Should the New York Jets Play Against the New York…

Should the New York Jets play against the New York Giants more often than once every four years?

That’s the sizzling question New York football fans have been asking since the teams met head-to-head on Christmas Eve last year in a classic tilt that had serious playoff implications for both sides.

Not only did the game fire up New York football fans and fuel the water cooler discussions in the Big Apple in the week leading up to it, the New York Giants were so jazzed about it that they used the contest to propel them all the way to a Super Bowl victory.

Rex Ryan got New York Jets fans pumped up with intense trash-talking in the week leading up to the game, only to get shut up by Brandon Jacobs and the New York Giants’ furious rushing attack.

Players on both sides would have to admit that the game had a playoff intensity that could only happen in the regular season between two teams who share a stadium and the back pages of New York sports newspapers.

Looking around the rest of the pro sports ranks, every other New York-based rivalry features matchups between teams that meet several times each year.

The New York Mets take on the New York Yankees six times annually, and the New York Islanders have gone head-to-head with the New York Rangers 240 times since 1972.

No one in their right mind would argue that the Jets and Giants should meet multiple times in a single season, but I don’t see any reason why they can’t meet once every other season.

Keeping each team’s schedule fair and balanced is a top priority. However, swapping out one interconference game to make room for a contest between the New York Giants and New York Jets wouldn’t be unfair.

Just as New York Jets fans don’t get too fired up about a contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Giants’ faithful can’t be too thrilled about their occasional meetings with the Cleveland Browns.

The rivalry between the New York Jets and New York Giants has some serious juice to it, and I would love for the Big Apple to enjoy a matchup between the teams more often.

Should the New York Jets play against the New York Giants every season? Let me know in the comments.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan admits that his Super…

By Brian Biggane

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS — New York Jets coach Rex Ryan showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine this week some 15 to 20 pounds lighter than he was a few months ago – and that’s not all he had lost.

Gone were the bluster and braggadocio he had flashed each of the past three years at the Combine in predicting that his team was Super Bowl-bound. His subdued tone this week suggested that the crash-and-burn, 8-8 season had taught him some humility.

“Obviously, it (was) a big mistake,” Ryan said of his Super Bowl “guarantee” a year ago. “It contributed to the season we had.”

Ryan joined AFC East counterparts Joe Philbin of Miami and Chan Gailey of Buffalo in assessing their teams. New England coach Bill Belichick skipped the process for the second straight year, instead having director of player personnel Nick Cesario meet with the Patriots’ media.

Ryan had plenty to address. At season’s end, backup quarterback Greg McElroy ripped what he called the “selfishness” of his teammates, and running back LaDainian Tomlinson said the locker room was dysfunctional. Other players unloaded on wide receiver Santonio Holmes of Belle Glade and quarterback Mark Sanchez. Even Ryan admitted he had lost the pulse of the team.

Ryan said he was “not real sure” if Holmes and Sanchez had met to patch up their differences, but said he thought their experience and mutual desire to succeed would help them get back on the same page.

“They’re both competitive guys,” Ryan said. “They’ve had success in this league. Santonio had the catch of all time maybe in the (2009) Super Bowl. Maybe Sanchez hasn’t had the success Santonio has of being a Super Bowl champion, but he has had success. He’s won four road playoff games. … There’s enough in common that they’ll fix this.”

One of the fixes Ryan and General Manager Mike Tannenbaum attempted in regard to their offense was to replace coordinator Brian Schottenheimer with Tony Sparano, fired only last December after nearly four years as Dolphins coach.

The decision to hire Sparano was surprising given Ryan’s past sentiments.

“I’ve said before I never liked him,” Ryan said. “I couldn’t really figure out why. Then when I thought about it I was like, ‘You know what? That guy thinks he’s tough as I am.’ And he might be tougher.

“I schedule at least an hour a day with him, and we’ll talk football. He’s putting in our offense right now. It’s been a great experience so far.”

As much as Ryan and Tannenbaum have insisted Sanchez is the future of the organization, neither would close the door on the possibility of pursuing Peyton Manning.

“We will look at everybody,” Ryan said. “In my opinion we have the best corner in football (Darrelle Revis), in the history of football along with Deion Sanders, and we are still looking at a million (cornerbacks). We’re going to do our due diligence at look at every possibility.”

