A golden plan

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A picture hangs in Bill McDermott’s basement that his son treasures more than any other.

It’s the one prominently displayed in the pool room of the family’s Philadelphia-area home with 18-year-old Michael McDermott posing next to New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“That was the first time I ever took my son to meet another executive or sports figure, and the first thing I asked Mike to do was to take a picture with my son,” said Bill McDermott, the co-CEO of SAP and a die-hard Jets fan. “Michael’s a huge fan as well and he just loves that picture.”

As a leader at one of the top providers of business software, McDermott has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in his field and shaken hands with a who’s who of sports figures: John Wooden, Ernie Els, Oscar Robertson and Gary Player, to name a few. A passion for sports runs deep in McDermott’s blood. After all, his late grandfather, Bobby, is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

So when an eager Tannenbaum called a few months ago to set up a meeting at SAP’s North American headquarters in Newtown Square, Pa., McDermott jumped at the chance to exchange thoughts on leadership and business philosophies.

“In running an organization, I think there are a lot of parallels, which is why I felt so fortunate that Bill allowed me to come down there and spend a few hours with him,” Tannenbaum said. “Ultimately, it’s about people, it’s about dreams and it’s about goals, and it may be business software or trying to win a Super Bowl, but I think there are more parallels than there aren’t.”

The three-hour meeting in late-May spawned an instant friendship between one man who has led his company to five straight quarters of double-digit economic growth since taking over and another who hopes to deliver on his team’s goal of winning a long-awaited second Super Bowl title — and first since McDermott rooted for Broadway Joe as a kid growing up in New York.

“I’ve never enjoyed any meeting, on an interpersonal level, more than my meeting with Mike Tannenbaum,” McDermott said by phone from Germany, where SAP’s global headquarters is located. “Not one. That’s saying something.”

The praise is mutual.

“Bill’s a remarkable guy who has walked with giants,” Tannenbaum said. “I know I’m better off because of that meeting.”

McDermott and Tannenbaum were so comfortable with each other, that a few minutes in, the talk turned to McDermott suggesting what Tannenbaum could do to improve the roster.

“Mike actually humored me and was interested in my opinion,” said a laughing McDermott, who watched the AFC championship game against Pittsburgh while he was in China by using Slingbox.

As an NFL general manager, the 42-year-old Tannenbaum knows better than to be complacent. That’s why he has reached out to several top business executives during the past few offseasons. He has met with Kevin Plank, the CEO and founder of Under Armour; Frank Bisignano, the chief administrative officer at J.P. Morgan Chase; and even three-time national title-winning coach Jim Calhoun of the University of Connecticut. Tannenbaum also has been able to glean leadership skills for years from his own boss, Jets owner Woody Johnson, whose family founded Johnson & Johnson.

“I’ve filled up yellow pads with information, things I’ve learned from everyone I’ve met with,” Tannenbaum said. “I have an affirmative obligation to Woody and the franchise that, are we doing everything we possibly can to be the best franchise in the world? I really did look at the NFL lockout as an opportunity to get out of our comfort zones and get out of our routines. This was an opportunity for us to get better.”

Since Tannenbaum took over as GM in 2006, the Jets have been to the playoffs three times — including reaching the AFC championship the past two seasons with Rex Ryan as coach.

“You look at our stadium, look at this facility, look at Rex and look at Mark Sanchez,” Tannenbaum said. “The foundation is there to truly be the golden era of this franchise and I want us to leave footprints for a long, long time. That’s our goal.”

Tannenbaum will have plenty of big decisions to make when the lockout ends. The Jets have several big-name players scheduled to become free agents, including Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Antonio Cromartie, and McDermott has already, of course, presented Tannenbaum his wish list.

“I would advise any of the players, if you want my true gut opinion on this, to not screw around for small change when you’ve got a chance to play for the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets” said McDermott, throwing in his own Namath and Ryan-like guarantee. “That’s something you can carry around with you for a lifetime, long after you’ve blown a lot of cash. So, if I was advising any of these players, I’d say they should re-sign with Mike Tannenbaum as quickly as you can.”

Jets coach Ryan takes tips from Gibbs on navigating lockout

As New York Jets coach Rex Ryan endures a lockout that’s infringing on his ability to work toward backing up his “guarantee” of a Super Bowl title next season, he’s turning to the master of work-stoppage success.

