EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Darrelle Revis ran an interception 100 yards for a touchdown Monday night, helping the New York Jets lead the Miami Dolphins 17-6 after three quarters.

Revis made the longest interception runback in the league this season.

New York‘s anemic offense finally woke up late in the second quarter, leading to Mark Sanchez‘s 5-yard TD run on a quarterback draw with 1:14 to go in the second period to set the halftime score.

Then the Jets marched 79 yards in 13 plays in the third period to Nick Folk’s 28-yard field goal for a 17-6 lead. They took up nearly half the quarter on that drive, with Sanchez completing consecutive 24-yard passes to Dustin Keller and Joe McKnight.

That was in stark contrast to the early going. It took the Jets until 6:17 remained in the half to get their initial first down. They were outgained 203 yards to 34 at that point. But they were in front thanks to Revis, and added to the lead with an 81-yard drive.

Sanchez hit Keller for 27 yards and Santonio Holmes for 20 on that series, which he capped himself with a third-down surge into the end zone.

In the first quarter, Matt Moore, playing quarterback with Chad Henne gone for the season after shoulder surgery, threw outside to Brandon Marshall. But the receiver had cut inside, and Revis easily caught the errant pass, then took off the length of the field.

Reggie Bush, who left in the third quarter with his right arm hanging at his side — it was announced as a neck injury — gave Miami a quick start by sprinting around the right side for 36 yards on the Dolphins’ first play from scrimmage, but the drive stalled when Moore threw incomplete on third-and-1. Rather than go for it, Miami chose to punt and Brandon Fields’ kick was downed at the 2.

When the Jets sputtered on offense for most of the opening half — they had 11 three-and-outs in 15 series over two games before the long drive the Dolphins took over at the New York 47. A 20-yard completion to Marshall, who had yet to make good on his promise to get ejected from the game, got the ball to the 10, where the Jets held.

Dan Carpenter’s 23-yard field goal put Miami on top 3-0, and the Dolphins had the ball back seconds later when a bouncing kickoff ricocheted off blocker Garrett McIntyre to Miami’s Austin Spitler at the Jets 18.

That’s when the All-Pro Revis picked off Moore’s pass and weaved through the Dolphins without being touched to tie the longest interception runback in Jets history. Aaron Glenn went 100 yards against Miami in 1996.

Miami responded with a 46-yard completion to Marshall as cornerback Antonio Cromartie lost coverage, and was at the New York 4 when the quarter ended.

Again, the Dolphins stalled and Carpenter kicked a 23-yard field goal, making it 7-6.

Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith limped off dragging his right leg late in the third quarter. The Dolphins said he had cramps.

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

DAVIE -The New York Jets rank fifth in the NFL against the pass this year. But over the past three seasons, nobody has been better in at least a couple of key statistical categories.

Opposing quarterbacks have compiled a 68 passer rating and completed just 51.9 percent of their passes against the Jets since the start of 2009. Both are league bests.

“They’re well coached, and there’s a lot of moving parts,” Dolphins offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said last week during a brief break in his preparations for Monday night’s contest at MetLife Stadium. “They’re a challenge to prepare for because of the volume of things they do and the players they have.”

Making matters more difficult, of course, is the fact that Matt Moore will be making his first start at quarterback in place of the injured Chad Henne. While he has had two weeks to prepare, Moore, who has never faced the Jets, knows what he’s up against.

“There’s definitely talented guys over there,” he said. “Guys that have been playing in this defense for a while and have that mentality. We need to really understand what’s going on, know our game plan. It’s going to come down to matchups and winning the situation.”

That won’t be easy against the Jets’ personnel. Three-time Pro Bowl selection Darrelle Revis is at one corner, and Antonio Cromartie, who is just a notch below that level, is at the other. At safeties are leading tackler Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard, who came over with coach Rex Ryan from Baltimore in 2009 and is considered one of the smartest players in the game.

“Their personnel is definitely up there in the top tier,” slot receiver Davone Bess said.

“They’re talented back there, and they throw a bunch of different looks at you,” tight end Anthony Fasano said. “They have a lot of confidence in their skill guys. It’s a great defense.”

Few coaches in the NFL know Revis better than Daboll. They both joined the Jets in 2007, Daboll as quarterbacks coach and Revis as a rookie out of Pittsburgh.

