The Philadelphia Eagles have plenty of reasons to be bitter at the New York Jets. First the Eagles destroyed the Jets on Dec. 18 to get their hopes up for a miracle playoff run, and then the Jets ruined that by losing to the New York Giants on Dec. 24. But while Philadelphia fans are stewing in disappointment, they can take solace in how New York fans – also like myself – are equally disappointed in their team.

The Jets have gone from potential Super Bowl contenders to playoff long shots in the span of just a few weeks. What’s more, New York has lived through this situation before – which pretty much triggered the Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez era to begin with.

Before Ryan and Sanchez arrived in 2009, New York was just coming off the end of its stint in the Brett Favre soap opera. In 2008, the Jets had Super Bowl hype around them when Favre came to town, but they started slowly with a 3-3 record. Likewise in 2011, the team stumbled out of the gate to a 2-3 start. Yet in midseason, the 2008 and 2011 squads got on a roll and looked ready to make a big run.

The 2008 team was a bit hotter, as it won five straight games to go to 8-3. And since the defending champion Giants only had one loss at the time, hype for an all-New York Super Bowl was building up. However, once the Jets got their eighth win everything started to fall apart – like it has for the 2011 edition.

The outcomes aren’t completely similar, since Favre’s Jets did at least get a ninth win while Sanchez’s team is still stuck at 8-7. But in both cases, they had chances to lock up playoff berths and utterly collapsed in the month of December. Favre ran out of gas and was more hobbled up than usual, three years before Sanchez completely crumbled against the Eagles and Giants.

The 2008 Jets got so bad in their final two losses that it triggered a full scale makeover, as Favre “retired” again, Eric Mangini was fired and the Ryan era was ready to begin. New York seemed to get the better end of that deal with two straight AFC title game appearances, yet Ryan and Sanchez have now reached the low point of their tenure.

If the 2011 Jets complete their collapse and miss the playoffs as well, it might not get Ryan and Sanchez out of town like the 2008 downfall did to Mangini and Favre. However, after three years of talk and bluster and no Super Bowls for Ryan, and after another season of regression from Sanchez, their time is starting to run out. After this, New York might not forgive another year or two with this kind of ending – or any other ending before the first week of February.

In 2009 and 2010, the Jets proved to be experts at ending a season on a hot streak. But in between , there have been a pair of pretty ugly Decembers that have kept New York from January. The consequences for the horrible ending of 2011 may not be as severe as the ones from 2008. Yet Ryan and Sanchez’s window of opportunity is getting smaller, and that might be severe enough before long.

Plaxico Burress had some of his most memorable moments with the New York Giants. From his Super Bowl-winning catch to his clashes with Tom Coughlin, there’s plenty of history there.

Now a member of the Jets, Burress is on the other side of the New York-area rivalry, with lots on the line Saturday for both teams. And the wide receiver intends to have a big game against his former teammates.

He said today that he wants to score “once, twice, maybe three or four times” on Saturday and is “going to go out and try to play lights-out football.”