New England: Nine AFC East titles in 11 years is impressive, but another Super Bowl failure has the Patriots ready to address needs that include wide receiver and pass rush. And as so often has been the case, they’re well-armed to do so, with two picks in the first round (27th and 31st) and two in the second.

While the rumor mill has Randy Moss in a Patriots uniform next season, it’s more likely Belichick will use his first pick on a wideout such as Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd, Baylor’s Kendall Wright or Rutgers’ Mohamed Sanu.

Decisions on defense will be determined after Belichick decides whether to play a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme. The defense was much improved after a late-season switch to a 3-4, but neither Andre Carter nor Mark Anderson, ends who shared the team lead with 10 sacks and are free agents, would return if that happens.

Buffalo: The big concern with free agency starting March 13 is that wide receiver Stevie Johnson wants to be paid like a No. 1 receiver despite not performing like one.

He is the first Bills receiver to record back-to-back 1,000-yard and 70-catch seasons, but his drops have also been the difference in losses to Pittsburgh in 2010 and the Jets last year. If the Bills can’t sign him, they could choose to give him the franchise tag, which would cost them $9.75 million. He isn’t believed to be worth that. His agent and the Bills are meeting this weekend.

After a 4-0 start, the Bills were devastated by injuries and lost 10 of their last 12. Adding depth everywhere possible is the goal.

Gailey on the AFC East: “New England’s the defending champion and they’re there until somebody knocks ‘em off. The rest of us are trying to get there. It’s a tough division, but they’re all tough. I don’t see how I can make any special determination of who sits where before the season starts.”

There is the quick update of the day.

Eagles Notes: Vick, Maclin should be ready against…

The Eagles expect to have Michael Vick, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, tackle Todd Herremans, and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins Sunday against the New York Jets, though they will likely be without defensive end Darryl Tapp.

Tapp, who suffered a broken rib last week against the Dolphins, is listed as doubtful and did not practice all week, a strong indication that he won’t be able to play.

In his absence, the Eagles would likely give another shot to Phillip Hunt – who notched a sack last week – and would also activate either veteran Juqua Parker or Brandon Graham, last year’s No. 1 pick.

Graham, who has played in only two games this season while recovering from knee surgery, hinted this week that coaches might shut him down for the season. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last December and needed microfracture surgery, a procedure that often entails a yearlong recovery.

Coach Andy Reid said Graham is not necessarily done for the year, but wouldn’t commit to playing the second-year end this week.

“We’ll see how things go in the next couple of days. He’s had a good week of practice,” Reid said. “He’s still alive and going here.”

Graham has been inactive three of the past four weeks and dressed but didn’t play in another game.

Vick (ribs), who is listed as probable, has said he will play this week. He struggled last Sunday in his return from injury. He was asked if the ribs will feel better this week.

“I can’t say. Hopefully they will be a lot better, but I do plan on going out there and giving it everything I’ve got,” Vick said.

Maclin (hamstring) is questionable after playing only a half last week in Miami. He had missed the previous three games, but said he feels far better this week.

“It’s a complete difference. I thought I felt pretty good last week, but now I can actually see it and see it on film,” he said. “I’m ready to go.”

Maclin’s health could be crucial as the Eagles face one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL in Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie.

Jenkins (groin) and Herremans (ankle) are both listed as questionable but have said they plan to play.

One late addition to the injury report was backup quarterback Vince Young, listed as questionable with an ankle injury. He practiced in full all week.

Red-zone battle

The Jets rank sixth in the NFL in scoring, in large part because when they get close to the end zone, they punch the ball in. They score on 71 percent of their trips inside opponents’ 20-yard lines, best in the NFL. The Eagles defense, meanwhile, ranks 30th in the red zone.

Wide receiver Plaxico Burress is a big target near the goal line, with seven scores on the season.

“Burress is a big part there, so is their tight end [Dustin Keller],” Reid said. “I’m slighting the running back [Shonn Greene] here on top of that. He’s a big factor.”

Home, sour home

The Eagles’ 1-5 home record, among the worst in the NFL, was a hot topic Friday, especially with the team returning Sunday to the Linc, where they are riding a three-game home losing streak, but players and coaches didn’t have much explanation for the negative stat.

“We appreciate the [fan] support, and we’re busting our tails to make sure we represent the fans and the city in the right way,” Reid said.