“Make no mistake about it, he’s about as real as they come,” Daboll said. “He’s the total package at corner.”

Statistically, no one is even close. Over the past three years, Revis has been targeted 177 times and given up 62 completions, a 35 percent completion rate. No one else in the NFL is below 44 percent over the same time frame.

One might expect having Revis and Cromartie playing man-to-man against the opponent’s top two wideouts would make the rest of the Jets’ defensive scheme easier to figure out. Not so, Daboll said.

“It’s a difficult scheme to prepare for. He’s got two good corners that can play out there on an island and get up in your face, (but) they do a whole bunch of different things with the remaining nine guys.”

Fasano and Henne found success with at least one route in last year’s game at Sun Life Stadium. Early in the second quarter with the ball at the Jets’ 3-yard-line, Fasano ran to the end zone, turned and posted up, using his big frame to shield defenders and score Miami’s first TD. But in the final seconds of the game, when they tried the same play trailing 31-23, Henne’s throw from the 6 bounced off Fasano’s shoulder and was intercepted.

“It was a bang-bang play,” Fasano said. “We tried to run the same play from a little further out but didn’t time it up at the end. It was kind of what the defense was giving us at the time.”

Brandon Marshall, who has vowed to amp up his emotional level this week, had 10 catches for 166 yards and Henne threw for 352 in that game, proving success against the Jets’ secondary is possible. But even as Moore works to build chemistry with his receiver group, the Dolphins know they’re in for a challenge.

“We know Rex really well, and they have the personnel to make it tough,” Bess said. “It’s a matter of going out and having the will and the mind-set that we’re going to win the game.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Since 2009, when he shut down every premier receiver he faced, New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis(notes) has been known as one of the two or three best at his position in the NFL. In 2010, he didn’t have an interception after picking off six passes the year before, but as we know about cornerbacks, stats can be extremely misleading — Revis’ targets plummeted from 96 to 55, per Football Outsiders. Revis’ last-second pick of Tony Romo in the Jets’ 2011 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys was a brilliant example of how to bait a quarterback, and should serve as a reminder to everyone in the league that throwing to Revis under any circumstances … well, it’s not really smart.

However, as the Jets prepare to welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars to MetLife Stadium for their Week 2 showdown, there’s one receiver who isn’t as impressed by Revis as he probably should be. Jason Hill(notes) (who?) believes that Revis’ reputation is based to a degree on that old real estate maxim — location, location, location. Before the media could even give him the question about what it might be like to go up against Revis, Hill had a ready — and very strange — answer.

“Same one that everyone else gives us,” Hill said of the question. “This is a league full of great players. I think sometimes they get overhyped. I talked to [Jaguars safety] Drew [Coleman], Drew played there. He says it’s just the aura of New York. They got a big media. That’s not the Jacksonville paper, that’s the big New York Times paper so they get more pub[licity]. That’s what it is.

Um … so you’re saying that Revis is overhyped … not as good as we think he is … because he plays in New York?

“It’s a game that we all play. He’s been playing the game, Revis, just as long as I’ve been playing. This is a game full of good players making plays. He just made a lot more plays on TV than we’ve made being here in Jacksonville. He’s a good player. We respect him. Hopefully he respects us because we’re going to bring it just like they’re going to bring it.”

Note: C.J. Ah You(notes), Chansi Stuckey(notes), Yamon Figurs(notes) and Sabby Piscitelli(notes) have also played as long as Revis has … and they’ve each been about as effective as Hill.

“He’s a good player, Pro Bowl player, I’m trying to make it to the Pro Bowl, too. This’ll be a good game to put some notches on our belts too. It’s the New York Times vs. the Jacksonville paper. New York Times, they got a lot more viewers than you got.”

Yeouch. That last shot was to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union, who picked up the quote and ran with it on her blog.

So, let’s talk about Jason Hill’s credentials. Since the San Francisco 49ers took him in the third round of the 2007 draft, Hill has caught 55 career balls for 714 yards and five touchdowns. That’s not in one season — that’s the guy’s entire career. Hill did catch four balls for 53 yards in Jacksonville’s season-opening win against the Tennessee Titans, and that may be why he’s feeling so bold right now — he’s well on his way to exceeding 2010′s total of (snicker) 11 catches in six games.

As you might expect, Revis wasn’t quite sure who Hill even was when he was told of the comments.

