still the best
time I could possibly scheme up in my head. We just have to keep pressing, be
smart, win the game and see what happens.”

Despite two straight losses that have the Jets’ season teetering on the
brink, Sanchez appeared more upbeat than he has in weeks. He was almost sullen
while talking to the media previously.

Not on Wednesday. Sanchez answered every question as if he had snapped out
of a funk, seeming more confident and thick-skinned even while some outside the
team have wondered more than ever if he can lead the Jets to a Super Bowl. Not
only that, fans and media members are debating whether this is as good as
Sanchez will ever be.

He says there’s “no question” that he has “absolutely” improved in his
third season.

“Whether it’s defensive recognition or clock management and stuff like
that, understanding the offense and the system, I’m light years ahead,” he
said.

The numbers actually aren’t all bad. His career-high 24 touchdown passes are
the most since Vinny Testaverde had a franchise-high 29 in 1998. Sanchez is also
on pace to have career highs in completions, completion percentage, quarterback
rating and yards per game. But he also has been sacked a career-high 37 times
and lost eight fumbles, and his decision-making and ability to read defenses
have been questioned.

“I’m not out to prove anything like that to people,” Sanchez said of
whether he’s the quarterback of the future. “I just want to work hard for these
guys on the team. These guys know I’m leading by example, being vocal if I need
to. These are the guys I’m playing for right here in this locker room and in
this building.”

Sanchez has taken lots of the blame for the inadequacies and inconsistencies
of the offense, and so has coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Ryan said it should
ultimately lead back to him, not Schottenheimer or the guy he still deems a
franchise-type quarterback—even if few outside the organization do.

“That kind of stuff happens when you’re not playing as well as you’d like
to,” Sanchez said, “and when your team is not in control of their own destiny
in the playoffs and stuff like that. That’s natural and that’s a part of this
league, so you have to handle that stuff.”

Sanchez believes he “absolutely, no question” has the support of everyone
in his locker room. Players such as Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold and tight end
Dustin Keller say they are impressed by how Sanchez has dealt with the
criticism, and insist it’s not all his fault. They say the line could block and
protect better, the running backs could churn out more yards and the receivers
could run better routes.

“He works hard, things haven’t gone particularly well for him or us, but he
comes in and works hard every day,” wide receiver Plaxico Burress said.
“There’s no doubt about it that he’s going to get better.”

Sanchez believes he can start in that direction Sunday in Miami with the
season on the line.

“I don’t think we’ve hit our potential this year, that’s for sure,” he
said, “but that doesn’t mean that we can’t accomplish a lot of the goals that
we set out to accomplish. We have a chance.”

Notes: LB Garrett McIntyre has a sprained knee and didn’t practice. His
availability for Sunday’s game was uncertain. … Ryan said LB Ricky Sapp would
be promoted from the practice squad to fill the spot vacated when the Jets
waived WR Eron Riley on Tuesday.

According to a Yahoo! Sports report, the Christmas Eve clash between the New York Giants and New York Jets actually matters for a change. “For all the history of these teams – the Jets have Joe Namath and Super Bowl III while the Giants have Lawrence Taylor, the David Tyree catch and three titles – none of it intersects,” says the author of the article, Jason Cole. But of the 11 times the teams played during the regular season over the past 42 years, five were highly entertaining and significant. Here’s a look back at the top five games in the Giants-Jets rivalry.

1) Nov. 1, 1981

The Giants and Jets were both in the midst of the playoff race by the midway point of the season, and the early November matchup between the squads would determine who was the top team in New York in the 1981 season. The Jets, featuring legendary Sack Exchange players Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam, sacked Giants quarterback Phil Simms nine times and held their offense to just seven points. The Jets came away with a 26-7 win.

2) Dec. 18, 1988

The teams squared off in the season finale of the 1988 season, with the Jets coming away with a 27-21 victory to knock the 10-6 Giants out of the playoff race. The Jets, who finished 8-7-1, were already eliminated from the postseason, but they showed plenty of heart in the affair. The Jets held a 20-7 lead in the third quarter, but Phil Simms hit Stephen Baker and Lionel Manuel for touchdown passes to give the Giants a 21-20 advantage. But with time winding down, Jets wide receiver Al Toon caught a touchdown pass to seal the victory for the Jets and end the Giants’ playoff hopes.

3) Nov. 2, 2003

The Giants would win their third straight game against the Jets in a wildly entertaining overtime affair on Nov. 2, 2003. New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington pushed the pace of the offense and led a late comeback charge, tying the game at 28-all in the waning minutes of regulation time. But Giants kicker Brett Conway booted a field game with four seconds left in overtime to earn a 31-28 victory for his team.