Face mask fine

Miami offensive lineman Nate Garner was fined $7,500 for a face mask penalty against the Eagles last week. Garner, who delivered the hit that broke Tapp’s rib, was not fined for that play. The league also fined Trent Cole and Joselio Hanson $15,000 each for hits on Dolphins quarterback J.P. Losman.

Fantasy Football Start ‘Em/Sit ‘Em Week 15: New…

Dec 14, 2011 – Three straight wins, with some help from others around the National Football League, have launched the New York Jets into the final playoff spot with just three games left in the 2011 season. The goal is now crystal clear for Gang Green, win and in, and they really couldn’t have asked for much more when they were .500 having come off a brutal loss to the Denver Broncos. But the final three games for the Jets won’t be as easy as the past three, starting this week when they try to do something they haven’t done in the history of the franchise — beat the Philadelphia Eagles. The once-lauded “Dream Team” Eagles have stumbled to a 5-8 record, but looked quite good last week in dismantling the Miami Dolphins 26-10. They are still alive in the mediocre NFC East race, so they will be playing with desperation.

We’re also getting down to the nitty gritty of the fantasy football season, with playoffs in many leagues in full swing. If you have any Jets on your roster, here’s your primer on how to play them this week.

Start

RB – Shonn Greene – numberFire projection: 14.86 carries, 64.73 yards, 0.41 rushing TDs, 3.65 receptions, 25.66 rec. yards, 11.69 fantasy points

Greene has earned must-start status, finally, after his solid performances the past few weeks. Last week against the lifeless Kansas City Chiefs, Greene had his best overall day of the season, with 129 yards rushing (and a score) and 53 receiving yards. He’s improved leaps and bounds as a receiver out of the backfield, and I would expect the Jets to try more screens this week against an aggressive Eagles defense. It will also likely be a close game, meaning Greene will get a lot of touches.

QB – Mark Sanchez – numberFire projection: 17.35 completions, 202.12 yards, 1.00 TDs, 0.86 INTs, 12.61 fantasy points

Sanchez has been a solid fantasy quarterback this season. He’s thrown for 21 TDs against just 11 interceptions. He doesn’t put up huge yardage numbers, but the Jets are the NFL’s number one red zone team, so Sanchez is getting them in the end zone. He’s also been a threat rushing, as he has five run scores this season.

TE – Dustin Keller – numberFire projection: 3.71 receptions, 39.80 yards, 0.36 TDs, 6.14 fantasy points

The Jets have finally started to include Keller consistently in their game plan, and he’s received a lot of targets from Sanchez in the past few weeks. I would expect the Jets to be able to get Keller in mismatch situations against the Eagles and exploit them.

WR – Santonio Holmes – numberFire projection: 3.21 receptions, 55.13 yards, 0.30 TDs, 7.30 fantasy points

It’s been a statistically disappointing season for Holmes, who hasn’t had any real breakout games. I’m not sure if one will come this week going up against a talented Eagles’ secondary, but he has touchdown catches in three consecutive games. Hopefully that streak continues this week.

Sit

WR – Plaxico Burress – numberFire projection: 3.98 receptions, 47.76 yards, 0.26 TDs, 6.43 fantasy points

Burress had no catches last week against Kansas City, so its hard to say he should be an automatic start against the Eagles, who have a talented secondary. Maybe Burress is wearing down a bit late in the year after not playing football for two years prior to this season.

Jets Defense/Special Teams – numberFire projection: 20.22 points allowed, 2.74 sacks, 2.16 turnovers, 8.99 fantasy points

NumberFire seems to really like the Jets this week, ranking them as the number four projected defense. I have my reservations, as the Jets’ aren’t equipped to matchup with fast teams. I don’t think the Jets defense gets shredded, but I don’t think it’s a banner day, either.

Fantasy Football Preview: New York Jets in Week 14

Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on each player’s individual matchup. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else.

Mark Sanchez(notes), QB

Averaging just 15.70 fantasy points per game, Sanchez is better suited for leagues that start two quarterbacks. He scored just 10.70 fantasy points last week against the Washington Redskins and appears to have a similar matchup this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City is allowing 15.13 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season leading me to believe Sanchez will score his average at best this week.

Shonn Greene(notes), RB

Greene had a monster game last week scoring 29.40 fantasy points against the Redskins. While it is unlikely he will enjoy the same success this week against the Chiefs, it still appears to be a very favorable matchup. Kansas City is giving up 20.23 fantasy points per game to running backs this season so expect a solid game this week.

