If the New York Jets are going to make the 2011 NFL playoffs, they will probably need a win in Week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs to pad their numbers before the final three games of the season against the talented Eagles, similarly desperate Giants, and red-hot Dolphins. A slew of bumps and bruises might not help.

16 Jets appear on their Week 14 injury report, and LaDainian Tomlinson, Shonn Greene, David Harris, and Nick Mangold are among the players on the list. None of them are listed as out, a good sign, but having that many dings to deal with is definitely not a good sign.

Here’s the rest of the Jets injury report for Week 14:

OUT: none.

The New York Jets appear relatively healthy entering a Week 13 meeting with the Washington Redskins.

Defensive end Mike DeVito will miss the game with a sprained MCL, but nobody else on the Jets roster is considered doubtful or questionable.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson is expected to return to the lineup after missing the previous two games with an MCL sprain. He injured the knee during Week 10 against the New England Patriots, when Julian Edelman tackled Tomlinson in the fourth quarter. Rex Ryan said Tomlinson looked “fresh as can be” during Thursday’s practice.

Running back Shonn Greene (ribs), offensive lineman Vlad Ducasse, defensive lineman Marcus Dixon (shoulder), wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (knee), offensive lineman Nick Mangold (ankle), linebacker Calvin Pace (groin), safety Brodney Pool (knee) and offensive lineman Matt Slauson (knee) are all listed as probable.

The Redskins will be missing safety LaRon Landry, who’s out with a groin injury.

The New York Jets’ injury report is long, but it isn’t filled with many players who will miss Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos. The only Jets player listed as out for the game is safety Brodney Pool.

LaDainian Tomlinson remains the biggest question mark on the roster. He didn’t practice on Tuesday, but head coach Rex Ryan hasn’t officially ruled him out yet. If he travels with the team on Wednesday, he will be a game-time decision on Thursday night. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley and Patrick Turner also failed to practice on Tuesday and former Bronco practice squad player Eron Riley could be part of the receiving corps should either be unable to go.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis made an appearance on the injury list with a knee injury. Outside of Shawn Nelson, who didn’t practice on Tuesday, everyone else on the injury report either stayed at full practice or moved up to that level.

New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson has a sprained left-knee ligament that may force him
to miss the team’s Nov. 17 game in Denver.

Tomlinson, the Jets’ second-leading rusher, was injured
during the Jets’ 37-16 loss to the New England Patriots on Nov.
13 and missed practice today. Even with a short week to recover,
Jets coach Rex Ryan said he isn’t counting Tomlinson out of the
National Football League game against the Broncos.

“He’s trying to do everything in his power to play,” Ryan
said today during a news conference. “If he thinks he can help
the team, then he’s going to go. Obviously you have to protect
the player from himself as well, so you have to lean on your
trainers and your medical advice.”

Tomlinson, 32, has rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown,
while catching 25 passes out of the backfield for 312 yards and
a score. Ryan said wide receivers Jeremy Kerley and Patrick Turner also missed practice today because of injuries and their
availability this week may be a game-time decision.

New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer says it’s time for Shonn Greene to step up as the team’s primary ballcarrier, and he believes his third-year running back is prepared for the challenge.

“Shonn’s ready to take that next step,” Schottenheimer told the New York Daily News on Friday. “He’s just gotten better year in and year out. His durability (last season) was outstanding. You just see the confidence in his eyes. His ability to pick up pass-protection stuff has been terrific the last couple years.

“We expect a breakout season from him. He’s a guy that’s got just huge, huge, huge potential that we think is right there ready for him to grab.”

Greene has rushed for 1,306 yards on just 293 carries in two seasons with the Jets, sharing responsibilities with Thomas Jones in 2009 and LaDainian Tomlinson last year. But Schottenheimer said Greene “without a doubt” will receive the opportunity to carry the ball about 20 times per game next season.

Greene demonstrated his durability late last season, taking more carries than Tomlinson in eight of the Jets’ last 10 games, including all three playoff contests. Greene had just three games with 18 or more rushes, but Tomlinson said last month at quarterback Mark Sanchez’s “Jets West” players-only minicamp that he’s ready for a third-down role. That means Greene would take most of the carries.

Tomlinson had nearly half the Jets’ carries in 2010 and led the team with 914 yards.

“Even toward the latter part of the season, (Shonn) got a lot of the work just because he had the hot hand,” Schottenheimer told the newspaper. “When Shonn is on his game and running hard, there’s not a single defensive player, including linebackers and defensive linemen, that want to see him coming with a full head of steam at them.”

The Jets have five running backs on their roster — Joe McKnight, John Conner and rookie Bilal Powell are the others — and need to figure out ball distribution.

