NFP: Burress expresses interest in joining Eagles

NFP: Burress expresses interest in joining Eagles

Appearing on the Philadelphia radio station 97.5 The Fanatic, New York Jets free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress let it be known what team he is most interested in playing for next season.

Plaxico BurressCould Burress end up wearing a different shade of green next season?

The ten-year veteran–who is not expected back in New York–said, “Nothing would make me happier,” speaking to the possibility of being an Eagle in 2012, while noting that the team expressed interest in him last offseason.

While there’s no telling just how interested the Eagles are — or were — in Burress, they remain a team believed by some to be seeking help at the receiver position. Burress is unlikely to receive equal payment to the one-year agreement he reached with the Jets last season which was worth roughly $3 million.

The former first-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers battled injuries this past season, but still managed 45 receptions for 612 yards and eight touchdowns.

Yet another side-plot to keep an eye on with the March 13th free agency period quickly approaching.

New York Jets thump Chiefs to stay in NFL race

SIMON EVANS

The Houston Texans reached the National Football League (NFL) playoffs for the first time while the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots both edged closer to booking their spots in the post-season.

The Texans wrapped up the AFC South title with a 20-19 comeback victory at the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday to secure their first playoff berth since joining the league in 2002.

Rookie quarterback T.J. Yates won the game for the Texans with a six yard touchdown pass to Kevin Walter with just two seconds left on the clock.

The conversion sealed Houston’s seventh straight victory and saw them join the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs after they both secured their positions last week.

New Orleans, Super Bowl champions two seasons back, clinched their fifth straight win after quarterback Drew Brees threw two fourth quarter touchdowns to Marques Colston as they won 22-17 at the Tennessee Titans.

Brees threw for 337 yards and his two touchdowns meant he had thrown for at least one touchdown in 40 consecutive games, a record bettered only by Johnny Unitas’ 47.

The NFC South leading Saints would be assured of their playoff spot later on Sunday if the Chicago Bears lost to the Denver Broncos.

The Atlanta Falcons kept up the chase in the NFC South after a 31-23 victory over the Carolina Panthers with quarterback Matt Ryan throwing for 320 yards and four touchdowns.

The New England Patriots were also hitting form at the right time, picking up a fifth successive win with a 34-27 triumph over the Washington Redskins, masterminded by quarterback Tom Brady, who threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to tight-end Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots (10-3) led the AFC East ahead of the New York Jets (8-5) who enjoyed a 37-10 romp over Kansas City.

The Baltimore Ravens (10-3) took advantage of the woeful and winless Indianapolis Colts to record a 24-10 win and grab the joint leadership with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.

The Detroit Lions have struggled of late, losing five of their last seven games, but their hopes of playoff football remained alive after they scraped together a 34-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

In the final seconds, Minnesota had a great chance to win but their back-up quarterback Joe Webb fumbled on first and goal and the ball was recovered by Lions defensive end Cliff Avril.

New York Jets in a Must-win Game Versus New…

Make no mistake about it, the New York Jets (5-3) need to win more so than the New England Patriots (5-3) when the AFC East powers face off at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Forget that New York knocked New England out of the playoffs last season, that it has advanced to two straight AFC Championship games and done so by winning four playoff games on the road. Those are admirable accomplishments, but still just accomplishments of the past. This is about the now.

Head coach Rex Ryan and quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) have proven themselves worthy adversaries of their Patriots counterparts, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady(notes), but after suffering a 30-21 loss to New England in Week 5, the Jets’ chances of winning their division in 2011 will take a huge hit should they fall short this weekend.

The Jets, Patriots and Buffalo Bills (5-3) are tied atop the AFC East entering Week 10. New York bullied Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Week 9, limiting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes) to 191 passing yards on 15 of 31 pass attempts—two of which were intercepted—en route to a 27-11 win. Sanchez overcame an early interception in the contest and completed 20 of 28 passes, including an 8-yard TD to receiver Santonio Holmes(notes) that gave New York a 20-3 lead in the third quarter.

New England, having lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants in Weeks 8 and 9, respectively, is looking for its first win this month. With 1 minute and 36 seconds left to play in last Sunday’s Super Bowl XLII rematch, Brady, on fourth and 8, put the Patriots in front 19-17 (before the extra point) when he threw a 14-yard TD to tight end Rob Gronkowski(notes).