Plaxico Burress(notes), WR

Burress has not seen the fantasy success expected of him this season. He has had a handful of solid games but most have been average at best. He scored just 3.30 fantasy points last week against the Redskins and this week’s matchup against the Chiefs does not look that much better. Kansas City is allowing only 19.59 fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season leading me to believe it would be wise to explore other options this week if available.

Santonio Holmes(notes), WR

Holmes has been more consistent than Burress this season and is averaging 9.00 fantasy points per game in the last four weeks. He scored 11.80 fantasy points last week against the Redskins but shares the tough matchup this week with his fellow receivers. Given his recent performance, he is worth the risk as a No. 3 receiver this week.

Dustin Keller(notes), TE

Averaging 6.70 fantasy points per game, Keller is your standard tight end from a fantasy perspective. He has had a few big games this season but most have been average at best. He had a rough outing last week against the Redskins scoring only 1.20 fantasy points but hopes to rebound this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City is allowing 9.10 fantasy points per game to tight ends this season so he is definitely worth consideration if you need him.

Nick Folk(notes), K

Like Keller, Folk is an average kicking option. He had a strong game last week against the Redskins but will likely return to his 7.00 fantasy point average this week against the Chiefs. A better option is likely available on your waiver wire.

Defense

The New York Jets’ team defense is one of the best in fantasy football averaging 10.20 fantasy points per game. They had a standard performance last week against the Redskins scoring 9.00 fantasy points but look to increase that performance this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City is allowing 10.00 fantasy points per game to team defense this season making it safe to assume their performance will be at average or better this week.

Fantasy Football Preview: New York Jets in Week 13

Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on each player’s individual matchup. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else.

Mark Sanchez(notes), QB

Averaging 15.80 fantasy points per game, Sanchez is better than some, and a great option in leagues who start two quarterbacks. He scored 22.70 fantasy points last week against the Buffalo Bills but has a tough matchup this week against the Washington Redskins. Washington is allowing only 15.06 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season so I would not expect a huge performance from Sanchez this week.

Shonn Greene(notes), RB

Green had a solid performance last week scoring 9.00 fantasy points against the Bills and has a fairly positive matchup against the Redskins who are giving up 18.14 fantasy points per game to running backs this season. However, LaDainian Tomlinson(notes) should see some action this week to ease the burden on Green who has been playing through a rib injury. I would not expect huge numbers from either of these guys this week.

Plaxico Burress(notes), WR

Averaging 9.00 fantasy points per game, Burress has proven to be a solid fantasy receiver this season. He scored 11.40 fantasy points last week against the Bills and appears to have a favorable matchup this week against the Redskins. Washington is giving up 17.45 fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season leading me to believe he will have a game near his average this week.

Santonio Holmes(notes), WR

Averaging 7.50 fantasy points per game, Holmes has proven to be a stable No. 2 or No. 3 fantasy receiving option this season. He scored 11.00 fantasy points last week against the Bills but I have some concerns with his performance of only two receptions on nine targets last week. If Sanchez and Holmes can work out their issues, Holmes could have another strong game this week.

Dustin Keller(notes), TE

Keller had a fantastic game last week against the Bills scoring 18.10 fantasy points in that contest. He has a good matchup this week against the Redskins who are allowing 7.81 fantasy points per game to tight ends. Expect a good but not overwhelmingly strong performance from Keller this week.

Nick Folk(notes), K

Folk is about as average as they come in terms of fantasy kickers. He scored just 4.00 fantasy points last week against the Bills but has a favorable matchup this week against the Redskins. Washington is giving up 9.73 fantasy points per game to kickers this season allowing me to believe he will have an improved performance this week over last.

Defense

Averaging 10.30 fantasy points per game, the New York Jets’ team defense are one of the top in fantasy football. While they scored just 3.00 fantasy points last week against the Bills, they should rebound against the Redskins who are allowing 10.55 fantasy points per game. Expect a vastly improved performance this week.

Fantasy Football Preview: New York Jets in Week 12

Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on each player’s individual matchup. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else.

Mark Sanchez(notes), QB

The problem with Sanchez from a fantasy perspective is his game is either on or off. There is often no in-between. Sanchez had another “off” game last week against the Denver Broncos scoring only 9.08 fantasy points. He will have a chance to redeem himself this week as he faces off against the struggling Buffalo Bills. Buffalo is giving up 17.84 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks allowing me to believe an improved performance is in store. Coach Rex Ryan has also been allowing backup quarterback Mark Brunell(notes) to get some reps with the first team offense to show Sanchez he needs to improve quickly.