“You can never have enough good players at that position,” said Schottenheimer, who added: “I don’t think we need to decide anything (about who will be active) just yet. Because there’s so many things that come into the back part of the roster on game day in terms of special teams. I think it’s hard to make that prediction now.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

It is being reported today that the New York Jets will bring LaDainian Tomlinson back in 2011 to finish out the two year contract he signed with the team. Despite returning, it is being anticipated that Tomlinson will take on more of a complimentary role in the Jets offense next season. Shonn Greene is expected to be given the chance he never received in 2010 to be the feature back and second year back Joe McKnight’s role will increase in the offense.

Another item of news released today that isn’t all that surprising is that second year fullback John Conner will take over as the starter. Conner spent the year learning behind veteran Tony Richardson last season but showed enough potential to merit a chance to become a full time player. It is expected that Richardson will retire after a lengthy, successful career.

Thoughts: No surprises here. The interesting thing to watch will be how Tomlinson handles a lesser role in the offense and if Greene is truly capable of receiving around 20 carries on a weekly basis. Hopefully, McKnight learned from his brutal rookie campaign and will be ready to take on a bigger role, as he is groomed by Tomlinson to be the team’s long term third down and change of pace back.

“I would definitely like to play, no question,” Tomlinson, 31, said Wednesday night at a fundraiser for his charitable foundation. “Really and truly, I’m under contract, and I fully expect to play football with the Jets next year. Until I’m told otherwise, I just expect to be there.”

Tomlinson, who turns 32 in June, is due to make $2.4 million in the final season of his contract. There has been speculation about his future because the Jets have two young running backs, Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight. General manager Mike Tannenbaum indicated last week he expects Tomlinson to be back, but he left a hint of doubt by saying “things could change.”

Tomlinson believes he’s wanted, based on “all indications” from the organization. Rebounding from a disappointing 2009 with the San Diego Chargers, he rushed for a team-high 914 yards and caught 51 passes in his first season with the Jets.

As optimistic as he was about his own future, Tomlinson was down on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, who fired Wade Phillips during the season and finished 6-10.

“In my opinion, I think the guys quit playing for Wade,” said Tomlinson, who grew up in nearby Waco and rooted for the Cowboys. “At some point, there was a disconnect, and that happens. It absolutely happens. When guys disconnect from the head coach, they just don’t want to play for him anymore. You saw when Jason Garrett took over, they responded. That told me they just quit on Wade.

“I don’t know what happened. Maybe something went on privately there, but it was something that happened. [Cowboys owner/GM] Jerry Jones had to make a move, and they responded to Jerry.”

This week could’ve been a storybook homecoming for Tomlinson, a local icon who played college ball at TCU. He’s never played in a Super Bowl, and he wanted so badly to play in Cowboys Stadium.

“I’m still in a little bit of a funk,” he said, alluding to the 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It was heartbreaking, to be honest with you. I wanted this. I know my family and my fans wanted this, to come back home … It would’ve been such a dream come true.”

Tomlinson lamented the brutal first half, in which the Jets fell behind 24-0.

What a difference 41 days makes.

Nearly six weeks after the Jets humbling 45–3 loss at New England, the New York Jets returned to the scene of the crime and shocked the NFL with a determined 28–21 win over the AFC East Champion and top seed in the conference New England Patriots.

“It was a team effort and we got it done today,” said Jets running back and twice-victimized-in-the-playoffs-by-the-Patriots LaDainian Tomlinson in an interview with CBS right after the game.

The Jets, using an array of different looks on defense, were able to frustrate and slow own the Patriots offense for most of the day in winning their fourth road playoff game during Rex Ryan’s short tenure at the Meadowlands.

If the final score was any indication of how well they played, the first quarter showed few hints that this game would turn out any differently than the last time they played.

Picking up right where they left off, the Jets punted after getting just one first down on their first possession of the game and then watched New England march 56 yards in seven plays, setting up a first and 10 at the Jets 28.

But, just as all the momentum was in the Patriots favor, the Jets defense struck back with a David Harris 58-yard interception return that took the Jets to the Patriots 12-yard line. The Jets offense, though, got nowhere in three plays and settled for a Nick Folk 30-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide of the uprights, keeping the game scoreless.

The Patriots took over and promptly drove 56 more yards on 11 plays, this time settling for a Shayne Graham 34-yard field goal as tight end Alge Crumpler dropped a sure touchdown catch on second down from the Jets 7-yard line.

After one quarter of play the Patriots had eight first downs and 112 yards to the Jets 2 and 36 respectively. They led 3–0, but the Jets had sacked Brady twice and forced his first interception since October.

Jets Key In

Starting with the second quarter, the Jets defense put the clamps on the Tom Brady and the Patriots offense as they generated only one first down in their four second quarter possessions.