4) Oct. 7, 2007

The last time the Giants played the Jets in the regular season was in the 2007-08 season, the year they won the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots. The Giants would ultimately win their fourth consecutive game over the Jets in thrilling, come-from-behind fashion. The Giants found themselves behind, 24-14, but Eli Manning connected on touchdown passes to wide receivers Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Burress to put his team back on top. Aaron Ross then sealed the victory with a game-changing interception, ultimately helping the Giants come out on top, 35-24.

5) Nov. 10, 1974

The Jets earned a 26-20 win over the Giants for their first ever regular-season overtime victory. It was also the first time any regular-season NFL game ended with an overtime win, as this was the year that the league instituted overtime to non-playoff games. It was a back-and-forth affair, with the Jets tying the game in the fourth quarter on a quarterback sneak from Joe Namath. In the overtime period, Namath connected with Emerson Boozer to seal the win for the Jets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Andy Reid and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles are
hoping the team they just whipped helps them out in a big way.

The Eagles (6-8) are still in the playoff hunt in a mediocre NFC East
following a 45-19 rout over the New York Jets on Sunday. Now they’ll need those
same Jets (8-6) to beat the New York Giants (7-7) on Saturday to keep them in
contention.

“I’m a big Jets fan this week,” Reid said Monday.

So is everyone else in Philly.

The Jets-Giants game should be over before the Eagles kick off against
division-leading Dallas (8-6) on Christmas Eve. So, there will be plenty of
scoreboard watching during pregame warmups.

“You control what you control,” Reid said. “You have to play the game
whether that team wins or loses.”

For the Eagles to repeat as NFC East champions, they must beat the Cowboys
on the road and defeat Washington at home on Jan. 1. They need the Giants to
lose to the Jets and then beat Dallas in their last game.

If all four scenarios work out Philadelphia’s way, the Eagles would win the
division in a three-way tie at 8-8 because they would have the best record in
the East at 5-1.

“It feels good that we are still alive,” tight end Brent Celek said.
“That is all you can ask for at this point. We are not where we wanted to be at
the beginning of the season, but we are doing all we can do with what we have.
We just have to play together as a team and go up there, fight and beat
Dallas.”

The Eagles weren’t supposed to be in a position where they had to scratch
and claw and hope to make the playoffs. Many experts picked them to contend for
the Super Bowl this season after an offseason spending spree brought several
star players to Philadelphia, joining an already strong core that included
Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson. Even management declared this an
all-or-nothing year.

But a 1-4 start doomed the Eagles and they’ve failed miserably to live up to
those enormous expectations. Consecutive lopsided losses to New England and
Seattle dropped the Eagles to 4-8 and seemingly ended their playoff chances.
Fans were calling for Reid to be fired, and for offensive line
coach-turned-defensive coordinator Juan Castillo to go with him.

Now it appears both Reid and Castillo have secured themselves another
season. Players have rallied around Castillo, saying they have more confidence
in his schemes and calls. The results support that. The defense has shown vast
improvement recently, holding both Miami and the Jets to under 250 total yards
and getting 13 sacks.

“You have to understand that we really didn’t have training camp,”
Castillo said. “And I think initially I started too fast and what I found out
is I had to go backwards with some of those guys because they had missed some of
that and we were making some mistakes just on fundamental stuff. You know, now
as we understand all of our packages, we’re able to add as we keep going. And
there is still a lot to add, but the first thing we have to understand is how to
handle our fundamental packages.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have to stay alive by upsetting the New York Jets on Dec. 18.

The Philadelphia Eagles have to stay alive by upsetting the New York Jets on Dec. 18. But Eagles fans like myself have to be discouraged, since they are catching the Jets in the middle of their latest late-season surge. What’s more, New York is already familiar with the NFC East and could clinch a postseason berth by having a perfect record in that division.

The Jets are 2-0 against NFC East competition and will now face the Eagles and New York Giants in consecutive weeks. If the Jets sweep the NFC East, they will be 10-5 and should pretty much be locked in for the sixth seed in the AFC playoffs. Given the state of this division, it would make sense if it went 0-4 against a second place AFC East squad that is probably a more ideal division champion than the Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles.

The Jets really got the ball rolling in making the NFC East pathetic in Week 1. If they had not rallied against the Cowboys on Sept. 11, perhaps Dallas would have rode the momentum and not blown so many more late leads the rest of the season. If that had happened, then the Cowboys would have likely won the division by now and would just be playing for a bye. But instead, New York let Dallas shoot itself like it has in half of the 13 weeks after that.

The Jets really needed that break, considering how tough things have gotten for them afterwards. Despite being 8-5, New York could easily be out of the playoff hunt altogether thanks to their inconsistency. That is why the Jets are fortunate to feed on the NFC East, as it did against the clutch-free Cowboys and against the flailing Washington Redskins on Dec. 4. Now if they can feed on the equally flailing Eagles this week and the even more inconsistent Giants on Dec. 24, it should all but secure another playoff berth.