Shonn Greene(notes), RB

Despite the recent rib injury Green is expected to play this Sunday against the Bills. Buffalo is allowing 21.98 fantasy points per game to running backs this season, however Green scored only 7.60 fantasy points when the two teams met in week nine. Expect Green to get the majority of touches with backups LaDainian Tomlinson(notes) and Bilal Powell(notes) still not practicing due to injury.

Plaxico Burress(notes), WR

Averaging 8.70 fantasy points per game, Burress is a solid fantasy receiving option. He scored 7.90 fantasy points when the New York Jets last faced the Bills and looks to have a similar matchup this time around. Buffalo is allowing 22.58 points per game to wide receivers this season giving me confidence he will have another solid performance this week as well.

Santonio Holmes(notes), WR

While Holmes is traditionally a solid fantasy performer he has been struggling with consistency this season. He scored only 3.90 fantasy points last week against the Broncos but had a solid 8.90 fantasy point game in week nine against the Bills. With the same favorable matchup as Burress, expect a similar performance to week nine this week.

Dustin Keller(notes), TE

Keller is a good tight end option for deeper leagues this week but there are far better performers for standard leagues. He scored just 4.00 fantasy points last week against Denver but had a 6.40 fantasy point game against Buffalo in week nine. The Bills are allowing 7.97 fantasy points per game to tight ends this season giving me confidence he will have a typical game for him this week.

Nick Folk(notes), K

What concerns me most about Folk is he has missed four of his last seven field goal attempts. He had a solid 8.00 fantasy point game against the Broncos last week and earned 12.00 fantasy points against the Bills in week nine. Buffalo is allowing 7.20 fantasy points per game to kickers this season proving that despite the concerns, he should be a safe bet this week.

Defense

Averaging 11.00 fantasy points per game, the Jets have one of the top team defenses in fantasy football. They scored 10.00 fantasy points against the Bills in week nine and face a Buffalo team whose offense is a complete mess at the moment. Look for a strong performance this week.

Patriots Keys Against Jets: Run The Ball!

BOSTON (CBS) – The New England Patriots and New York Jets have another divisional showdown on Sunday, with both teams fighting for first place in the AFC East.

The two teams are very familiar with each other, with this being fifth meeting in two years, but familiarity may not help come Sunday.

“They kind of do what they do. There is some game plan-type elements to each game. I’m sure they’ll have some for us this week,” Pats quarterback Tom Brady said this week. “They’re a tough team to prepare for. They’ve got a lot of stuff, they’ve got a lot of really good players, good scheme. They play well at home. It’s a great challenge.”

Read: Pats Determined To Stop Skid

“Both teams are going to be humming for this one,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said on Thursday. “They have to win this game, and we have to win this game. You can sugar-coat it all you want but they know they need it, and we know we need it. So both teams are going to be hungry.”

After dropping two straight, the Patriots will have the tough task of righting the ship against the Jets. Here are a couple of keys for the Patriots to avoid their first three-game losing streak since 2002.

Patriots Running, and Blocking, Game

Tom Brady has thrown 125 passes in the last three games, completing 79 of them. But four of the passes have gone to the other team, and the Patriots haven’t scored more than 20 points in any of the games.

The point being, Tom Brady is having a rough stretch. Hard to believe 829 yards and six touchdowns against three of the better defenses in the NFL is a rough stretch, but things are not going to be any easier for Brady on Sunday.

Establishing a run game would help. The Pats have had to ditch the run after falling behind in recent weeks, but it will be a requirement against the Jets. They are going to be gunning for Brady all afternoon, and a few handoffs will assure he isn’t hitting the deck every other play.

Patriots Blog: Ridley Taking Role In Stride

BenJarvis Green-Ellis has just 17 carries during the current two-game skid. He is the bruising type of back that can fight a hard-hitting Jets defense for a few yards every carry. New England can also change the pace with rookie Stevan Ridley, and Brady can always swing a pass to Kevin Faulk or Danny Woodhead out of the backfield.

