Eron Riley, who earned a spot on the Ravens’ practice squad 2009 as an undrafted wide receiver from Duke, was signed today by the Jets off the Broncos’ practice squad.

The Jets were a little thin at wide receiver after trading former Raven Derrick Mason to the Houston Texans last week.

Riley is big (6-foot-3, 207 pounds), but not particularly fast. At Duke, he played 45 career games (40 starts), catching 144 passes for 2,413 yards (16.8 avg.) and 22 touchdowns.

Ex-Ravens defensive coordinator Ryan never saw Riley in Baltimore because he was already head coach of the Jets.

10 yards.

That’s how much offense the hapless Jets were able to muster up in the first quarter against the Dolphins on Monday night (Oct. 17, 2011), who despite controlling the football, still find themselves down 7-3.

That’s because Darrelle Revis intercepted Matt Moore on third down to run it back 100 yards to put New York up by four after Miami got on the board with a field goal.

While the Jets retain the lead, they have yet to secure a first down and have done nothing to assure the “Gang Green” nation that all the talk from wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who made headlines last week for sacking the team’s offensive line, was just that — talk.

Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer promised to “roll up his sleeves and get back to work,” but with no first downs and a total of 10 yards, it doesn’t sound like anyone at the MetLife stadium is prepared to cross the picket line.

Stay tuned.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)

The New York Jets have signed cornerback Isaiah Trufant from the practice squad and waived wide receiver Mardy Gilyard.

Trufant, who adds depth to New York’s secondary, was with the Jets late last season but was waived before the AFC championship game. He was recently re-signed after being cut by Philadelphia in August, waived again and then signed to New York’s practice squad. He’s the younger brother of Seattle’s Marcus Trufant.

The moves Saturday came less than a week after the Jets claimed Gilyard off waivers from St. Louis. The fourth-round pick of the Rams last year had six catches for 63 yards as a rookie.

The Jets open their season Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

That’s all the news for today.

Just days after the St. Louis Rams went with Danario Alexander and the promise of Mark Clayton over 2010 NFL Draft fourth-rounder Mardy Gilyard, the New York Jets swooped in, picking up the promising but heretofore-underwhelming wide receiver in free agency.

Gang Green Nation suggests Gilyard could play a role much like the one he seemed set to perform in St. Louis, struggling to get reps at wide receiver but playing a significant role on special teams in the meantime. It’s hard to deny Gilyard’s potential, but his inability to learn Pat Shurmur’s playbook in 2010 and his special teams lapses in 2011 made him hard for the Rams to keep on the roster for the regular season.

The Jets find themselves in the strange position of going after the Rams’ wide receiver leftovers, but Gilyard is a special case; he could be cut midway through the year or he could become Mark Sanchez’s favorite target, for all we know about him after an entire year of pro football.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Randy Moss, the top veteran headcase wide receiver in a season of NFL rumors devoted to veteran headcase wide receivers, remains connected to the New York Jets in an offseason abbreviated by the NFL Lockout, with Mark Sanchez recently playing coy about the recent whisperings. The St. Louis Rams, another team with a young quarterback and a limited set of wide receivers, have had the same rumors, but no reporter has yet approached Sam Bradford to make a non-denial denial about it.

Moss is a deeply divisive wide receiver—both one of the best to ever play football and one of the most likely to wear out his welcome within two or three years, or months, or games of joining a team—but it would be hard to suggest a scenario in which he doesn’t help a receiving corps on the level of the Rams or the Jets.

Unfortunately, all of this remains academic until the NFL Lockout ends and teams are permitted, once more, to talk to players. In the meantime, the press will keep talking to players about other players.

The latest rumors surrounding soon to be released from prison, wide receiver Plaxico Burress, is that the New York Jets aren’t likely to pursue him, with the Philadelphia Eagles becoming the most recent front-runners.

Burress could be another short term option to replace Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes if either leaves in free agency. Although, similar to Randy Moss, Burress makes more sense as a replacement for Edwards considering his size and the type of game he plays. Edwards has recently expressed his desire to stay with the team, yet again, this time citing his growing closeness to quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Edwards has endeared himself to fans in the past year with his improved consistency on the field and outspoken desire to remain with the Jets. It remains to be seen if he can work out a contract, despite him mentioning the possibility of taking a hometown discount.

The quarterback, with a cartilage tear in his throwing arm, made a soft toss here and there, but nothing with any power behind it. A few times, he held his arm awkwardly.

A source confirmed that an MRI exam revealed the tear. Both Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens, the backups, made a full complement of throws.

Sanchez said Wednesday that he would play Sunday when the Jets attempt to clinch a playoff spot against the Chicago Bears.

Santonio Holmes was also at practice. Coach Rex Ryan announced Wednesday that the wide receiver had turf toe, but he expected Holmes to play Sunday as well.
