| Slauson’s alert play and TD for Jets are… | |
The Denver Post’s NFL reporters post analysis, notes and more on this blog dedicated to the Denver Broncos.
It was a killer. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan listed several things that were killers to his team’s holding on to a victory Thursday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. But none of Ryan’s reasons measured up to the sinking feeling offensive guard Matt Slauson felt after quarterback Tim Tebow and the Broncos stormed back in the closing minutes to overtake the Jets 17-13. “It was like ‘ball,’ and I fell on it and rolled into the end zone,” Slauson said of his alert play that resulted in a fumble recovery and touchdown that put New York up 10-3 with 10:57 left in the third period. “I looked down and the ball was right at my feet,” Slauson said. “It was great at the time, but it doesn’t matter now.” The play started on a second-down run at the middle by Bilal Powell. He lost the ball on a hit by Denver linebacker Von Miller. But Slauson was on the spot. Slauson, who went to Air Academy High School outside of Colorado Springs, then on to Nebraska, knew his touchdown didn’t win the game, but he knew what did. “Denver’s defense won the game,” Slauson said. “They played a real tough game defensively.” On the other side of the Jets’ offensive line, Brandon Moore said the Broncos’ defense took away New York’s game plan. “We came in thinking we could run the ball,” Moore said. “We thought we could take advantage of running the ball.” The Jets managed 83 yards on the ground and no touchdowns. The key series came early in the fourth period when the Jets gained a first down at the Denver 31-yard line. Two incomplete passes by quarterback Mark Sanchez and Powell’s 4-yard run left the Jets with a fourth down at the Denver 27-yard line. Nick Folk’s 45-yard field goal put the Jets up 13-10 with 9:19 to play. The biggest killer among all those little killers for Ryan was the obvious — the 20-yard run by Tebow to win the game. “He’s tough to stop,” Ryan said of Tebow. “We knew that play was coming. You can laugh at what they do offensively, but it worked.” Irv Moss: 303-954-1296 or imoss@denverpost.com Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.