Burress added a bit of a playful prediction, saying that the loser of the game will “wake up with a bittersweet Christmas, and it’s not going to be me.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Rex Ryan and the New York Jets want a win in the worst way. Three straight losses and rumblings about possible locker room disharmony have many fans and media speculating that the Jets could be on the verge of falling apart. It’s just Week 6, but New York’s game against the winless Miami Dolphins is being considered by many as a must-win — and Ryan remains confident his team can turn things around. “We haven’t performed to our expectations, our fans’ expectations and all that,” Ryan said. “We certainly understand that, but this season’s not over. And people want to throw some dirt on us, well, we can affect how this season ends.” On the surface, a 2-3 record is far from a near-crisis situation. But, the fact the jokes haven’t been flying as frequently from the usually brash Ryan and his bunch of chatterboxes fuels the feelings that this Jets team isn’t as loose as past groups. Getting back home after a brutal three-game stretch on the road could be exactly what New York needs. “I think Monday night is the time to definitely turn it around,” wide receiver Santonio Holmes said. “The spotlight’s on us, everybody’s watching. It’s time to really play some football and turn this organization around.” Except for the fact the Dolphins (0-4) are coming off a bye-week break and hungry for a win, too. “Quite honestly, you’re talking about a caged animal, so to speak, in the Miami Dolphins and they’re looking at one when they see us,” Ryan said. “Both teams have not performed to expectations and can’t wait to play this game, so it should be a physical game.” Just as most of the other matchups between these two AFC East rivals have been over the years. That includes “The Monday Night Miracle” in 2000 at the old Meadowlands, when the Jets stormed back from a 30-7 fourth-quarter deficit and beat the Dolphins 40-37 in overtime. Miami has also won both road games between the teams in Ryan’s first two seasons as New York’s coach. “When the Jets and Dolphins are playing, you can kind of throw out the record books sometimes,” said newly signed Dolphins quarterback Sage Rosenfels. “I know we’ve had a lot of success going up there and playing these last few years, it’s been some great rivalries. There’s a reason they put this game on Monday night because the entire Eastern seaboard is interested in this game.” It also might mean a little more than usual. For the Jets, it’s a chance to prove that the last three weeks — losses at Oakland, Baltimore and New England — were nothing more than a bump in their Super Bowl road and not the start of an ugly spiral. “Nobody feels desperate,” tight end Dustin Keller said. “We just have to stick to our game plan and stick to what we do individually, and that’s worked for us in the past.” For the Dolphins, it’s an opportunity for coach Tony Sparano to turn his team around after a miserable start. He’s already working without his starting quarterback after Chad Henne was lost for the season with a separated left shoulder. Matt Moore replaces Henne — for this week, at least. “There’s no pressure on him,” wide receiver Brandon Marshall said. “We’re under, under, under, under, under, under, under, underdogs. so there ain’t no pressure on anybody.” Moore will also become the 16th quarterback to start for the Dolphins since the Dan Marino era ended at the beginning of the 2000 season, the most among NFL teams in that span. “Obviously, Marino was a great one,” said Moore, who was 10-13 as a starter with Carolina. “It doesn’t matter who’s back there, the guy who’s going to make the plays and win ballgames ultimately is going to be the guy. Whether that’s 15 guys in 15 games, or one guy, they’re going to find the right guy.” Sparano’s job might depend on it. Miami is in danger of starting 0-5 for first time since losing its first 13 in 2007, en route to 1-15 season. There has also already been speculation about Sparano’s job security. “That’s a hard place to be, 0-5,” he said. Sparano says he has been through this before, including as an assistant for Marty Schottenheimer’s Washington Redskins in 2001. That team won eight of its last 11 to finish at .500, giving Sparano some hope for this Dolphins team. “It just takes a win to get yourself going and right now that’s all we’re worried about,” he said. “We’re worried about making our football team better, using this time to develop some of our players here and figure out how to win a game.” While the Dolphins’ offense is trying to regroup after the loss of their starting quarterback, the defense has perhaps been an even bigger disappointment. Miami is ranked 28th in overall defense, and 31st in passing defense — despite having two of the best young cornerbacks in the league in Vontae Davis, who missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, and Sean Smith. New York has had its share of problems on defense, too, giving up an unexpectedly large number of big runs and being anything but dominant. But the offense has been the consistent trouble spot, with Sanchez taking lots of hits behind an inconsistent offensive line, a running game that is slow to get going and a group of wide receivers still trying to jell with the quarterback. Sanchez has one less receiver this week after the Jets traded veteran Derrick Mason to the Houston Texans after not making as big an impact as expected. “We thought we had a pretty good group of guys here, and it’s unfortunate that the organization felt another way,” Holmes said. “We have to deal with the punches that are thrown at us and continue rolling.” Otherwise, the Jets could suddenly find themselves just a half-game ahead of the Dolphins in the standings. Not that Ryan is even entertaining any of those thoughts. In his mind, his team still has its sights set on the Super Bowl. “I can guarantee that we’re going to chase it, that’s for sure,” Ryan said. “Do I think we’ll win it? Yeah, absolutely.”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Rex Ryan and the New York Jets want a win in the worst way.

(Sports Network) – Maybe this is a good thing for the New York Jets.

Perhaps the team that’s reeling from two straight losses and burgeoning locker-
room dissension after a blemish-concealing 2-0 start, needs nothing more than a
return date with their biggest rival — the New England Patriots — to right
its collective ship.

Or maybe a trip to Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL’s most prolific offense
and a coaching staff that lives and breathes for the chance to humble Gang
Green, is the last place on Earth that Rex Ryan really wants to be come this
Sunday afternoon.

If the early-week pronouncements from the oft-bombastic New York head coach are
indicative, it’s the latter. With just a fleeting glimpse of former bravado.

“I’m subdued, but there’s probably a little more fire burning inside of me than
maybe I’m letting on,” Ryan said. “One thing about me, there’s a lot smarter
guys than me, but there’s nobody more competitive.”

Consecutive road losses to Oakland (34-24) and Baltimore (34-17) have even
prompted the third-year boss to retreat a bit from his preseason pronouncement
that the Jets are Super Bowl-bound.

New York and New England split two regular-season games last season before the
Jets won, 28-21, in a AFC Divisional Playoff at Gillette Stadium in January.