Getting Green-Ellis going will be key.  New England is 18-1 when he finds the end zone, which he’s done 18 times since 2010. The only backs to run for more scores than Green-Ellis in that span are named Arian Foster (21), Adrian Peterson (21) and Michael Turner (19). Not a bad group of running backs to be mentioned in. Green-Ellis carried the ball 27 times the first time out against the Jets, leading the way on a 13-play, six minute drive in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Gronk On T&R: “Be Ready For Anything” Against Jets

But if anyone, not named Pittsburgh, can fluster a rush attack it’s the New York Jets.  Despite being ranked 21st in the NFL against the run, New York was able to keep Buffalo’s Fred Jackson at bay last Sunday, keeping him to 82 yards and out of the end zone. Attacking the New York D early with Green-Ellis, and then sending in some fresh legs in Ridley or Woodhead, will allow the Patriots to control the ball, and maybe set up some play action.

The Patriots will no doubt throw the ball more than they run on Sunday, but keeping somewhat of a balance will be key to getting the offense on track. A healthy rush attack can lead to a lethal air assault.

“The defense is very fast, they’re going to throw a lot of looks at you. For us to go out there and win we have to go execute our game plan. That’s on the ground and through the air,” Ridley said on Thursday. “We have to do both, it has to be balanced. That’s what we’ve been focused on all year. I don’t think we have to do one more than another, we just have to be a balanced offense to let our playmakers go out and make the plays.”

Of course when the backs aren’t running the ball, they’ll have to make sure they pick up their blitz assignments and protect Brady. That is something they’ve prepared for all week.

“There’s not going to be any surprises for me out there for me,” said Ridley, noting Belichick was throwing everything at them in practice. “We’ll have every look, and probably a few more than we need, we’ll have every blitz assignment covered.”

Brady will find out on Sunday.

Cutting The Turnovers

Maybe Patriots fans were spoiled last year, watching a team that turned the ball over just 10 times.

It seems as though they are making up for their stinginess last season, with Brady already up to 10 interceptions (after just four in 2010) along with the team coughing up four fumbles. After finishing last season with a +28 in turnover differential, the Patriots are even in 2011.

Brady has been forcing the ball much more than he did last year, but said the antidote to the turnovers is simple.

“Just decision making. I’ve just got to make better decisions,” he said when asked about his interceptions.

Not all of them have been Brady’s fault, with some tipped balls that would have hit the ground last year instead falling into the arms of defenders. Coach Belichick said something obviously went wrong on each play, and that is not always on Brady.

“I’d say for the most part, I think he’s throwing to the right guy,” said Belichick. “There’s something about the pass, the route, the catch, the whatever it is – the ball isn’t ending up in our hands. I’d say for the most part, he’s making good reads and he’s going to the right guy.”

Gresh & Zo Whiteboard: Holes In The Secondary

Even the Jets know the Patriots recent trouble holding on to the ball is likely just a bump in the road. But they’re hoping the struggles continue through this weekend.

“They know how to protect the football,” Ryan said this week. “They study it like crazy, but so do we. If we think there’s vulnerability in a player, we’ll go at it. You look at Wes Welker’s caught 100 balls already. He’s the hardest guy to get a fumble from. The running back does a nice job protecting the football. I think he might lead the league in most attempts without a fumble. They do a tremendous job protecting the ball. Sometimes interceptions happen. It could be a tipped ball. It could be anything. Hopefully we’re fortunate enough to get a couple.”

With guys like Darelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson roaming around, Brady will have to make sure he gets the ball in the right spots. The Jets have had success in making Brady miserable for a day, and that trio already has eight picks this season.

Whichever team Brady throws the ball to on Sunday will likely come out on top Sunday.

—————————————————————————————

The New England defense has shown signs of improving, but Sunday against the Jets will come down to how the offense performs. For two straight weeks they have looked lackluster, and have actually been outplayed by the defense (minus the final eight minutes against the Giants).

Establishing a run game and cutting back on the turnovers are key to beating the Jets. New York had lost three straight before becoming a more run-oriented offense. Obviously, the Patriots will never abandon the pass, but it would be nice to see the running backs get a chance to complement it.

New York Jets’ Joe McKnight Named AFC Special…

Read More: Joe McKnight (RB – NYJ), New York Jets, Buffalo Bills

New York Jets’ running back and kickoff returner Joe McKnight was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October, the NFL announced Thursday.

McKnight returned 11 kickoffs for 443 yards during the month, including a 107-yard kick return in a Week 4 loss against Baltimore, the longest play in Jets history. His 40.3-yard kickoff return average for the month topped the NFL, as does his 40-yard average for the season.