Normally, sweeping the NFC East would be unlikely for anyone but an elite team. However, the Jets are still not elite quite yet and this division hasn’t been this far away from elite in a long time. The Cowboys, Giants, Eagles and Redskins have all forfeited chances to take control of the East this year – which probably makes the Jets all the sadder that they can’t transfer divisions. After all, they could probably win this East division in a walk and it would get them away from the New England Patriots at long last.

Of course, if the Jets slip up against the Eagles and/or Giants, it would speak to how they are as disappointing as their NFC East “brethren.” But eventually, some Eastern division team other than the Patriots is going to have to prove that they can be a real contender this season. Since the NFC East seems uninterested in filling that void, the Jets will just have to sweep that division, reach the playoffs and make another miracle postseason run themselves.

The Philadelphia Eagles are clinging to hope against hope for an NFC East title. But those of us Eagles fans still hoping for the playoffs could have their hopes destroyed even before Philadelphia faces the New York Jets on Dec.

The Philadelphia Eagles are clinging to hope against hope for an NFC East title. But those of us Eagles fans still hoping for the playoffs could have their hopes destroyed even before Philadelphia faces the New York Jets on Dec. 18. The New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys both need to win before then to eliminate Philadelphia – and the Cowboys seem to have been dealt a break for their game on Dec. 17.

This has been a pretty rough time for Dallas after it blew its NFC East lead with two straight late, bitter defeats. Now the Giants are setting the pace in the division again, as the Cowboys will have to beat them on the road in the last week of the season to take the title. But if Dallas doesn’t stabilize itself soon and recover from their recent slump, the race could be over by then.

That makes it all the more fortunate for the Cowboys to just face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Dec. 17. Unlike Dallas’s last few opponents, Tampa Bay isn’t a playoff contender or a losing team that is starting to win again when it is too late for them. Instead, the Buccaneers are coming off a horrendous blowout loss on Dec. 11 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, of all teams, and are working on a seven-game losing streak.

Sadly, this is the club that the Eagles and Giants have to rely on to knock the Cowboys down even further. At this point, it seems that the only way the Buccaneers can win is if the opposition shoots itself in both foots. Fortunately, the Cowboys are experts at that, which is why they are 7-6 instead of 10-3 or 11-2 like they probably should be. Since Dallas keeps giving the rest of the NFC East new life, slipping up here and going deeper into a tailspin wouldn’t be out of character.

There is precedent for Tampa Bay to bail Philadelphia out, as it did in 2008 by losing its last game of the season to the then-lowly Oakland Raiders. With that improbable upset, the Eagles had an opening to clinch an even more improbable playoff berth – after throttling the Cowboys, of course. So maybe the Buccaneers can help the Eagles in another way by upsetting the Cowboys and keeping Philadelphia alive for at least one more week.

Of course, even if Tampa Bay upsets Dallas, New York would still need to lose to the 4-9 Washington Redskins on Dec. 18 to really help out – and then the Eagles still have to beat the New York Jets. A lot of unlikely dominos have to fall for Philadelphia this weekend, yet the most unlikely one is the first one where the Buccaneers upset the Cowboys. But if that actually happens, maybe the rest will fall into place the next day.

From Florham Park, N.J. — For the past couple of years, we have heard a lot from the bombastic New York Jets about what they are and what they're capable of doing.

From Florham Park, N.J. — For the past couple of years, we have heard a lot from the bombastic New York Jets about what they are and what they’re capable of doing.

On Thursday, the loudest voice in the locker room disclosed what the Jets are not.

“I don’t think we’re a Super Bowl team,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “Right now, we’re not even a playoff team.”

That might sound like blasphemy in Rex Ryan country, where the Lombardi Trophy isn’t just mentioned but is promised — “I guarantee we’ll win it this year,” the coach said at the scouting combine in February — yet these Jets have had a bit of the edge knocked off them this season.

Still, they control their destiny. If they run the table in these final three weeks, they will secure at least the No. 6 seed in the AFC. That will require some strong play from their No. 6, quarterback Mark Sanchez, and knocking off Philadelphia, the New York Giants, and Miami.

The Jets (8-5) are perfectly capable of doing that, seeing as they typically have gotten better at the end of the season under Ryan, the Giants could have their playoff spot locked up when they play the Jets, and the Dolphins won’t be overflowing with incentive in their finale.

But the real measuring stick for the Jets will be Sunday’s game against the Eagles, a team similarly loaded with talent and likewise capable of laying an egg. Philadelphia should have banged-up Michael Vick and receiver Jeremy Maclin in the lineup, is coming off its most complete defensive effort of the season (a 26-10 victory at Miami), and has a wisp of hope of winning the NFC East (the Eagles must go 3-0; Cowboys and Giants 1-2 or worse).