“I’m going to say this — right now we’re not going to the Super Bowl,” Ryan
said. “It’s at the quarter pole. We’re 2-2. We’re not even in the playoffs. How
can we get to the Super Bowl when we’re not even in the playoffs? But my
confidence in our football team? By the time we get to the finish line, we’ll
be right there. It’s not easy to make the playoffs, but I think that we’ll be
there.”

Of the two teams who’ll be in Foxborough Sunday, the hosts seem the surer bet
for the postseason right now.

New England finished the first quarter of its 2011 campaign at a workmanlike
3-1, running up calculator-bursting numbers while beating Miami, San Diego and
the Raiders and dropping a 65-point scorefest in Buffalo by a 34-31 count.

The output leaves the Patriots tied atop the AFC East with the Bills, a game
ahead of the sliding Jets and already four up on the headed-for-draft-day Miami
Dolphins.

“We’re excited to build on it,” quarterback Tom Brady said of last week’s 31-19
win at Oakland. “We’re so early in the season still. We’ve got a huge one this
weekend. This is one we’ve got to go get.

“I thought we did a great job balancing the game out (against the Raiders). For
the first time in four weeks, it was really a game that (running) was a big
part of what we were trying to accomplish. We were able to run the ball inside,
outside, all the different backs ran it and they ran it well. So that’s how you
become a great offense.”

SERIES HISTORY

The Jets hold a slim 51-49-1 edge in the all-time regular-season set between
the clubs but were handed a 45-3 loss in last year’s scheduled visit to
Gillette Stadium as New England avenged a 28-14 Week 2 defeat to New York at
the Meadowlands. Not counting the playoffs, the Jets have left with a defeat in
six of their last eight stops in Foxborough.

New England had won both previous postseason matchups with New York prior to
last January’s setback, delivering a 26-14 road upset in a 1985 AFC First-Round
Playoff and posting a 37-16 win at Gillette Stadium in a 2006 opening-round
tilt.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has a career record of 16-10 against the
Jets, for whom he served as defensive coordinator from 1997 through 1999, and
is 15-9 versus his one-time employers since arriving in New England in 2000.
Ryan sports a 3-2 mark against both the Patriots and Belichick, which includes
last January’s playoff ousting, since taking over as the Jets’ head coach in
2009.

WHEN THE JETS HAVE THE BALL

Including the postseason, the Jets are 3-0 when quarterback Mark Sanchez has a
100-plus passer rating against the Patriots. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson
needs five catches to become the fourth running back in NFL history with 600
receptions, joining Larry Centers (827), Marshall Faulk (767) and Keith Byars
(610). Including the playoffs, Tomlinson averages 83.7 rushing yards per game
(836 yards in 10 games) against New England. The Jets are 5-1 when wide
receiver Santonio Holmes has a TD catch in a game, while fellow wideout Derrick
Mason needs one receiving yard to become the 18th player in history to reach
12,000. In his past four games against the Patriots, wide receiver Plaxico
Burress has six touchdown catches, including a game-winning 13-yarder in Super
Bowl XLII while with the New York Giants during the 2007 season. Tight end
Dustin Keller is second among AFC players at the position with 261 receiving
yards, trailing only New Englands Rob Gronkowski (296), while kick returner
Joe McKnight had a franchise-record 107-yard return for a touchdown last week,
third-longest in NFL history.

The 12th overall pick by the Jets in the 2000 NFL Draft, Patriots defensive end
Shaun Ellis spent 11 seasons (2000-10) with New York before joining New England
in the offseason. Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has two interceptions
in his past three games, while safety Patrick Chung recorded his first
interception of the season last week. Fourth-year pro Jerod Mayo leads the
linebacking corps with 24 tackles and has a forced fumble, but suffered a knee
injury last week and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Offensively, the Jets are 11th in scoring (25.0 points per game), 25th in total
yards (308.0 yards per game), 16th in passing offense (237.0 ypg) and an
uncharacteristic 30th in rushing yards (71.0 ypg). On defense, the Patriots are
tied for 20th in scoring (24.5 ppg), dead in both total defense (477.5 ypg) and
passing yards allowed (368.8 ypg) and tied for 18th in rushing defense (108.8
ypg).