But just as the crowd at Gillette Stadium could taste victory, Patriots safety Sergio Brown(notes) was called for pass interference while covering receiver Victor Cruz(notes), allowing New York to advance to the goal line. On the ensuing third and goal, QB Eli Manning(notes) completed a game-winning, 1-yard TD to TE Jake Ballard(notes) with 15 seconds remaining.

Despite the Patriots’ last-minute loss to the Giants, the Jets have more at stake in Week 10.

The specter of New England will persist until New York can become the preeminent power in a division that is still up for grabs. The Jets winning Sunday’s game would be an important step toward such, but a defeat gives the Patriots a sweep in the season series.

The New York Jets Plaxico Burress-Mark Sanchez…

It took seven games too long in some Jets fans’ eyes, but Plaxico Burress finally did today what he was supposed to do during the first game of the season: be the red zone threat the Jets haven’t had for years.

In the New York Jets’ 27-21 comeback win over the incoming 4-1 San Diego Chargers, Burress had the big breakout game the Jets, and more importantly, he himself had been waiting for. He caught three touchdown passes-two three-yarders and one four-yarder-using his 6’5″, 232 pound frame to the team’s advantage.

Burress did have another three touchdown game back in 2007 with the New York Giants during the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys (although the Cowboys came out on top 45-35), when he had a career best 12 touchdowns that season , and the Giants eventually won the Super Bowl.

Like us on Facebook

But this three-touchdown day had to be a little sweeter and that much more meaningful. After 20 months in prison on a gun charge and starting fresh (and staying in New York to boot), I would say so.

And, seeing as how the touchdowns led to an all-important, must-win by the Jets (4-3), their second straight heading into their bye, Rex Ryan and his players should feel like they finally have momentum and swagger back. Sanchez should now feel comfortable with Burress, especially in the red zone, and some of the wide receiver fervor that has bubbled over the past couple of weeks should begin to dissipate.

With such an eye-opening performance on the part of Burress, expect him to be double teamed more often, which won’t help Sanchez at all in the near future. Overall, the Jets still lack the big play ability to really demoralize teams and put them away.

The veteran wide receiver caught three touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score that was set up by another interception by Darrelle Revis, and the Jets stormed back in the second half to defeat the San Diego Chargers 27-21 on Sunday. If you look at the stats from today’s game, the points were there but the yardage from Sanchez and his receivers were not. Shonn Greene and the rushing attack definitely helped push the ball downfield where Burress and Sanchez could capitalize together near the goal line.

Burress is 34 and his Pittsburgh Steeler days, running for the deep balls, are mostly behind him, but maybe he can still surprise once in a while and get behind the corner on a go route. He’s an NFL player after all and he still has the capabilities to do it, though not for long. It would also take some pressure off of Santonio Holmes to create the big play by himself.

Burress had just four catches for 25 yards and Sanchez finished 18-of-33 for 173 yards and three touchdowns all to Plax.

The connection has officially been sparked.

Let’s see if a fire burns now.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Rex Ryan: Darrelle Revis will be the best Jet ever

2011 AFC Championship: New York Jets v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

Joe Namath and Don Maynard are the only two Hall of Famers who played most of their careers with the New York Jets, but neither one will go down in history as the greatest Jet of them all.

At least, not according to Jets coach Rex Ryan, who says Darrelle Revis will be remembered as the best ever to put on a Jets uniform.

“One day we’re gonna say that this is the best Jet in the history of the New York Jet franchise, I believe that,” Ryan said as part of NFL Network’s look at Revis for its ongoing Top 100 players series. “And I think we’re gonna also see him in Canton one day.”

Ryan has previously called Revis the best player in the NFL, so high praise from coach to player is nothing new. But this takes it up another notch: Ryan is saying that Revis, who’s only 25 years old, is putting together a resume that will have him considered not only among the greats of his era, but among the greats of all time.

Jets’ Harris inks franchise tender, ‘Core Four’ all under contract

Linebacker David Harris signed his franchise tender with the New York Jets on Wednesday, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, citing a league source.