As pleased as the Jets are that they’re riding a three-game winning streak, they know that those triumphs came against downward-spiraling Buffalo, Washington with Rex Grossman and Kansas City with Tyler Palko.

Vick and the Eagles should be a real test, a way for the Jets to determine whether they truly belong in the upper echelon of teams, or if all those championship promises were just more hype by the Hudson.

This much we know: In each of their first two years under Ryan, the Jets surged at the end of the season and made it to the AFC championship game despite never playing host to a postseason contest. The Jets are loaded with experienced players who have come within one step of the NFL’s biggest stage.

“I think there’s benefit of going through the playoffs and gaining that experience,” Ryan said. “Well, no team has won more playoff games than the New York Jets have over a two-year period — not Green Bay, not anybody — so that’s going to help us. We have to get there first, obviously, but that could make us dangerous.

“The fact that we’re the No. 1 red-zone scoring team in the league. The fact that we’re built to win games in December and January with the way we attack people offensively.… And then our defense, we’re starting to hit our stride.”

Some of the Jets’ biggest talkers have been more muted in recent weeks as the team has struggled to regain its equilibrium after the one-two punch of losses to New England and Denver over a five-day stretch in mid-November. The Denver loss was particularly deflating because the Jets played 55 minutes of outstanding defense, only to lose down the stretch when Tim Tebow directed a 95-yard scoring drive to steal the victory for the Broncos.

Two weeks later, Jets guard Matt Slauson confided: “There was a point after the Denver game there where it did seem like the panic button had been pressed a little bit.”

So far, pushing that button has worked. Clearly, the Jets recognize the urgency of the situation and that they have the potential to do some damage in the playoffs with the way the AFC appears to be so wide open.

Denver leads the AFC West, and no one knows how far the Broncos can go without a consistent passing attack. Houston, which won the AFC South, has a rookie quarterback in T.J. Yates who’s largely untested. New England has Tom Brady and a dazzling record of success, but also the league’s last-ranked defense. Ben Roethlisberger is dealing with a bum left ankle, and Pittsburgh might have to start Charlie Batch in San Francisco on Monday.

As it stands, Baltimore looks like the most complete team in the conference, and the Ravens stomped the Jets in Week 4, 34-17, scoring three touchdowns off Sanchez turnovers. The Jets didn’t have Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold in that game, so that played a part in their inability to handle the Ravens’ rush.

In his first year as Jets coach, Ryan mistakenly thought his team was eliminated from the playoffs after a home loss to Atlanta in December 2009. He was barbecued for that in New York, considering the Jets were not only still alive but also went on to reach the postseason.

This time, it’s some of his players who are managing their expectations, making sure they don’t get too far ahead of themselves.

“We’re still trying to play our best football,” Scott said. “We’re still trying to play completely as a team.… You just don’t wake up and say, ‘We’re a Super Bowl team.’”

Coming from the chest-thumping Jets, that’s growth.

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. / AP Sports Writer Saturday November 12, 2011 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. / AP Sports Writer

Saturday November 12, 2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Rex Ryan challenged the rest of the NFL during training camp, asking if there were any teams other than his New York Jets good enough to beat the New England Patriots.

Well, Buffalo answered the call in Week 3. Pittsburgh and the Giants did, too, in the last two weeks. Now it’s the time for the Jets to back up their brash coach’s big words.

“The two years I’ve been here, obviously New England has won the division both times,” Ryan said. “They’ve beat us already. So, we know what this game represents. We’re not afraid to talk about it. It’s not one of these, ‘Well, if we don’t, there’s still a lot of season left.’ We’re approaching it like we have to have this game.”

The suddenly soaring Jets (5-3) take on the struggling Patriots (5-3) in a showdown for first place in the AFC East on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. The winner will have at least a share of the top spot, with Buffalo (5-3) taking on Dallas earlier that day.

“We want to win our division,” Ryan said. “We think it goes through New England. That old saying, ‘To be the champ, you have to beat the champ.’ And they’re sitting right in front of us. I respect the job that Pittsburgh and the Giants and Buffalo did in defeating New England. That’s no easy task. And right now, we’re going to say we think we’ve improved as a football team, and

we’re going to find out on Sunday, because this is a measuring stick right here.”

That’s how most teams approach playing Bill Belichick’s Patriots, given their consistent winning ways during the last decade. But, Ryan’s No. 1 charge when he took over as the Jets coach was to knock the Patriots off their pedestal. New York has made it to the AFC championship the past two seasons, but has done it the hard way by playing all of its postseason games on the road. Winning the division is the only way to guarantee to have at least one home game, and this one could go a long way to determining who’ll be hitting the road when the playoffs start.

“This is right where we want to be,” quarterback Mark Sanchez said, “and there’s no better team that we’d want to play than a division rival and a divisional opponent, for a game that looks to set us up real nice in the division if we win.”