WHEN THE PATRIOTS HAVE THE BALL

Brady needs two touchdown passes to surpass Vinny Testaverde (275) for the
eighth-most in NFL history. He completed 21-of-29 passes (72.4 percent) for 326
yards, four touchdowns and a 148.9 passer rating in last December’s rout of the
Jets and has won 29 consecutive regular-season games at home, the longest
streak in NFL history. Since 2010, running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis ranks
second in the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns, trailing only Houston’s Arian
Foster (17). Rookie running back Stevan Ridley, a third-round pick in April’s
draft, had a career-high 97 rushing yards last week, including a 33-yard
scoring run. Wide receiver Wes Welker aims for a third straight game with 150-
plus receiving yards, following up a career-best 217-yard performance in the
Week 3 loss at Buffalo with 158 against the Raiders. He is averaging an NFL-
best 154 receiving yards per game this season (616 total). Gronkowski leads all
NFL tight ends with five touchdown catches in 2011.

Jets linebacker David Harris had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown
last week and had a 58-yarder for a score in the AFC Divisional Playoff win
over the Patriots in January. In his second year with the Jets, cornerback
Antonio Cromartie has a team-high two interceptions this season. Up front,
defensive end Mike DeVito has 13 tackles and a sack to lead the line.

The prolific Patriots are third in scoring offense (33.8 points per game),
first in total yards (507.5 yards per game) and passing yards (384.8 ypg) and
ninth in rushing offense (122.8 ypg). Defensively, the Jets are 15th in points
allowed (23.8 ppg), eighth in total yards surrendered (310.8 ypg), second in
pass defense (180.2 ypg) and 27th against the run (130.5 ypg).

KEYS TO THE GAME

Finding their signature running game is a high priority for the Jets, who’ve
plummeted to the league’s bottom tier in that category through four games.
Conveniently, the Patriots have been middle of the pack so far in defending the
run.

On the flip side, avoiding a shootout with Brady won’t be easy after the
reigning league MVP has ranked first in the league in passing yards and
touchdown and first in the conference in quarterback rating through the first
four weeks. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis versus Patriots wideout Chad
Ochocinco will be a marquee matchup, but the shifty Welker is dangerous as well
and must be held in check.

Injuries are a mounting concern for New York, which learned this week that
linebacker Bryan Thomas is out for the rest of the season with an Achilles’
tendon tear. New York must replace his presence with reserves Josh Mauga,
Jamaal Westerman and Aaron Maybin.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

It was a somewhat similar situation in 2010 for the Jets, who came off a Week 1
loss to the Ravens before turning things around with a 14-point win over New
England. Problem is, the bleeding appears far worse a season later, making a
dramatic turnaround that much more unlikely. Expect a fired-up Belichick to be
more than happy to shovel additional dirt on New York’s quickly-fading Super
Bowl hopes.

FLORHAM PARK, NJ (AP) -- Botched snaps, lousy throws and lots of turnovers. Throw in a sputtering running game and it all has New York Jets coach Rex Ryan steamin' mad

FLORHAM PARK, NJ (AP) — Botched snaps, lousy throws and lots of turnovers. Throw in a sputtering running game and it all has New York Jets coach Rex Ryan steamin’ mad.

This is certainly not what Ryan envisioned for his team. Two bad losses on the road and now the capper: a game against the rival New England Patriots.

“I’m bothered by the fact that I think we’re a better football team than we’re playing right now,” Ryan said. “We’re not executing as well as I thought we’d execute by now.”

Ryan let his team know that – on Sunday night after New York’s 34-17 loss at Baltimore, and again at the team meeting Monday.

“Last night was definitely kind of hurt, very emotionally hurt,” left guard Matt Slauson said when asked to describe Ryan’s mood.

And, Monday? Slauson said the brash coach was, well, pretty ticked off.

At his press conference, Ryan appeared more somber than usual, no smiles or jokes. It’s only Week 5, but it’s gut-check time for the Jets (2-2).

“It’s just something that’s on us as coaches, that’s on me,” Ryan said. “That’s why, to me, I’m subdued, but there is probably a little more fire burning inside of me than I’m letting on.”

There are plenty of improvements to be made, and the embarrassing loss to the Ravens provided some clear indicators that if the Jets plan to reach the AFC championship game – and beyond, as Ryan has promised – things need to get better fast.

“Guys are frustrated,” safety Jim Leonhard said. “You never want to lose games. You never want to lose back-to-back games. We realize we have a tough one coming up. It’s not getting any easier.”

Wide receiver Derrick Mason stood at his locker after getting beat by his former teammates and issued a challenge.

“Obviously, there are some things that need to change,” he said. “They have to change. It’s evident. You saw it, there are some cracks, and nobody really wants to identify the cracks. Until we identify the cracks, we’re going to keep having the same problems. Whenever somebody wants to fill up the cracks, then we can continue to move forward.”

What are the cracks? Well, take your pick. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes said it all starts with the offensive line, a shell of the once-dominant unit it had been. Of course, All-Pro center Nick Mangold has missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain, but the line isn’t protecting Mark Sanchez enough and not providing much running room.