The one-year tag will be worth in the neighborhood of $10 million, which was the average of the five highest-paid linebackers from the 2010 season.

Harris has teamed with cornerback Darrelle Revis to make up the heart of Rex Ryan’s defense. Harris, who made a base salary of $550,000 in the final year of his rookie deal, was voted the Jets’ MVP by his teammates after having 99 tackles and three sacks in his fourth season.

Since being a second-round pick out of Michigan in 2007, Harris has 428 tackles, 15 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said shortly after New York’s AFC Championship Game loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that re-signing Harris was a priority. The Jets still could lock him up to a long-term deal once the NFL’s uncertain labor situation is cleared up despite placing the franchise tag on him.

The Jets last used the franchise tag five years ago on Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham, who was traded one month later to the Atlanta Falcons for a first-round draft pick.

Harris is the last of the team’s “Core Four” players — including Revis, Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson — to sign a new contract. The other three players were given new deals before the season, and Harris acknowledged in August that he wouldn’t get his until after this season because of constraints due to the collective bargaining agreement.

The league has advised teams that they have until Thursday to tag players.

New York Jets’ LaDainian Tomlinson: ‘I fully expect to play football with the Jets next year’

IRVING, Texas — LaDainian Tomlinson said he’s still heartbroken by the New York Jets’ loss in the AFC Championship Game, but he has no intention of ending his legendary career on that note — and he expects to be back with the Jets in 2011.

Jets: Take ‘Em or Trash ‘Em?

The Jets finished one win shy of the Super Bowl. With a busy offseason looming, let us know who should stay and who should go. Vote Now!

“I would definitely like to play, no question,” Tomlinson, 31, said Wednesday night at a fundraiser for his charitable foundation. “Really and truly, I’m under contract, and I fully expect to play football with the Jets next year. Until I’m told otherwise, I just expect to be there.”

Tomlinson, who turns 32 in June, is due to make $2.4 million in the final season of his contract. There has been speculation about his future because the Jets have two young running backs, Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight. General manager Mike Tannenbaum indicated last week he expects Tomlinson to be back, but he left a hint of doubt by saying “things could change.”

Tomlinson believes he’s wanted, based on “all indications” from the organization. Rebounding from a disappointing 2009 with the San Diego Chargers, he rushed for a team-high 914 yards and caught 51 passes in his first season with the Jets.

As optimistic as he was about his own future, Tomlinson was down on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, who fired Wade Phillips during the season and finished 6-10.

“In my opinion, I think the guys quit playing for Wade,” said Tomlinson, who grew up in nearby Waco and rooted for the Cowboys. “At some point, there was a disconnect, and that happens. It absolutely happens. When guys disconnect from the head coach, they just don’t want to play for him anymore. You saw when Jason Garrett took over, they responded. That told me they just quit on Wade.

“I don’t know what happened. Maybe something went on privately there, but it was something that happened. [Cowboys owner/GM] Jerry Jones had to make a move, and they responded to Jerry.”

This week could’ve been a storybook homecoming for Tomlinson, a local icon who played college ball at TCU. He’s never played in a Super Bowl, and he wanted so badly to play in Cowboys Stadium.

“I’m still in a little bit of a funk,” he said, alluding to the 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It was heartbreaking, to be honest with you. I wanted this. I know my family and my fans wanted this, to come back home … It would’ve been such a dream come true.”

Tomlinson lamented the brutal first half, in which the Jets fell behind 24-0.

“For us, our downfall was the way we started the game,” he said. “If we start the game any better than what we did, I think we win the game.”

Darrelle Revis: New York Jets had post-New England Patriots letdown vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Yes, there was a post-New England hangover, according to Darrelle Revis.

The New York Jets’ star cornerback, speaking Thursday at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, said the team was “relaxed” during a listless first half in the AFC Championship Game.

Jets: Take ‘Em or Trash ‘Em?

The Jets finished one win shy of the Super Bowl. With a busy offseason looming, let us know who should stay and who should go. Vote Now!

Several players admitted after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers that the team came out flat, but they refused to connect it to the previous week’s emotional and stunning upset of the Patriots — until Revis.