Meanwhile, the Jets offense was able to find enough cracks in New England’s defense to take a 7–3 lead with 10:24 left in the first half as Sanchez calmed down enough to find Tomlinson for a 7-yard touchdown catch. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

About his touchdown catch Tomlinson said, “We had worked that play a lot, it didn’t matter to me where the ball was, I was going to make a play.”

After the teams traded punts, the Patriots lined up to punt again, only to fake the snap to safety Pat Chung who fumbled the ball, recovered it, and was brought down for no gain. The Jets took over at the New England 37.

Four plays and 33 seconds later the Jets found the end zone as Braylon Edwards fought his way in for the score, giving the Jets a 14–3 lead going into halftime.

Brady found Crumpler for a touchdown, and after a successful two-point conversion, the Jets lead was cut to 14–11 with seconds left in the third quarter.

The Jets offense responded right away on the first play of the fourth quarter. Mark Sanchez found wide receiver Jericho Cotchery for a 58-yard pass that gave the Jets a first down at the New England 13-yard line.

Three plays later Santonio Holmes extended the Jets lead to 21–11 with his amazing over-the-shoulder touchdown catch, which brought back memories of his Super Bowl winning grab with the Steelers.

The now desperate New England offense started marching down the field and found themselves with a first down at the Jets 31-yard line before Shaun Ellis stopped Patriots running back Danny Woodhead for no gain.

Then Jets defensive tackle Sione Pouha sacked Tom Brady for one of five Jets sacks to force a third and long they wouldn’t convert.

The Jets, unable to gain a first down, punted it back to the Patriots’ Julian Edelman who returned it 41 yards to the Jets 43-yard line, setting a Shayne Graham 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-14 with 1:57 remaining.

The Patriots tried the onside kick right down the heart of the Jets hands team and, after a short scramble for the ball, Antonio Cromartie daringly picked it up and ran it 23 yard to the New England 25-yard line.

The Jets Shonn Greene ran it in two plays later giving the Jets a 28–14 lead and after a late Patriots touchdown and another similar unsuccessful onside kick the Jets ran out the clock and celebrated their 28–21 win.

Up next for the Jets is a rematch of their Week 15 matchup at the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets won that encounter 22–17 against the mighty Steelers defense. The game will be played Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. EST.

INDIANAPOLIS – New York Jets [team stats] coach Rex Ryan said he was taking his playoff opener against the Indianapolis Colts personally.

Ryan is one of the best defensive minds in the game, and he has built some of the best defenses in recent years in Baltimore and New York. But try as he might, Ryan has not been able to beat Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

Until Saturday night. Ryan found a defensive plan to control Manning – keep him on the sideline. His elaborate game of keepaway produced a 17-16 upset of the Colts.

Manning, who has engineered 46 come-from-behind victories in his career, appeared to pick up No. 47 when he drove the Colts 48 yards in eight plays for a 50-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri with 53 seconds remaining in regulation.

But a 47-yard kickoff return by Antonio Cromartie set the Jets up near midfield, and two passes by Mark Sanchez for 30 yards put Nick Folk in range for the game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Manning was 5-1 in his career against Ryan, with two playoff victories, one when Ryan was defensive coordinator of the Ravens in 2006 and the other in the AFC title game last season against the Jets.

The only game Manning lost to Ryan came in the 15th game of the 2009 season. Indianapolis was 14-0, and the Colts decided to rest Manning in the third quarter of what was for them a meaningless game with a 15-10 lead. The Jets rallied to beat a Curtis Painter-led Colts, 29-15.

In that playoff win last season, Manning passed for 377 yards and three touchdowns on 39 passes. Ryan knew if he could limit Manning’s throws, he would limit his scoring opportunities.

So the Jets leaned on running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene to control the ball, the game’s tempo and, more important, Manning.

Tomlinson rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries, his best game since Oct. 11 when he rushed for 94 yards against Minnesota. Tomlinson also scored the only two Jets touchdowns on 1-yard runs – his first two-touchdown game since Oct. 17 against Denver.

Greene rushed for 70 yards on 19 carries. The Jets rushed the ball more (38 times) than they let struggling quarterback Mark Sanchez pass it (31 attempts). The clock wound down as the Jets were running, leaving Manning less than 27 minutes to operate on offense.

When the Jets took their first lead of the game, 14-13, on Tomlinson’s second touchdown with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter, it gave the Jets a 60-35 edge in plays at that point.

Manning did complete 18 of 25 passes for 225 yards, including a 57-yard bomb to Pierre Garcon in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Jets marched deep into the Indianapolis end in a bid to tie it before halftime, but Sanchez threw an interception to Justin Tryon at the goal line. At halftime Sanchez was struggling (9-of-19 passing for 84 yards), so the Jets stopped passing.