“I don’t think he was calling us out maliciously at all because it is true,” Slauson said. “If we don’t do our jobs, no matter how good Mark is or the receivers are, they aren’t going to be able to anything. We have to be able to pick up the pressure so Mark can deliver him the ball and they can just run.”

Sanchez was under pressure all game and finished 11 of 35 for 119 yards with a hideously low 30.5 quarterback rating. Worse, he couldn’t protect the football. He had three of his turnovers returned for touchdowns, while the other set up a field goal by the Ravens.

“I don’t care if Joe Montana is back there, (with) that kind of pressure, it’s hard to execute,” Ryan said. “There were times when it was like, shoot, they weren’t backing off one bit and neither would I. They hit him. I think they had like 10 hits on the quarterback. He’s not going to make it through the season if he keeps getting hit 10 times a game.”

Ryan sarcastically suggested that the solution could be for the Jets to use seven offensive linemen if it helps keep Sanchez off his back.

Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath, who helped lead the franchise to its only Super Bowl title in 1969, has been critical of his former team the last few weeks. He said during his weekly appearance on 1050 ESPN Radio on Monday that this latest loss wasn’t all Sanchez’s fault. He pointed at several culprits, including the offensive line.

“Obviously, we don’t like it at all,” Slauson said. “I mean, especially since we in the past have been recognized as a strength, so it doesn’t feel good. But we aren’t going to falter. We’re just going to keep on working, keep on getting better and we’re going to be back. We’re going to be back very soon.”

Ryan insists that his “Ground-and-Pound” run-first approach on offense will also make a return. There has been too much throwing and not enough running for his liking.

“It’s no great secret that we need to be able to run the ball better,” he said.

Sure, Shonn Greene hasn’t done much in his first season as the lead back, running for just 157 yards and 3.1 yards a carry. But, Ryan’s not making any lineup changes yet.

“Shoot,” Ryan said, “how about we give Shonn Greene a chance?”

The Jets have been here before, as Slauson pointed out, hitting a rough patch during the past two seasons with many fans and media playing out the worst-case scenario. New York ended up making it within a game of the Super Bowl both times.

“Our confidence isn’t shot,” Slauson said. “It’s not gone and our season isn’t over by any means.”

Ryan wouldn’t put his team in the Super Bowl at this point, saying it’s too early to talk like that. But, he still believes his guys are headed to the postseason.

“By the time we get to the finish line,” Ryan said, “we’ll be right there.”

Although the Dallas Cowboys have long been known as “America’s Team,” the sentimental favorite tonight may very well be the Jets as the entire world turns toward New York today to remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

After the somber and emotional pregame events conclude at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., though, two of the organizations boasting some of the most bombastic characters in the NFL will take the field.

Rex Ryan’s Jets have reached back-to-back AFC Championship Games and are looking to finally reach the Super Bowl. For their part, the ‘Boys are just looking to regain contender status. And a large, physically and otherwise, reason they feel confident that they can accomplish that goal is Rex’s brother, Rob. The long-haired Ryan brother has come down to Dallas to take over the defense. But can Rob and the revamped Cowboys’ defense embarras Jets QB Mark Sanchez any more than those GQ photos?

Stay tuned here for live updates throughout the game and tweet to @HuffPostSports to join in the conversation.

Dallas Cowboys vs New York Jets Match Preview :

Cancer can’t keep Buddy Ryan from Cowboys vs Jets NFL regular Season . Not even cancer surgery can keep former NFL coach Buddy Ryan from being in the stands when his twin sons coach against each other Sunday night in the prime-time opener between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets.

Dallas Cowboys will play a 16-game season in 2011. That’s not news. The fact the importance of the days in between the weekend battles has increased just might be. Since Jason Garrett took the reins of the Cowboys after Wade Phillips was fired during the 2010 campaign, he’s stressed the importance of the daily grind.

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was trying to get some sleep early on Sept. 11, 2001 but the constant blare from the sirens that kept passing his Upper West Side apartment made that nearly impossible. A backup quarterback with the New York Giants at the time, Garrett had just returned home on an overnight flight from Denver after losing to the Broncos 31-20.

Jets have announced several plans to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks during the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, including Grammy-winning artist Mary J. Blige singing the national anthem.

Santonio Holmes was dropped on the New York Jets’ doorstep, his tattered baggage tucked under his arm. Inside was a four-game drug suspension, a rap sheet that included arrests in three states and, of course, his prized possession — the Super Bowl catch.

“This guy has won four playoff games in two years, all on the road,” Ryan said Thursday.