The last time these teams met back on Oct. 9, the Jets were sent to their third straight loss and appeared to be in disarray. Meanwhile, the Patriots were cruising along with a high-powered offense behind Tom Brady.

Funny how things change in just a few weeks.

New York has won three in a row, beating Miami, San Diego and Buffalo along the way. New England has lost two straight and is in danger of its first three-game skid since 2002, when the Patriots lost four straight, finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs.

“No doubts around here, and that’s me being honest,” wide receiver Deion Branch said. “We see in the film what we’re doing wrong.”

So did the Bills, Steelers and Giants, who were all able to come up with game plans that worked — and won. It’s a simple but not easily executed formula: Put pressure on Brady, take away the edge and shut down the running game and let the defense — ranked 32nd in the league — make its mistakes, especially in the shaky secondary.

“They’re not invincible,” safety Jim Leonhard said. “They’re a great football team, but they’ve got beat by some pretty good teams, as well. I don’t think they’re going to panic up in New England, and we’re not going to feel sorry for them, either.”

Beginning with the last meeting, the Jets have gone back to their run-first “Ground-and-Pound” approach on offense, and having Nick Mangold back from a badly sprained ankle has certainly helped. So has the defense, which is starting to show signs of dominance again with forced turnovers, quarterback pressures and confusing offenses.

“They’re a tough team to prepare for,” Brady said. “They’ve got a lot of stuff, they’ve got a lot of really good players, good scheme. They play well at home. It’s a great challenge.”

Brady is having another typically good season, but his interceptions are unusually high. After throwing four all last season, he’s got 10 this year — including four in his last three games.

“Just decision making,” Brady said. “I’ve just got to make better decisions.”

And that won’t be easy, especially with a secondary led by Darrelle Revis, who’s off to another All-Pro-caliber season with four interceptions. Brady has a 15-5 record against the Jets, including the playoffs, but is 3-3 in the last six with 10 touchdowns and five INTs.

“The guy is a tremendous quarterback, clearly,” said Ryan, refusing to say Brady looks vulnerable. “Without Peyton (Manning) playing, I’d say he’s the best quarterback in the league right now.”

After all, the Jets know better than to get too overconfident against Brady and the Patriots. Not in a rivalry that has been so intense and evenly played lately — the series is tied at 52-52-1. The teams have alternated wins and losses during the last six games, starting with the Jets’ season-opening win in 2009 and including New York’s 28-21 playoff victory last season.

“Oh, it’s fantastic,” Mangold said. “The New York-Boston rivalry, it spans across different sports. We’ve been going back and forth since my time coming in. We’ve had some great games and that’s what makes sports awesome when you get rivalries going. It makes for exciting football.”

Especially when the foes are so familiar and played each other only a month ago.

“It’s one of those deals,” Belichick said, “where they know that we know that we know that they know that we know.”

Got it?

“I said it right after we played them that they were the better team then,” Ryan said. “We’ll see who the better team is now.”

Role reversal for soaring Jets, struggling Pats

By Dennis Waszak Jr. / Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Rex Ryan challenged the rest of the NFL during training camp, asking if there were any teams other than his New York Jets good enough to beat the New England Patriots.

It’s not one of these, “Well, if we don’t, there’s still a lot of season left.’ We’re approaching it like we have to have this game.”

That old saying, “To be the champ, you have to beat the champ.’ And they’re sitting right in front of us. I respect the job that Pittsburgh and the Giants and Buffalo did in defeating New England. That’s no easy task. And right now, we’re going to say we think we’ve improved as a football team, and we’re going to find out on Sunday, because this is a measuring stick right here.”

Make no mistake about it, the New York Jets (5-3) need to win more so than the New England Patriots (5-3) when the AFC East powers face off at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Forget that New York knocked New England out of the playoffs last season, that it has advanced to two straight AFC Championship games and done so by winning four playoff games on the road. Those are admirable accomplishments, but still just accomplishments of the past. This is about the now.

Head coach Rex Ryan and quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) have proven themselves worthy adversaries of their Patriots counterparts, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady(notes), but after suffering a 30-21 loss to New England in Week 5, the Jets’ chances of winning their division in 2011 will take a huge hit should they fall short this weekend.

The Jets, Patriots and Buffalo Bills (5-3) are tied atop the AFC East entering Week 10. New York bullied Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Week 9, limiting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes) to 191 passing yards on 15 of 31 pass attempts—two of which were intercepted—en route to a 27-11 win. Sanchez overcame an early interception in the contest and completed 20 of 28 passes, including an 8-yard TD to receiver Santonio Holmes(notes) that gave New York a 20-3 lead in the third quarter.