Asked by the NFL Network if there was a letdown after the divisional win in New England, Revis said, “I think … you could say that. Yeah, you could say that. On people’s body language, you can kind of see guys just relaxed. Guys are relaxed and didn’t know what was at stake. That’s why we came out so flat and we didn’t finish strong.”

It’s mind-boggling to think a team could lack emotion in a championship game, especially a franchise that hasn’t been to the Super Bowl in 42 years, but the Jets got pushed around and fell behind 24-0. Unofficially, they missed 11 tackles in the first half, unable to slow the Steelers’ powerful running game.

Revis said several leaders spoke up in the locker room at halftime, including him, and the Jets made a game of it before losing 24-19.

Jets blog

In his Pro Bowl interview, Revis revisited his summer-long holdout, claiming he was prepared to sit out the season if he didn’t receive a new contract to his liking. He eventually signed a four-year, $46 million deal, finalized one week before the season opener.

“Yeah, I mean, we prepared for the worst,” said Revis, whose holdout was highly contentious. “[I] didn’t think I was going to play this year.”

Asked if he would’ve sat out the season, he replied, “We was leaning on that way to do that. We didn’t want it to go down that road, but I have to do what’s best for me and my agents have to do what’s best for me as well.”

“I just think the whole situation got out of hand, it really did,” he continued. “That’s why I wasn’t in the media, not trying to say nothing, just keep quiet and relax and one day it’s going to get done, and I’ll be playing football again.”

Revis made the Pro Bowl for the third time in four seasons.

Jets hungry to buck history; Steelers have richer pedigree, but New York riding hot streak

PITTSBURGH – History tells us the Pittsburgh Steelers belong. The New York Jets? Not so much.

The 2010 season and the playoffs, however, have written their own version of history, with a common theme: Anything can happen.

It already has to the Jets, who never had won in the Steel City before edging the Steelers 22-17 in December. They also have humbled Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in the playoffs – who does that in consecutive weeks?

In a season when both conference title games feature No. 2 seeds and against No. 6s, it’s foolish to discount the Jets in Sunday’s AFC championship.

A franchise that validated the AFL’s talents by winning the Super Bowl in 1969 has not been back since. The Jets played for the conference title in 1982, 1998 and last year. They hadn’t even won postseason games in consecutive years until doing so last season and this.

“It’s been a long time for our fans and our franchise,” said defensive end Shaun Ellis, a first-round pick in 2000 and the current player with the longest Jets career. “So for us to be able to get to that point – and not just get there, but get there and win it -would be huge for us.

“It’s time.”

Naturally, the Steelers say otherwise. Their time for AFC championship games has been frequent: this is No. 15 for Pittsburgh, with a 7-7 split thus far.

As for Super Bowls, no franchise owns more Lombardi Trophies than Pittsburgh’s six. The Steelers have won it twice in the last six years, after the 2005 and 2008 seasons.

They’re 4-point favorites, and part of the oddsmakers’ belief in them has to stem from their experience at this level.

“We have one standard,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “That standard is winning.”

Hines Ward has lived up to that standard for 13 seasons, easily the most as a Steeler on the current roster. He has been one of the franchise’s greatest postseason performers and was MVP of the 2006 Super Bowl.

He understands fully what has bred success in Pittsburgh and will continue to do so after he is long gone.

“People try to compare this team to the Super Bowl teams we played on, but every team is different,” Ward said. “We’ve got a lot of young guys and a lot of battle-tested guys who have been there.”

That’s all the news for today.

Steelers silence loudmouthed Jets

PITTSBURGH – The New York Jets were quiet all week.

Not much changed after the game started. By the time they made some noise, it was simply too late.

Rex Ryan’s big-mouthed bunch was shut down and shut up in the first half by Pittsburgh on Sunday night, as the Jets’ defense was dominated by Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall and the Super Bowl-bound Steelers 24-19.

After a loud run through the postseason that had the Jets in the AFC Championship game for the second straight year, New York couldn’t get anything going until a second-half comeback attempt fell short.

Ryan’s aggressive defense was leaky from the beginning, allowing Pittsburgh gain after big gain as the Steelers jumped out to a 24-0 lead that the Jets couldn’t recover from.

“They made plays when they had to,” Ryan said, “and that’s why they’re moving on.”