Against Miami in Week 6, McKnight totaled 198 kickoff return yards, including an 88-yard kickoff return.  He becomes just the fourth Jet to win Special Teams Player of the Month honors, joining returner Justin Miller (Oct., 2006), kick returner Brad Smith (Dec.,  2010) and punter Tom Tupa (Nov., 1999).

Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters he expects McKnight to play a bigger role Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

“Absolutely he’ll get more opportunities this week,” Ryan said.

“I think he’s earned it and he’s done a great job even as a receiver,” Ryan added. “(Buffalo) is using (C.J.) Spiller a lot as a receiver too. You get an explosive athlete and you look for ways to use him and I can see us using him a little more this week.”

After 6 days off, Jets return to work focused on…

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Rex Ryan and the New York Jets were eager to get back to their training facility.

And not only because it had working lights and running water.

The Jets (4-3) returned Monday from a six-day, bye-week break, capped for several players and coaches — including Ryan — by power outages as a result of the rare October snowstorm that blasted the Northeast on Saturday.

“I haven’t had power since 3 o’clock on Saturday,” safety Jim Leonhard said. “After that, the world kind of ended for me, just trying to get everything taken care of at home with the family.”

A few Jets players said they didn’t watch any NFL games Sunday because of the outages, while others acknowledged they wouldn’t have watched anyway as they tried to take a mental break from the game. After all, they said, they know exactly what’s in store for them.

New York is a game behind both Buffalo and New England in the AFC East, with road games against each in the next two weeks.

“We know we put our backs against the wall, and we have to come out swinging,” Leonhard said. “We can’t come out flat. We have to play well for the next couple games and see what happens after that.”

The Jets are 0-2 in games immediately following the break under Ryan, and they take on a Bills team that has been surprisingly solid so far and is 4-0 at home.

“We have to do something about that trend,” Ryan said. “We need to win this week.”

Cornerback Darrelle Revis ramped things up even more, calling the game “a must win.”

It might seem to be a bit of an exaggeration to some, but this really is a crucial stretch for a team that looked lousy during a three-game road losing streak before showing marked signs of improvement before the bye with two wins in a row. If the Jets can beat the Bills and then the Patriots, they would suddenly be in the discussions about the elite teams in the AFC.

Two losses, and New York will again be in crisis mode with a third straight playoff trip an unlikely — but not impossible — scenario.

“Would we like to have had a better record? Absolutely, we would’ve, but we don’t,” Ryan said. “We’re 4-3, but we have it right in front of us. The teams you have to beat are right in front of us, so we’ll know. These next few weeks are going to be critical for us.”

Ryan has given the players six days off in the past during the break, but said his team is “ahead of the game” in its preparation for the Bills, tweaking its approach a bit from previous bye weeks. Ryan and his assistants spent more time before they also took a few days off to really get into the game plan against Buffalo, something they hadn’t done as thoroughly in the past two seasons.

The results were clear in the first practice of the week as Ryan said players “were flying around.” It was a good first sign that the momentum the Jets had built in their last two games hadn’t been slowed by the layoff.

“We just have to make sure that we come back and focus in and get back into a rhythm as quick as we can,” left guard Matt Slauson said. “I think that’s kind of where we were lacking over the last two years. Everybody gets away and kind of rests a little bit and you fall out of that rhythm. As far as today went, we were right in it, right in a groove, everything was going great. I’m really pleased.”

In Ryan’s first season, the Jets had their bye in Week 9 and returned with a 24-22 clunker at home against Jacksonville. The break came after Week 7 last year, and New York appeared rusty and sluggish in a 9-0 home loss to Green Bay.

“You can’t focus on the past coming off byes and losing,” Revis said. “It’s a new year and we’re in control of our destiny and where we want to go.”

Things weren’t always looking up, though, as recently as a month ago when the losses were piling and players griping about each other.

“Through a three-game losing streak, at the time, there’s a whole bunch of things going through your head,” Revis said. “No. 1, you’re trying to get a win, and No. 2, you’re trying to make sure you do what you need to do at your job. There’s just a whole bunch of stuff going on, a lot of pressure around the building.”

A few wins have allowed the bad vibes to dissipate a bit, and the Jets are still thinking big. If New York wins Sunday, and the Giants beat New England, there would suddenly be a three-way tie atop the AFC East.