“I called Joe Gibbs,” Ryan told a small group of prospective Jets business partners Wednesday night at The Core Club in Manhattan, according to the team’s official website. “When they went through some work stoppages, the last two times the Washington Redskins won two Super Bowls. So I figured that would be a good guy to call.”

Gibbs led the Redskins to the Super Bowl title following a strike-shortened 1982 season, beating the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. Five years later, the Redskins won Super Bowl XXII, routing the Denver Broncos 42-10 after a 24-day players’ strike trimmed the regular season to 15 games, three of them with replacement players.

Gibbs’ Redskins went 3-0 with the replacements en route to an 11-4 finish.

Ryan says he plans to meet in the next few days with Gibbs, who guided the Redskins to three Super Bowl titles and four NFC championships in 16 seasons as the team’s head coach, and that he’s already absorbing some of the Hall of Famer’s advice.

“He said take this time to get better,” Ryan said. “Take time to gain an advantage on your opponents and whatever you think that is. He gave me some ideas, and I followed them to a T.”

Ryan says that to improve his and his staff’s knowledge base he’s been “bringing in all kinds of guys to come in here and speak to us and pick their brains,” including former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore, legendary running backs coach Bobby Jackson, and Dan Reeves, the former head coach of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.

Moore, whose Colts offense had great success inside the 20, is working with the Jets on red-zone efficiency, which Ryan called “the biggest area we have to improve.”

“Over the last six-year period, the Indianapolis Colts have been by far and away the most efficient offense in the red zone,” Ryan said. “And this man has been the coach. It was interesting picking his brain. He’s really helping us.”

Ryan’s boast in February that the Jets will win the Super Bowl next season has the support of his players. And of his owner, too.

“It’s hard to lead people if you don’t tell them where you’re going,” said Woody Johnson, who also appeared at the event. “If you tell people, ‘I’m coming in 15th. Are you with me?’ No, I’m not with you. I’m not going to sign on.”

There is the quick update of the day.

Report: Ryan compares himself to Ruth

Updated Mar 22, 2011 1:28 AM ET

NEW YORK

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, while making yet another guarantee that his side would win the next Super Bowl, compared himself to baseball great Babe Ruth, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

According to legend, Ruth pointed to the center-field bleachers during his at-bat in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series and on the next pitch hit a home run to exactly that point for the New York Yankees.

Ryan said he was doing the same thing by predicting the Super Bowl win.

“It’s like he had the courage to do that. I think I’ve got the courage,” Ryan said.

“Now granted, I can’t hit anywhere close to Babe Ruth and I’m not as good a coach as Babe Ruth was a player, but I still feel the same way.

“I still feel like [we will win], why wouldn’t I say it? It’s easier for me to say it because I have people with me.

“Babe Ruth had to walk up there by himself. But if everything was up to me and that we were going to win [if] I’d hit one out, I believe myself I’m going to hit it out.

“More importantly, I believe in everybody — our players, our coaches, the fan base we have established here, everybody in the organization.”

Ryan said at the start of the 2009 playoffs that the Jets should be the favorites for the title, but his team fell in the AFC title game. Then in 2010 he predicted from the start that the Jets would win the Super Bowl, but they again lost in the AFC title game.

“How am I crying wolf?” Ryan added. “We built a perennial winner. Now we’ve just got to find a way to get it done. All I want is to win two more games.”

What are your opinions.

No Jets On ‘Hard Knocks’

NewsCore – The New York Jets will not be doing another version if their HBO series “Hard Knocks” in 2011, but the network would welcome an encore at some point, the New York Post reported late Saturday.

“We will give [coach Rex Ryan] and the Jets the year off from ‘Hard Knocks.’ But you never know what the future holds,” HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said.

“It took many years before there was a ‘Star Wars’ sequel. Hopefully someday Rex and the New York Jets will be back on HBO.”

Ryan on Thursday told NFL Network he did not think the team would be picked again for the behind-the-scenes, training camp reality show.

“I think we’re done with it,” Ryan said from the league’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The Jets made headlines weekly during their five-episode run last summer, which started with a memorable, profanity-filled speech about the Jets reaching the Super Bowl. They fell one game short again, losing in the AFC Championship to the Steelers.