Ryan said all season he thought his team was going to win the Super Bowl, even boldly scribbling “Soon To Be Champs” on an ESPN bus during training camp.

It wasn’t to be. Again.

Two trips to the AFC championship game, and two disappointing walks off the field by Ryan and the Jets.

“I would change the outcome of this game, and that’s the only thing I would change,” Ryan said. “We don’t need to apologize to anybody. We’ll be back, you’ll see.”

Ryan called the Jets’ first-round playoff game against Indianapolis “personal” against Peyton Manning, and the defense bottled up the Colts’ Pro Bowl quarterback.

The next week, Ryan said it was between him and the Patriots’ Bill Belichick, saying he needed to outcoach his counterpart.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie fired things up by calling Tom Brady an expletive, and the trash talk escalated from there.

Then, the Jets backed up all the big talk by stunning the Patriots 28-21. In a postgame TV interview, linebacker Bart Scott went into a rant that become a viral hit on the Internet. When a reporter said he’d see him in Pittsburgh, Scott growled: “Can’t wait!”

It became a catch phrase for Jets fans, and his teammates teased him about it.

But things took a silent turn last week when Ryan heaped praise on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, and his players followed suit.

Turns out, the Jets needed to keep that mean streak going.

Maybe they left it all out on the field at Foxborough.

It certainly appeared that way from the start, as the Jets couldn’t get the Steelers offense off the field. Missed tackles, bad decisions and subpar performances put New York in a 24-3 halftime hole. Pittsburgh held the ball for more than 21 minutes, outgained New York 231-50 and outrushed the Jets 135-1 in the opening half.

That’s all the news for today.

AFC championship: Jets at Steelers

Matchups for the AFC Championship game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field:

When the Jets have the ball

Don’t be fooled by the Jets’ claims they need to pound the ball on the ground to win. For one thing, nobody pounds the Steelers, who allowed the fewest yards rushing, a mere 1,004, this season. For another, the Jets have thrown the ball well recently, particularly in last week’s shocker at New England. QB Mark Sanchez has completed 60.7 percent of his passes, had three TDs against the Patriots, and his 91.6 rating is nothing to ignore.

He also has dynamic receivers in former Steelers star Santonio Holmes, the MVP of Pittsburgh’s February 2009 Super Bowl triumph, and Braylon Edwards, and reliable ones in Jerricho Cotchery and TE Dustin Keller.

New York’s offensive line is a strength even without injured RT Damien Woody (Achilles’ tendon). Nick Mangold is a Pro Bowl center and RG Brandon Moore probably deserved to go to Hawaii.

Still, the defense New York faces is far more fierce and formidable than what it saw in Indianapolis or New England the last two weeks. Neither the Colts nor the Patriots have playmakers like S Troy Polamalu, who could wind up anywhere on the field at any time, and LBs James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley. The Jets must get solid performances from tackles D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Wayne Hunter, plus dependable blitz pickups from RBs Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson, along with steady veteran FB Tony Richardson.

Tomlinson has had a rebirth in New York. He and Greene have combined for 271 yards rushing in the two postseason games. If they get anywhere near their playoff averages today, it bodes well for the Jets.

Regardless, Sanchez must remain consistent and throw in some big plays such as the TD pass to Holmes last week or the one to Edwards that set up the winning field goal in Indianapolis. Keller should expect to be rocked by Polamalu and S Ryan Clark every time he touches the ball, but Pittsburgh’s cornerbacks are beatable.

When the Steelers have the ball

Don’t be fooled by the Steelers’ claims they need to pound the ball on the ground to win, either. The running game might be a bit more critical for them, and Rashard Mendenhall can be a beast; he rushed for 1,273 yards and 13 touchdowns during the season, but managed only 46 yards against Baltimore.

Pittsburgh’s offensive line, banged up all year, will be tested by a resurgent Jets defense that pressured Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Rookie C Maurkice Pouncey has more than held his own, but QB Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t always get the same support from the rest of his blockers. Of course, few quarterbacks can manufacture something out of chaos the way Roethlisberger does – and has done in winning two Super Bowls. He masterfully led the comeback from a 14-point deficit against Baltimore last week.