“Out of all the stuff that’s been going on, it’s kind of surprising,” Revis said. “It really is. We’re making strides and we’re on a two-game winning streak. We didn’t win on the bye, though, but this is a good game for us to get our third win and especially because it’s on the road, as well.”

Road warriors in the past, particularly in the post-season, the Jets have a chance to get back on track away from home in one of the AFC’s toughest places to play.

“We do have our work cut out for us, but I feel confident,” linebacker Calvin Pace said. “I mean, we’ve gone into some places (in the past) that nobody gave us a chance to win and we’ve come out with a win. … We do have some challenges ahead of us, but I think we do a good job of staying in the moment. This week is about Buffalo, and everything else, it doesn’t matter if we don’t take care of business this week.”

Notes: Ryan thinks DE Mike DeVito (knee) and CB Isaiah Trufant (hamstring) will be able to play at Buffalo, but is less optimistic about rookie DT Kenrick Ellis, who injured his left ankle against San Diego. … Slauson disagrees with fans and media who think this year’s offensive line isn’t as good as last season’s. He said the line has shown improvement recently and added that it’s the same five guys, except for RT Wayne Hunter, and “in our opinion, that’s an upgrade” over the retired Damien Woody.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Report: Matt Dodge Gets Workout With New York Jets

Former New York Giants punter Matt Dodge reportedly worked out for the New York Jets this week

Oct 27, 2011 – Former New York Giants punter Matt Dodge, cut by the team during training camp after a tumultuous 2010 rookie season, reportedly worked out for the New York Jets this week. Dodge, of course, was beaten out for the Giants’ punting job this season by Steve Weatherford, who punted for the Jets the past two seasons.

Dodge, of course, was wildly inconsistent as a rookie for the Giants a season ago. He will always be remember by Giants’ fans for kicking the ball to Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson last season on the final play of a game, allowing Jackson to return the ball for a game-winning touchdown — the only time that has happened on a punt in NFL history.

Gang Green Nation speculates that Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff has not been happy with his team’s rookie punter, T.J. Conley, who is averaging 43.5 yards per punt (37.9 net) thus far.

Meanwhile, Weatherford – who was ripped by Westhoff after the Jets let him go as a free agent — has been spectacular for the Giants. He is averaging a career-best 46.4 yards per punt, with a net average of 38.2.

Ah, what a delicious irony it would be if Dodge and Weatherford ended up trading places.

A Week Without Rex Ryan? What Are We Going To Do?

The New York Jets have a bye, and that means Rex Ryan won’t be in front of the New York media for a few days.

Oct 25, 2011 – Oh, no! The New York Jets have a bye this week, returning to action Nov. 6 on the road against the Buffalo Bills. What is the New York media going to do for the rest of the week without over-the-top quotes from Jets coach Rex Ryan to write about? This is a problem. I mean, New York Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin is not exactly a quote machine. And New York Rangers’ coach John Tortorella isn’t going to say things like “we sucked from head to toe” every time his team loses. And WFAN’s Mike Francesa won’t have any Jets to interview this week.

Rex did leave us with some fodder for discussion on Monday, for which we thank him.

Ryan Monday took a poke at the San Diego Chargers after Sunday’s loss. Commenting on San Diego’s Randy McMichael saying ”The San Diego Chargers beat the San Diego Chargers,” he said. “Nothing to do with the New York Jets,” Ryan fired off a classic line from the movie ‘Anchorman.’

“Stay classy, San Diego.”

Ryan also left us with the fact that he has imposed a gag order on himself when it comes to the use of the word ‘rings.’

“I will no longer say the word ‘rings’ anymore. Because the ‘Kiss Belichick’s rings’, the rings here with San Diego. All that kind of stuff so I’m not going to use that word anymore. No more of those things. I get crushed every time I say it,” Ryan said.

Ah, but where is the fun in that, Rex?

Ryan did, though, also show a little glimpse that two straight victories — following a three-game losing streak — have brought a little swagger back to the Jets.

“We’re going to be tough to beat. There is no doubt,” Ryan said. “We’ll make our run. We’re 4-3. We’re behind where I thought we’d be, but we still have a lot of football in front of us and we’re playing teams that we have to beat.”

So, everybody, time to catch your breath for a few days. Rex will be back. And we are 100 percent certain whatever he has to say won’t disappoint us.