New England, having lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants in Weeks 8 and 9, respectively, is looking for its first win this month. With 1 minute and 36 seconds left to play in last Sunday’s Super Bowl XLII rematch, Brady, on fourth and 8, put the Patriots in front 19-17 (before the extra point) when he threw a 14-yard TD to tight end Rob Gronkowski(notes).

But just as the crowd at Gillette Stadium could taste victory, Patriots safety Sergio Brown(notes) was called for pass interference while covering receiver Victor Cruz(notes), allowing New York to advance to the goal line. On the ensuing third and goal, QB Eli Manning(notes) completed a game-winning, 1-yard TD to TE Jake Ballard(notes) with 15 seconds remaining.

Despite the Patriots’ last-minute loss to the Giants, the Jets have more at stake in Week 10.

The specter of New England will persist until New York can become the preeminent power in a division that is still up for grabs. The Jets winning Sunday’s game would be an important step toward such, but a defeat gives the Patriots a sweep in the season series.

Oct 27, 2011 – Former New York Giants punter Matt Dodge, cut by the team during training camp after a tumultuous 2010 rookie season, reportedly worked out for the New York Jets this week. Dodge, of course, was beaten out for the Giants’ punting job this season by Steve Weatherford, who punted for the Jets the past two seasons.

Dodge, of course, was wildly inconsistent as a rookie for the Giants a season ago. He will always be remember by Giants’ fans for kicking the ball to Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson last season on the final play of a game, allowing Jackson to return the ball for a game-winning touchdown — the only time that has happened on a punt in NFL history.

Gang Green Nation speculates that Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff has not been happy with his team’s rookie punter, T.J. Conley, who is averaging 43.5 yards per punt (37.9 net) thus far.

Meanwhile, Weatherford – who was ripped by Westhoff after the Jets let him go as a free agent — has been spectacular for the Giants. He is averaging a career-best 46.4 yards per punt, with a net average of 38.2.

Ah, what a delicious irony it would be if Dodge and Weatherford ended up trading places.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Plaxico Burress planned to hop on a plane bound for Florida this week with his family and meet up with some old friends

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Plaxico Burress planned to hop on a plane bound for Florida this week with his family and meet up with some old friends.

Mickey Mouse. Goofy. Maybe even Donald Duck.

After everything the New York Jets receiver has been through the past few years, Disney World seemed as perfect a place as any for Burress and his family to kick back during the bye-week break.

“I’m pretty sure that they’ll enjoy that,” Burress said, “and just let them unwind and have a little fun.”

For Burress, the football field has always been that special place, and he’s relishing every play, every catch and, especially, every trip into the end zone. For a guy who’s just a few months removed from completing a nearly two-year prison sentence after accidentally shooting himself, this has been quite the Michael Vick-like storybook comeback.

And, Burress insists, he’s only getting started.

“It feels good to go out and have an impact,” he said, “and go out and make a few plays, get into a little groove and establish some consistency and just let this be a stepping stone.”

A big one, at that. His three-touchdown performance Sunday in the Jets’ 27-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers was a clear indication that Burress is back to being a big-time red-zone scoring threat — just as he was before his career was put on hold by a bullet in his right thigh in November 2008.

“That’s the way everybody envisioned the addition of Plaxico to our team, particularly in the red zone,” running back LaDainian Tomlinson said. “You saw it show up three times, for three big scores we needed.”

First came a three-yard catch in the second quarter that cut the Jets’ deficit to 14-10. Next was a four-yard grab late in the third quarter that again sliced the Chargers’ lead to four points at 21-17. The last came midway through the fourth quarter, a three-yard reception that gave New York the go-ahead score.

Burress scanned the crowd at MetLife Stadium after each touchdown, found his family and handed them the ball. His young son, Elijah, couldn’t believe it as the souvenirs piled up.

“After I gave him the third, he was like, ‘Daddy, you got threeee?’ And, I was like, ‘Yeah!’ ” Burress recalled. “He was excited, so excited that he wanted me to get up and take him to school (Monday) morning, I guess to kind of show his Daddy off type of thing.

“It was a great day for us and it was a long time coming for my family.”

They all wondered if there would ever be days like this again while they anxiously waited for Burress to come home while he served his 20 months in the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y. He cleaned toilets and counted off the days, dreaming of moments like those Sunday.

Even in his darkest days, Burress never lost faith he would make it back.

To his family. To the NFL. Or, to the end zone.

That’s why the former Super Bowl star with the New York Giants sat in the back seat of his car after his big game, stuck in traffic near the stadium with the radio off and alone in his thoughts.

“I was just shaking my head and just envisioning getting back to having fun and playing at a high level,” he said. “Just thinking about everything me and my family have been through.

“It was gratifying and humbling all at the same time. It can be a very humbling game. Don’t get too high with the highs and don’t get too low with the lows. Just keep working hard, staying positive and everything will work out.”