Although Hines Ward is the key receiver in big spots, Mike Wallace figures to get the Revis Treatment. Shutdown CB Darrelle Revis will be a huge challenge for Wallace, Ward, Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown, one of the heroes of the win over the Ravens. Just like Manning and Brady, Roethlisberger probably will go after CB Antonio Cromartie and look over the middle for TE Heath Miller. New York doesn’t cover tight ends over the middle particularly well.

Even if the Jets get penetration similar to what they got against the Patriots from Shaun Ellis and Calvin Pace, that doesn’t mean Roethlisberger will be stymied. His ability to take hits, avoid the rush and throw on the run make him dangerous everywhere.

Special teams

A strength of the Jets under coordinator Mike Westhoff, with Brad Smith the main threat. Smith ranked second in the league with 1,432 yards on kick returns, a 28.6 average, and two touchdowns. The Steelers very well remember the 97-yarder Smith had to open New York’s 22-17 victory at Pittsburgh on Dec. 19. The Steelers counter mostly with Brown on returns. Brown had one kickoff runback for a score during the season. Both teams are solid on kickoff coverages in particular.

Pittsburgh changed placekickers in midseason from Jeff Reed to Shaun Suisham and it worked out nicely. The turf at Heinz field can be problematic, but Suisham went 14 for 15 on field goals. New York’s Nick Folk isn’t quite so reliable, even missing a 30-yarder at Foxborough. He did hit the 32-yarder that lifted the Jets past the Colts.

Steve Weatherford gets good hang time and can punt directionally. Having kicked in the Meadowlands all year should prepare him for tricky winds, the kind that Steelers P Jeremy Kapinos knows well.

Coaching

All the kidding aside about their personalities being so dissimilar, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin and Jets head man Rex Ryan have much in common.

Both are superb defensive coaches, albeit with different styles. Tomlin, who won a championship in 2008, is blessed with Harrison and Polamalu – and coordinator Dick LeBeau, possibly the best the NFL has seen. They get the most out of everyone on D.

Tomlin is a terrific evaluator of talent and a strong motivator.

Ryan might be bombastic, but he gets results, in great part by letting assistants such as Westhoff and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have freedom. His roster fits the personality Ryan wants for his team: brash, rugged, clutch.

What do you guys think about this.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets haven’t ruled out offseason shoulder surgery for Mark Sanchez, but the second-year quarterback was hopeful Monday that he can avoid it.

“I’m optimistic about everything and, hopefully, nothing needs to be done,” Sanchez said one day after the Jets’ season ended with a 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. “A little rest, and I’ll be ready to go again.”

Sanchez was hurt Dec. 19 against the Steelers, and an MRI exam at the time revealed minor cartilage damage, sources have said. He was limited in practice for three weeks, but he never missed a snap in a game, playing well down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Nevertheless, Sanchez will seek additional medical opinions over the next few days to determine whether he needs arthroscopic surgery.

“I’ll still talk to the doctors about it,” he said. “We did our exit physicals and they’re thrilled about the progress I’ve made the last couple of weeks. Things are pointing in the right direction. If there was anything serious, I think things would have declined. Things could’ve gotten worse, and I wouldn’t have been able to practice.

“If anything, it just got better. That’s a good sign. I’ll just take it from there, talk to the doctors, get a couple of opinions on it, try to get it looked at …”

In five games after the injury, Sanchez completed 62 percent of his passes, with six touchdowns, two interceptions and a 92.2 passer rating. He played so well that it became a running joke around the team, Ryan telling Sanchez that he should’ve hurt his shoulder sooner.

Ryan, too, was non-committal on whether Sanchez will need surgery.

“I’m not sure about this,” he said. “I’m sure, if Mark goes to get an opinion, it won’t be just one, it’ll probably be five or six opinions. We’ve got to do what’s in the best interests of Mark and our football team.”

Sanchez made significant improvement in Year 2, improving his decision making and cutting down his interceptions. He threw 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, compared to 12 and 20, respectively, as a rookie.

He’s still not as accurate as he should be, with a completion percentage of 54.8, only a point better than last season. But Sanchez said the playoff run, in which he won two games on the road, did wonders for his confidence.

“I don’t think I’ve been more focused, maybe in my life,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve been more prepared. I just felt good about the plan. I was seeing things before they happened. The game started to slow down. I felt great.”