“This guy has won four playoff games in two years, all on the road,” Ryan said Thursday. “When you talk about elite quarterbacks, I think he’s an elite quarterback because he wins the big games and he’s a winner.”

Sanchez has four postseason victories, already a franchise record, and is tied with Len Dawson, Jake Delhomme, Joe Flacco and Roger Staubach for the most postseason road victories in NFL history. He and Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger are the only two quarterbacks in NFL history to reach the conference championship in their first two seasons.

Sanchez’s overall statistics in the regular season are mostly mediocre with his 54-percent completion percentage last year. His 75.3 quarterback rating last season was among the NFL’s lowest. So what, says Ryan.

“That’s all I want him to do, just win,” Ryan said. “Don’t worry about anything else. The stats will take care of themselves. Let’s just go out and win.”

Sanchez beat Indianapolis and Peyton Manning last season in the playoffs and then beat New England and Tom Brady, but Ryan stopped short of putting his quarterback in the same class.

“No, not those two,” Ryan said. “Those two have won Super Bowls. Peyton Manning’s won a Super Bowl and he’s won a zillion games and, in my opinion, is the best quarterback in football. And you have Tom Brady, who has only won three Super Bowls, been the MVP of the league three times.

“We’re a ways from there. There’s no doubt.”

Giants quarterback Eli Manning recently said he thinks he’s in the same class as Brady, particularly after leading New York to a Super Bowl victory.

“I certainly understand where Eli’s coming from,” Ryan said. “He’s been there and done it. He’s won a Super Bowl. He’s a great quarterback. Now, is he Tom Brady and Peyton? Probably not, but he’s pretty darn good. And, I think Mark Sanchez is pretty darn good.”

Ryan has talked all camp about Sanchez’s leadership skills and even named him a team captain. He pointed out, as an example, the fact that Sanchez, wide receiver Santonio Holmes and backup quarterback Greg McElroy returned home from their preseason opener at Houston at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and headed immediately to the gym to work out.

Sanchez appreciates all the praise, but realizes he still has plenty of work to do.

“On a national scale, that’s for people to debate and that’s fine,” he said. “As long as these guys understand what I’m all about. I think you have to do that first.”

Notes: Sanchez, who was razzed by his teammates for photos of him in the September issue of GQ magazine, said something good will come out of it. Sanchez is partnering with Hugo Boss, which provided the clothes in the shoot, to donate to the Tuesday’s Children charity. It benefits children affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. … LB Bart Scott thinks newly signed Aaron Maybin, a former first-round disappointment with the Bills, can thrive with the Jets. “We took the shackles off,” Scott said. “We told him he’s been serving a hard two-year bid up in Buffalo and now just got his release papers. It’s a breath of fresh air just from that.”

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – LaDainian Tomlinson looked around quizzically when asked if this year’s New York Jets were the NFL’s version of a dream team.

Tomlinson, who restructured his contract to help the Jets sign more players, then laughed and said the obvious:

“We don’t have LeBron, D-Wade or Chris Bosh on the team.”

Still, LT wasn’t dismissing the notion the Jets are among the Super Bowl favourites as the most unusual preseason in NFL history begins following the 4 1/2 month lockout. Nor was Jets coach Rex Ryan, who called this the best roster he’s had since coming to New York, holding back.

“In my mind, there’s a great opportunity for us to win and that’s the No. 1 thing, in my mind to be somewhere where we have a chance to win the Super Bowl,” Tomlinson said Monday after the team’s first workout, a slow-paced walkthrough in 90-degree temperatures. “I have said it all along (about restructuring) and this was my being able to prove the words I’ve said.”

As usual, there were lots of words escaping rapidly from Ryan and his players. Re-signed receiver Santonio Holmes echoed Ryan’s previous bold proclamations when the Jets were reaching the last two AFC championship games, and new receiver Plaxico Burress seconded the notion that this is a team on the rise.

“I’m pretty sure Coach will tell you the same thing that I’d probably tell you — we are the team to beat,” Holmes said. “But that’s for us to feel like, and that’s what we’re supposed to feel like when we go into any game, that no matter who steps on the field, you have to come and beat us because we know we’re tough.”

Added Burress, who hasn’t played since 2008 and spent much of the last two years in jail on a gun charge:

“I looked at what these guys have here. They have a great coach that everyone wants to play for in Rex. I want to be able to show loyalty from the other side and help take them to a championship.”

Ryan, sporting a new tribal-style tattoo on the side of his right calf, reiterated his belief this is the Jets’ year to win their first NFL title since the 1969 Super Bowl. He also issued a challenge to 30 other teams.

“I think we need to find someone else besides the Jets to beat the New England Patriots,” Ryan said, noting New England won the division the last two seasons, forcing the Jets to play all their playoff games on the road. “Are you good enough to beat the New England Patriots? I’m challenging the league.”