Sanchez threw just five passes in 18 third-quarter plays and just four passes in the fourth quarter until the final, game-winning drive. Greene and Tomlinson rushed 22 times in the second half.

INDIANAPOLIS – Nothing personal, Peyton. Rex Ryan and the New York Jets finally got the made-for-TV ending they wanted – they beat you.

The bombastic Ryan got his victory over Manning when Nick Folk made a 32-yard field goal as time expired Saturday night, giving the Jets a 17-16 playoff victory against Indianapolis.

• Scoring summary and statistics

All week, Ryan turned this into a coach vs. quarterback matchup, referring to his 1-5 record against Manning as Jets coach and Ravens defensive coordinator. Instead, it came down to Folk becoming a hero.

“I’ll tell you what, it feels awesome because this is the playoffs and we’re moving on,” Ryan said.

• Joe Reedy’s Bengals blog
• Follow Joe Reedy on Twitter

With his main tormentor out of the way, Ryan and the Jets (12-5) head to New England for a third meeting with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick next Sunday; they split during the season, but the Patriots won 45-3 at Foxborough.

The Colts (10-7) beat the Jets for the AFC title a year ago. But both defending conference champs were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday. New Orleans, which beat Indy in last February’s Super Bowl, lost at Seattle.

It was a remarkable turn of emotions for the Colts, who thought they won it when Adam Vinatieri made a 50-yard field goal with 53 seconds to go.

But Antonio Cromartie returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards and Mark Sanchez needed five plays to get the Jets into position for the winner.

“You know, he (Manning) is the best,” Ryan said, “and he almost did it to us again.”
Manning certainly had his chances.

He was 18 of 26 for 225 yards and one TD, and got Vinatieri, considered the best clutch kicker in league history, in position with an eight-play, 48-yard drive in the final 2 1/2 minutes.

But he left 53 seconds on the clock for New York.

After Braylon Edwards made a leaping 18-yard catch to take New York to the Colts 14, Folk’s kick went right down the middle.

“It’s certainly disappointing tonight and that’s really all you think about tonight,” Manning said. “It’s disappointing with the way we lost tonight. Any time you lose on a last-second field goal, it certainly stings.”

LaDainian Tomlinson, considered washed-up by some before the season, carried 16 times for 82 yards and scored on two 1-yard runs.

“It’s emotional, exciting and all those things at once,” Tomlinson said. “We knew it was going to be a dogfight against a great team.”

The Colts actually helped the Jets’ winning drive by calling timeout with 29 seconds remaining and the ball at the Indianapolis 32. Sanchez hit Edwards on the next play, a high pass to the right sideline.

Folk trotted on and won it.

“We’ve got to tip our hat to our offense. It was unbelievable,” said Ryan, whose bravado made him a summer sensation in HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. “I mean, we totally dominated the second half offensively. On defense, we had to hold serve. Against Peyton, you’re not going to stop him completely, but our guys played well enough to get it done and keep him out of the end zone. Our offense was just spectacular.”

It needed to be after Vinatieri kicked his longest field goal since Nov. 23, 2008. Again, it looked like Manning would top Ryan again.

Cromartie, Sanchez, Edwards and Folk didn’t let it happen.

“I don’t know when I’m going to beat him, but I want it to be Saturday night,” Ryan said this week. “Is it personal? Yes, it’s personal. It’s personal against him, Reggie Wayne, all those guys, yeah. (Dwight) Freeney and (Robert) Mathis and those other dudes? Absolutely.”

Manning got things started late in the second quarter when Cromartie bit on a play-action fake. Pierre Garcon made an inside move and Cromartie didn’t get help from the safety on a 57-yard TD pass to make it 7-0.

The Jets went to “ground and pound” to start the second half. They ran on eight of their first 10 plays and tied the score 7 on Tomlinson’s 1-yard run.

The Colts proved they could run, too. Manning gave the ball to Joseph Addai on third-and-9 and Addai took it 14 yards to the Jets 37. Four plays later, Vinatieri put a 47-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead.

But the Jets were better on the ground. They ran on 12 of the next 17 plays, going 87 yards in 9:54, and ending the drive with Tomlinson’s second 1-yard TD run for a 14-10 lead.

Manning almost matched it on the next series. He took the Colts 67 yards, but twice missed on passes inside the New York 10. Vinatieri made a 32-yarder to get Indy within 14-13 with 4:37 left.

Then the kickers decided it, and Ryan’s Jets got their third win in four playoff games under Ryan.

“Man, I’ll tell you what,” Tomlinson said, “we’re so happy to move on.”