“I don’t even know who that dude is. What’s his name again? I have no clue. I don’t know who he is, whatever he said is what he said. Whatever his opinion is of us, we’ll find out on Sunday. I don’t care what he says, I don’t know him. He don’t know me, he don’t know the Jets, so he’ll find out on Sunday.”

Of course, the best part of this whole story is that Hill isn’t even sure to play against the Jets — he didn’t participate in Jacksonville’s Wednesday and Thursday practices because he’s dealing with a hip injury, and he’s listed as doubtful.

“Well he shouldn’t have been talking in the first place, because he can’t back it up now,” Revis said.

Still, Hill’s convinced that Revis and his pals, who have made the last two AFC Championship games while the Jags have failed to make the playoffs since 2007, are simply basking in a glow they don’t deserve.

“That’s the way it is. That’s what it is. It’s not just the Giants, Jets, same thing with the Knicks. I’m a Golden State Warriors fan, but the Knicks get more hype. Not that they’re better. They just get more hype ’cause they’re from New York.”

OK, Mr. Hill. Let’s just hope you’re not spouting that opinion from the sideline on Sunday, because we’d really love to see you tear Darrelle Revis up on the field.

As Jets teammate Bart Scott(notes) would say, we’re sure that Mr. Revis can’t wait.

Related: Sabby Piscitelli, Yamon Figurs, Darrelle Revis, Bart Scott, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans

What do you guys think about this.

Darrelle Revis did Versus and NFL Films a big favor when he made
the key play in the New York Jets’ 27-24 victory over Dallas on
Sunday night.

Revis wore a microphone for a weekly new show, “NFL Turning
Point,” that will be aired each Thursday night on Versus, beginning
this week. Then he produced the turning point for his team with a
last-minute interception to set up Nick Folk’s 50-yard field
goal.

The All-Pro cornerback said Wednesday it’s the first time he has
worn a microphone during a game, and his conversations with
outspoken Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant were captured throughout the
night.

“Yeah, pretty cool. I’ll tell you, though, there was some crazy
stuff on that mic, man,” Revis said. “It’s the heat of the battle.
He said words to me, and I’m saying words back to Dez.”

Some of those words might need to be deleted from the Versus
show.

“The Jets’ (public relations) staff said it would look into it
before it got out there,” Revis said about agreeing to wear the
microphone. “It’s X-rated. There was a lot of stuff going on, a lot
of back and forth.

“That’s real life. Whatever was said on there, that’s what it
was. It’s in the heat of the moment, the heat of battle. That’s
what it was.”

At one point, both Revis and Bryant talk about their respect for
each other. Then they go right back to competing _ and
trash-talking.

Never did Revis think about the fact he was wearing a
microphone.

“Not until after the game and you’re like going through
everything and thinking about what happened, and you’re like, ‘Oh,
man, I shouldn’t have said this or that,’ ” he said with a laugh.
“But by then, it’s too late.”

Revis had a typically strong game, shutting down Bryant for most
of the night after the Cowboys receiver victimized New York’s other
cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, on several early plays, including a
touchdown catch.

With the game tied at 24, the Cowboys had a chance for a winning
drive with 59 seconds left, but Romo’s short pass was picked off by
Revis. He returned it 20 yards to the Dallas 34, then stood on the
sideline gesturing at the crowd and shouting.

All of it audible.

“They said they were going to edit it, though _ I hope,” Revis
said.

Of course, the best part of this whole story is that Hill isn’t even sure to play against the Jets — he didn’t participate in Jacksonville’s Wednesday and Thursday practices because he’s dealing with a hip injury.

Joe Namath and Don Maynard are the only two Hall of Famers who played most of their careers with the New York Jets, but neither one will go down in history as the greatest Jet of them all.

At least, not according to Jets coach Rex Ryan, who says Darrelle Revis will be remembered as the best ever to put on a Jets uniform.

“One day we’re gonna say that this is the best Jet in the history of the New York Jet franchise, I believe that,” Ryan said as part of NFL Network’s look at Revis for its ongoing Top 100 players series. “And I think we’re gonna also see him in Canton one day.”

Ryan has previously called Revis the best player in the NFL, so high praise from coach to player is nothing new. But this takes it up another notch: Ryan is saying that Revis, who’s only 25 years old, is putting together a resume that will have him considered not only among the greats of his era, but among the greats of all time.

by Dennis Waszak Jr. - Jan.

by Dennis Waszak Jr. – Jan. 20, 2011 11:01 AM
Associated Press

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Darrelle Revis used to wonder if something like this would even be possible.