New York beat New England twice in 2010, including a second-round playoff game. To enhance their chances of overtaking the Patriots and making that final leap into the Super Bowl, several Jets reworked their contracts, allowing them to keep Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, grab Burress and even be in the sweepstakes to sign cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha until he landed in Philadelphia.

Other than Burress, the Jets’ core is relatively the same as in 2009. Ryan expects further growth from his key players, particularly Mark Sanchez, who he now calls “our leader” after making the quarterback a team captain.

“Part of it is based on what I think our leader is going to do, the strides I see him taking,” Ryan said.

Sanchez, 4-2 in playoff games, all on the road, says he welcomes the responsibility. Of course, what else would he say?

“As a third-year quarterback and team captain, it’s time to step up and convey to them what it means to be a Jet and to play like a Jet,” Sanchez said, mentioning the Yankees’ Derek Jeter as “the best captain you can think of in New York.”

“My improvement determines any kind of ceiling this team can have and our potential,” he added. “It’s time for me to step up my game.”

Notes: Ryan said recently re-signed Eric Smith will be a starter at safety opposite Jim Leonhard, replacing the departed Brodney Pool. … Burress will wear his old number, 17, a further indication WR Braylon Edwards won’t return … Cromartie was travelling early Monday and arrived just after the morning walkthrough ended. … In their flurry of weekend moves, the team signed cornerback Donald Strickland, who played for the team in 2009 but went to San Diego last season as a free agent.

… Burress will wear his old number, 17, a further indication WR Braylon Edwards won’t return … Cromartie was traveling early Monday and arrived just after the morning walkthrough ended. … In their flurry of weekend moves, the team signed cornerback Donald Strickland, who played for the team in 2009 but went to San Diego last season as a free agent.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A picture hangs in Bill McDermott’s basement that his son treasures more than any other.

It’s the one prominently displayed in the pool room of the family’s Philadelphia-area home with 18-year-old Michael McDermott posing next to New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“That was the first time I ever took my son to meet another executive or sports figure, and the first thing I asked Mike to do was to take a picture with my son,” said Bill McDermott, the co-CEO of SAP and a die-hard Jets fan. “Michael’s a huge fan as well and he just loves that picture.”

As a leader at one of the top providers of business software, McDermott has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in his field and shaken hands with a who’s who of sports figures: John Wooden, Ernie Els, Oscar Robertson and Gary Player, to name a few. A passion for sports runs deep in McDermott’s blood. After all, his late grandfather, Bobby, is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

So when an eager Tannenbaum called a few months ago to set up a meeting at SAP’s North American headquarters in Newtown Square, Pa., McDermott jumped at the chance to exchange thoughts on leadership and business philosophies.

“In running an organization, I think there are a lot of parallels, which is why I felt so fortunate that Bill allowed me to come down there and spend a few hours with him,” Tannenbaum said. “Ultimately, it’s about people, it’s about dreams and it’s about goals, and it may be business software or trying to win a Super Bowl, but I think there are more parallels than there aren’t.”

The three-hour meeting in late-May spawned an instant friendship between one man who has led his company to five straight quarters of double-digit economic growth since taking over and another who hopes to deliver on his team’s goal of winning a long-awaited second Super Bowl title — and first since McDermott rooted for Broadway Joe as a kid growing up in New York.

“I’ve never enjoyed any meeting, on an interpersonal level, more than my meeting with Mike Tannenbaum,” McDermott said by phone from Germany, where SAP’s global headquarters is located. “Not one. That’s saying something.”

The praise is mutual.

“Bill’s a remarkable guy who has walked with giants,” Tannenbaum said. “I know I’m better off because of that meeting.”

McDermott and Tannenbaum were so comfortable with each other, that a few minutes in, the talk turned to McDermott suggesting what Tannenbaum could do to improve the roster.

“Mike actually humored me and was interested in my opinion,” said a laughing McDermott, who watched the AFC championship game against Pittsburgh while he was in China by using Slingbox.

As an NFL general manager, the 42-year-old Tannenbaum knows better than to be complacent. That’s why he has reached out to several top business executives during the past few offseasons. He has met with Kevin Plank, the CEO and founder of Under Armour; Frank Bisignano, the chief administrative officer at J.P. Morgan Chase; and even three-time national title-winning coach Jim Calhoun of the University of Connecticut. Tannenbaum also has been able to glean leadership skills for years from his own boss, Jets owner Woody Johnson, whose family founded Johnson & Johnson.