That was what some of the 23 missed phone calls and 40-something texts he received reminded him of. With highlights of each of his touchdown grabs shown all over television, the fans and media proclaimed: Burress Is Back.

“I was back a long time ago,” he said with a smile. “I just haven’t really been able to let the practice show on Sundays.”

Burress has 18 catches for 243 yards and five touchdowns, but it hasn’t been a completely smooth return. The Jets signed him in late July, then he missed some time with a sprained ankle. That limited his opportunities to click with Mark Sanchez, and they’re still fine-tuning things.

It was evident even Sunday, when they missed a few times on plays.

“People expect results right away,” Sanchez said. “We’re going through it and (Sunday) happened to be a good day, and we have to keep building on it.”

Burress said his legs aren’t completely in the shape he’d like them to be. He also acknowledged that he now goes to practice for the first time in his career truly needing to work on getting better. In the past, it all came so easily.

Some Jets players knew of Burress from charity events, Pro Bowl appearances and playing against him when he was with the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers. They also wondered about reports that maybe he wasn’t the hardest-working guy, a player who perhaps wasn’t always fully dedicated to the game.

“Yeah, you hear stuff, but you’ve got to leave that in the past,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said. “I think he has grown as a man and a human being.

“He does what he needs to do. I can’t say all that he went through taught him a lesson because I don’t know. And, I’m not saying it didn’t. But, we accepted him the day he got here. Nobody pointed any fingers, like, ‘Oh, you’re a bad person.’ “

Burress gradually got to know his new teammates, who respected what he had been through and appreciated his humility.

“He’s a Jet, man. We baptized him,” Revis said with a big laugh. “Nowadays, so many players get traded or end up with other teams. Plax is a Jet now.

“His past is his past. He made unbelievable plays in the past, and now he’s making them again. I mean, just throw it up to him.”

Burress still gets questions about the day he shot himself, what prison was like and how difficult the journey has been. That’s OK, he says. With more days like Sunday, that stuff will start to fade.

“I really don’t focus on what everybody’s saying about my past,” Burress said. “I mean, it’ll always be a part of my history. I’ve dealt with it and moved on, and one day, I hope everybody else will, too.

“I’m here just trying to get back to being a good football player and playing at a high level, and I know the only way that is going to come is through hard work.”

There is the quick update of the day.

It took seven games too long in some Jets fans’ eyes, but Plaxico Burress finally did today what he was supposed to do during the first game of the season: be the red zone threat the Jets haven’t had for years.

In the New York Jets’ 27-21 comeback win over the incoming 4-1 San Diego Chargers, Burress had the big breakout game the Jets, and more importantly, he himself had been waiting for. He caught three touchdown passes-two three-yarders and one four-yarder-using his 6’5″, 232 pound frame to the team’s advantage.

Burress did have another three touchdown game back in 2007 with the New York Giants during the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys (although the Cowboys came out on top 45-35), when he had a career best 12 touchdowns that season , and the Giants eventually won the Super Bowl.

But this three-touchdown day had to be a little sweeter and that much more meaningful. After 20 months in prison on a gun charge and starting fresh (and staying in New York to boot), I would say so.

And, seeing as how the touchdowns led to an all-important, must-win by the Jets (4-3), their second straight heading into their bye, Rex Ryan and his players should feel like they finally have momentum and swagger back. Sanchez should now feel comfortable with Burress, especially in the red zone, and some of the wide receiver fervor that has bubbled over the past couple of weeks should begin to dissipate.

With such an eye-opening performance on the part of Burress, expect him to be double teamed more often, which won’t help Sanchez at all in the near future. Overall, the Jets still lack the big play ability to really demoralize teams and put them away.

The veteran wide receiver caught three touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score that was set up by another interception by Darrelle Revis, and the Jets stormed back in the second half to defeat the San Diego Chargers 27-21 on Sunday. If you look at the stats from today’s game, the points were there but the yardage from Sanchez and his receivers were not. Shonn Greene and the rushing attack definitely helped push the ball downfield where Burress and Sanchez could capitalize together near the goal line.

Burress is 34 and his Pittsburgh Steeler days, running for the deep balls, are mostly behind him, but maybe he can still surprise once in a while and get behind the corner on a go route. He’s an NFL player after all and he still has the capabilities to do it, though not for long. It would also take some pressure off of Santonio Holmes to create the big play by himself.

Burress had just four catches for 25 yards and Sanchez finished 18-of-33 for 173 yards and three touchdowns all to Plax.

The connection has officially been sparked.

Let’s see if a fire burns now.

“I’m like, forget support — how about some concern?” Burress said.

“I’m like, forget support — how about some concern?” Burress said. “I did just have a bullet in my leg. And then I sat in his office, and he pushed back his chair and goes, ‘I’m glad you didn’t kill anybody!’ Man, we’re paid too much to be treated like kids. He doesn’t realize that we’re grown men and actually have kids of our own.”