Rex Ryan ‘knows’ that the Jets will win Super Bowl XLVI

You’re not going to believe this, but New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has expressed a great deal of confidence in his football team.

While taking in a Knicks game over the weekend, Rex offered up his prediction for next season (should it exist).

The Gang Green coach told the [New York] Post “there’s no way we don’t get it done next year,” and said to MSG’s Jill Martin at halftime that “next year I know we’ll win it.”

Hey, why not? In his first two years on the job, Rex has been to two AFC Championship games. Clearly, his “Look how great we are!” strategy is effective.

If he wants to wake up every day and predict that Mark Sanchez(notes) will win 11 Super Bowls, a Nobel Prize for mathematics and the Grammy for best new female artist, then he can go right ahead. His previous two predictions of Jets Super Bowl victories (this is kind of an annual tradition for him) have come up short, but hey, calling Super Bowl winners is difficult.

Not everyone agrees with Rex, of course. The NFL Network’s Charles Davis(notes) believes that the Jets will be one of the teams to slip out of the playoffs in 2012, and Vegas will tell you that the Jets have about a one in sixteen chance of winning the whole enchilada.

What do you guys think about this.

GRAPEVINE, Texas — Mark Sanchez ended several weeks of speculation about his injured throwing shoulder, delivering a final verdict Thursday night — no surgery.

The New York Jets quarterback, who underwent an MRI exam the day after the AFC Championship Game, said he received the news this week from Jets doctor Ken Montgomery, who consulted with shoulder specialists.

Sanchez said he was “absolutely” relieved to hear the news; the last thing he wanted was another offseason of rehabilitation. A year ago, he spent most of the offseason rehabbing from knee surgery.

“They were just really pleased with the way things have healed,” Sanchez told five reporters before a promotional appearance at a resort hotel. “The swelling and bruising type stuff is gone, so they’re really happy about that. … That’s good news.”

The Jets finished one win shy of the Super Bowl. With a busy offseason looming, let us know who should stay and who should go. Vote Now!

Sanchez is planning to have one more shoulder exam with the team doctor before March 3, the day before a possible lockout would begin. In the meantime, he said the doctors prescribed “active rest,” meaning a regimen of rehab exercises and stretching. He threw lightly earlier this week.

“[Montgomery] said it’s not going to be a sit-around-and-see-how-you-feel-in-August-type thing,” said Sanchez, relaxed and in good spirits. “I said of course not. I’m committed to the team, number one. I’ll do everything I can mentally and physically to be ready to play, and I know I will.”

Sanchez hurt his shoulder Dec. 19 at Pittsburgh, although he never missed a play. He underwent an MRI exam the following day. For the remainder of the season, the team referred to it as a “sore” shoulder.

Sanchez battled through the injury for the next five games, including three postseason starts. He admitted “it was painful, but nothing I couldn’t handle.” He was limited in practice, but he actually played well with the injury. He said he didn’t take any painkilling injections.

With a possible lockout looming, Sanchez said he will look to organize informal workouts with teammates, perhaps a reprisal of the “Jets West” camp he hosted last offseason near his home in Southern California.

Sanchez arrived in the North Texas area for a whirlwind of pre-Super Bowl activities. He admitted it was weird to be so close to the Super Bowl site after falling one game short. He issued a quasi-guarantee for 2011.

“We expect to be right where we were, and one game further,” he said, adding, “It was weird, just seeing the Super Bowl logo everywhere, seeing the Steelers’ logo. It’s like, ‘Man, we were so close.’”

Jets QB Sanchez won’t need surgery on shoulder

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP)—Mark Sanchez(notes) won’t need surgery on his injured right shoulder.

The New York Jets quarterback said Thursday doctors told him rest and a mild rehabilitation would be enough to return the shoulder to full strength.

Sanchez was injured when the Jets won at Pittsburgh on Dec. 19, but the shoulder wasn’t a factor in New York’s run to the AFC championship game. The Jets lost the title game to the Steelers, who play Green Bay in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The Jets won road playoff games at Indianapolis and Green Bay, and Sanchez has already tied the NFL record with four postseason road wins in his first two seasons.