“I’ve filled up yellow pads with information, things I’ve learned from everyone I’ve met with,” Tannenbaum said. “I have an affirmative obligation to Woody and the franchise that, are we doing everything we possibly can to be the best franchise in the world? I really did look at the NFL lockout as an opportunity to get out of our comfort zones and get out of our routines. This was an opportunity for us to get better.”

Since Tannenbaum took over as GM in 2006, the Jets have been to the playoffs three times — including reaching the AFC championship the past two seasons with Rex Ryan as coach.

“You look at our stadium, look at this facility, look at Rex and look at Mark Sanchez,” Tannenbaum said. “The foundation is there to truly be the golden era of this franchise and I want us to leave footprints for a long, long time. That’s our goal.”

Tannenbaum will have plenty of big decisions to make when the lockout ends. The Jets have several big-name players scheduled to become free agents, including Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Antonio Cromartie, and McDermott has already, of course, presented Tannenbaum his wish list.

“I would advise any of the players, if you want my true gut opinion on this, to not screw around for small change when you’ve got a chance to play for the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets” said McDermott, throwing in his own Namath and Ryan-like guarantee. “That’s something you can carry around with you for a lifetime, long after you’ve blown a lot of cash. So, if I was advising any of these players, I’d say they should re-sign with Mike Tannenbaum as quickly as you can.”

As New York Jets coach Rex Ryan endures a lockout that’s infringing on his ability to work toward backing up his “guarantee” of a Super Bowl title next season, he’s turning to the master of work-stoppage success.

“I called Joe Gibbs,” Ryan told a small group of prospective Jets business partners Wednesday night at The Core Club in Manhattan, according to the team’s official website. “When they went through some work stoppages, the last two times the Washington Redskins won two Super Bowls. So I figured that would be a good guy to call.”

Gibbs led the Redskins to the Super Bowl title following a strike-shortened 1982 season, beating the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. Five years later, the Redskins won Super Bowl XXII, routing the Denver Broncos 42-10 after a 24-day players’ strike trimmed the regular season to 15 games, three of them with replacement players.

Gibbs’ Redskins went 3-0 with the replacements en route to an 11-4 finish.

Ryan says he plans to meet in the next few days with Gibbs, who guided the Redskins to three Super Bowl titles and four NFC championships in 16 seasons as the team’s head coach, and that he’s already absorbing some of the Hall of Famer’s advice.

“He said take this time to get better,” Ryan said. “Take time to gain an advantage on your opponents and whatever you think that is. He gave me some ideas, and I followed them to a T.”

Ryan says that to improve his and his staff’s knowledge base he’s been “bringing in all kinds of guys to come in here and speak to us and pick their brains,” including former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore, legendary running backs coach Bobby Jackson, and Dan Reeves, the former head coach of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.

Moore, whose Colts offense had great success inside the 20, is working with the Jets on red-zone efficiency, which Ryan called “the biggest area we have to improve.”

“Over the last six-year period, the Indianapolis Colts have been by far and away the most efficient offense in the red zone,” Ryan said. “And this man has been the coach. It was interesting picking his brain. He’s really helping us.”

Ryan’s boast in February that the Jets will win the Super Bowl next season has the support of his players. And of his owner, too.

“It’s hard to lead people if you don’t tell them where you’re going,” said Woody Johnson, who also appeared at the event. “If you tell people, ‘I’m coming in 15th. Are you with me?’ No, I’m not with you. I’m not going to sign on.”

NEW YORK

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, while making yet another guarantee that his side would win the next Super Bowl, compared himself to baseball great Babe Ruth, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

According to legend, Ruth pointed to the center-field bleachers during his at-bat in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series and on the next pitch hit a home run to exactly that point for the New York Yankees.

Ryan said he was doing the same thing by predicting the Super Bowl win.

“It’s like he had the courage to do that. I think I’ve got the courage,” Ryan said.

“Now granted, I can’t hit anywhere close to Babe Ruth and I’m not as good a coach as Babe Ruth was a player, but I still feel the same way.

“I still feel like [we will win], why wouldn’t I say it? It’s easier for me to say it because I have people with me.

“Babe Ruth had to walk up there by himself. But if everything was up to me and that we were going to win [if] I’d hit one out, I believe myself I’m going to hit it out.

“More importantly, I believe in everybody — our players, our coaches, the fan base we have established here, everybody in the organization.”

Ryan said at the start of the 2009 playoffs that the Jets should be the favorites for the title, but his team fell in the AFC title game. Then in 2010 he predicted from the start that the Jets would win the Super Bowl, but they again lost in the AFC title game.

“How am I crying wolf?” Ryan added. “We built a perennial winner. Now we’ve just got to find a way to get it done. All I want is to win two more games.”

What are your opinions.