He’s considered by many to be the best shutdown cornerback in the NFL and has helped lead the New York Jets to the AFC championship game for the second straight season.

It’s a long way from those anxious days in Aliquippa, a city in metropolitan Pittsburgh where big dreams just help you get by.

“It’s a tough town,” Revis said Wednesday. “It makes you grow up fast. There’s a lot of negativity there.”

And, he saw plenty of it. Crimes, friends in trouble and people down on their luck. It was tough to stay focused.

“The one thing I did growing up is lean on the people doing positive things: Ty Law and my uncle, Sean Gilbert,” Revis recalled. “Mike Ditka’s from there. I remember just seeing billboards of him from our hometown and wanting to make it out of there.”

Well, he certainly succeeded. He was a star at the University of Pittsburgh, became a first-round pick of the Jets in 1997, and is headed for his third straight Pro Bowl. That is, if he’s not playing in the Super Bowl in a few weeks.

First, he’s coming back home – and hoping to leave with an AFC title and a huge win over the Steelers on Sunday night.

“It means a lot to me,” Revis said. “Jason Taylor is from there, too. We talk about it all the time. We played them a couple of weeks ago, and we were talking about just getting a win from where we’re from, and in front of our families and close friends. It’s the same situation. It’s the AFC championship game, but also it’s more personal to me and Jason Taylor.”

It was only a few months ago that Revis was a training-camp holdout with his complicated contract situation a lead story line on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” He eventually signed a new deal, reported to the team and was back in the starting secondary for the regular-season opener.

The lack of preparation meant he wasn’t close to being the type of player he was last season, though, when he shut down star wide receivers week after week. Then came a strained left hamstring that sidelined him for two games.

“Coming into the season, we all knew it was going to be a setback,” Revis said. “The coaches knew, (general manager) Mike Tannenbaum and those guys knew because I hadn’t been in football mode. I was trying to work out as much as I can and do what I needed to do to prepare myself, but it’s totally different when you’re not in training camp.”

Revis sets personal goals before each season and writes them down on a sheet of paper. They serve as a constant reminder for how good he knows he can be – and expects to be.

“Didn’t reach a lot of them this year,” Revis acknowledged. “But one of those goals is where we’re at right now, getting to this place we’re at, winning this game and going to the Super Bowl. I think that’s just a team goal as well for us, just getting here. Everybody’s mindset is just getting to the Super Bowl and winning.”

Revis has been a major factor in the Jets’ run. The health concerns are no longer an issue, and the contract situation is a distant memory. Revis has been at his best the last several weeks, shutting down Pittsburgh’s Hines Ward and Indianapolis’ Reggie Wayne, and teaming with Antonio Cromartie to take away Tom Brady’s favorite weapons last Sunday night.

Revis was asked by a reporter if he remembered the last time he was burned for a big play.

“I don’t,” Revis said, laughing. “What she said.”

It’s true, even if he can’t say the word. Revis rarely gets burned.

Ward might get another chance to change that Sunday – not that the Jets cornerback is giving away any of the game plan.

“If I’m supposed to be on Hines Ward the whole game, that’s my job,” Revis said. “If somebody else, Cromartie, is supposed to be on (Mike) Wallace or (Emmanuel) Sanders, then that’s his job, as well.”

Ward was held to two catches for 34 yards the last time the teams played, a 22-17 win by the Jets on Dec. 19.

“Revis is a great cornerback,” Ward said. “Can he be beat? Yeah, but he’s the kind of guy quarterbacks don’t want to mess around with. He’s a game-changer.”

Added Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger: “He absolutely is a stopper.”

Revis and the rest of the Jets defense are well aware of the unique challenge Roethlisberger poses, especially as a big guy – he’s 6-foot-5, 240 pounds – who can make plays on the run.

“We all know in here that Ben can extend plays,” Revis said. “The plays can last for 10 to 15 seconds. He’s good with his feet. He can scramble.”

Coach Rex Ryan is certainly happy he has Revis on his side at a time like this, with so much on the line.

“He’s the best in the business,” Ryan said. “Regardless of who we put him on, that’s probably not a good thing for that person.”

What do you guys think about this.