He also told the magazine, which hits newsstands next week, that Coughlin is “not a real positive coach.”

“You look around the league, the Raheem Morrises and Rex Ryans — when their player makes a mistake, they take ‘em to the side and say, ‘We’ll get ‘em next time,’” Burress said. “But Coughlin’s on the sideline going crazy, man. I can’t remember one time when he tried to talk a player through not having a day he was having.”

Coughlin said at Giants camp Friday that he wasn’t aware of Burress’ comments in the magazine.

“I am really not all that concerned,” he said. “I’m sure it was lots of grandiose statements. I don’t know anything about that. I am really not interested in it, either.”

Burress said he was disappointed Manning never visited him or tried to communicate with him while he served his 20-month prison sentence.

“I was always his biggest supporter, even days he wasn’t on, ‘cause I could sense he didn’t have thick skin,” Burress said. “Then I went away, and I thought he would come see me, but nothing, not a letter, in two years. I don’t want to say it was a slap in the face, but I thought our relationship was better than that.”

Burress met with Coughlin and the Giants’ front office when he was a free agent — after the interview with the magazine — and has maintained it was a pleasant conversation that helped clear the air between them and provided some closure. Coughlin, though, said the meeting was for another reason, at least from his perspective.

“We were trying to decide whether and to what extent we were going to try to make an offer,” Coughlin said. “It wasn’t about closure. It was about business. It is about going forward, which this is about.”

Coughlin added that he never got the sense in the meeting that Burress would not want to sign with the Giants despite their previous differences.

While the wide receiver didn’t speak with Manning at that time, the two recently ran into each other at a movie theater and had what Burress said was a nice chat.

When asked about his comments in the magazine article, Burress said: “I was just being honest.”

The article mentions how Burress was nearly robbed at his home in Totowa, N.J., a few days before the nightclub incident and how the murder of his friend and former Washington defensive back Sean Taylor helped shape his decision to carry a handgun — and how he nearly left his gun in his car that night.

“I had a conscience about it — but said, ‘Nope, I’m takin’ it with me,’” he said. “And that changed my life.”

Burress talked about the way New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg treated him — calling for the receiver to be punished to the fullest extent of the law — “was totally wrong, stacked those charges so high, I had to go to jail.”

While in prison, Burress said he was treated “like a … axe murderer,” and got many letters from people that were less than positive.

“I was a human pincushion,” Burress said. “They were like, ‘Yeah, we finally got you.’”

Burress said he now gets loads of positive letters from people, a complete change from what he was getting just a few months ago.

“It’s like I’m more popular now for shooting myself than winning a Super Bowl!” he said. “Maybe they see a guy who made a mistake, but didn’t hurt no one but himself. I mean, if you can’t root for me, you must not own a mirror. All of us have made a big mistake, right?”

Former San Jose State star Dwight Lowery is gone from the New York Jets.

Former San Jose State star Dwight Lowery is gone from the New York Jets.

The Jets’ most surprising move as they cut their roster to the mandatory 53-player limit Saturday was trading Lowery, a versatile defensive back, to the Jacksonville Jaguars for an undisclosed conditional draft pick. Lowery spent three seasons with the Jets, filling in at cornerback and safety, after being drafted in the fourth round.

“It was an opportunity for Dwight to go to a place where he’s really going to be used and compete for that starting nickel job,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “I think it was kind of good for Dwight to go to Jacksonville and get more playing time, and for us, we felt we had the depth we needed.”

Cuts: Former Pro Bowlers Brandon Meriweather, Tommie Harris and Larry Johnson are among hundreds of players cut Saturday as NFL teams got down to the mandatory 53-man roster maximum.

Cancer survivor Mark Herzlich made the New York Giants’ roster after being signed as a free agent out of Boston College. The linebacker, who beat a rare form of bone cancer in college, was on the bubble — and still may be as teams search the waiver wire — but he’s on the Giants’ roster for now.

Meriweather, a safety who was a first-round pick of New England, earned two Pro Bowl selections in four seasons. Harris, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, was hoping to revive his career in Indianapolis. Johnson, a

two-time Pro Bowl running back, was released a week after signing with Miami.

Lee Roy Selmon: Hall of Fame NFL defensive end Lee Roy Selmon, 57, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was on the minds of teams he worked with a day after he was hospitalized with a stroke in the Tampa, Fla., area. Selmon once was athletic director at the University of South Florida. Dewey Selmon told the Tampa Tribune on Saturday that his brother is showing signs of improvement.

Bengals: Running back Cedric Benson was released from an Austin, Texas, jail after serving five days of a 20-day sentence for misdemeanor assault. The former Texas Longhorns star was arrested in July after punching a former roommate a year after an arrest for punching a bar employee.
